Over 130 dead as typhoon rips through Philippines

Manila, November 9
A day after one of the most powerful typhoons on record ripped through the region, wiping away buildings and levelling seaside homes with massive storm surges, super typhoon Haiyan, codenamed Yolanda in the Philippines, left at least 138 people dead, while over four million people affected in the southeast Asian nation, a senior official said on Saturday evening.

According to the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 118 of the 138 victims were from the central Philippine province of Leyte.

Regional military commander Lt General Roy Deveraturda said that the casualty figure "probably will increase," after viewing aerial photographs of the widespread devastation caused by the typhoon, which was heading toward Vietnam after moving away from the Philippines.

Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras, a senior aide to President Benigno Aquino III said the number of casualties could not be immediately determined. The government troops were helping recover bodies, he said.

Civil aviation authorities in Tacloban, a city of 200,000 located about 580 km of Manila, reported that the seaside airport terminal was "ruined" by storm surges, Andrews said. US Marine Colonel Mike Wylie, who surveyed the damage in Tacloban prior to possible American assistance, said that the damage to the runway was significant. Military planes were still able to land with relief aid.

“There are cars thrown like tumble weed and the streets are strewn with debris," said Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, the head of a United Nations disaster assessment coordination team. — Agencies

Maldives poll: Nasheed fails to get majority in first round

Male, November 9
In a repeat of the balloting in September, former President Mohammed Nasheed today failed to clinch an outright majority in the first round of the presidential re-vote in the Maldives, setting up a run-off with runner-up Abdulla Yameen.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chief Nasheed bagged 46.3 per cent of the votes, a marginal increase from his previous tally of 45.45 per cent votes in the September 7 polls that were annulled by the Supreme Court.

All but two of the 475 ballot boxes had been counted till late tonight, Haveeru reported. Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) leader Abdullah Yameen made a significant gain of nearly five per cent over the 25.35 per cent of votes he secured in the annulled polls and managed 30.3 per cent of the votes today. Jumhooree Party leader and resort tycoon Gasim Ibrahim bagged 23.4 per cent of the votes as second runner up.

Nearly 2.03 lakh people or 85 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise, as against the turnout of 88 per cent cast during the voting in September. — PTI

Can’t reopen graft cases against Zardari: Pak govt

Islamabad, November 9
The Pakistan government has informed the Supreme Court that it cannot reopen multi-million dollar graft cases against former President Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland because the issue is "hopelessly time-barred".

Attorney General Munir Malik told the court that reviving the graft cases against Zardari over the alleged laundering of $60 million was not possible because the government's appeal was "hopelessly time-barred" and the decision to close the cases by the former attorney general in Geneva in 2008 had become final, Dawn daily reported. But a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, which had taken up all cases closed under a controversial graft amnesty issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, expressed disappointment over what it said was a violation of its order.

The government was waiting for a court order instead of taking steps in the matter, the court observed during the hearing yesterday. — PTI
