To boost Saket’s poll prospects, Spices Park shifted to Sahaspur
Dehradun, November 1 With an eye on the 2014 parliamentary elections, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna wants to boost the election prospects of his son Saket Bahuguna, who had lost the Tehri byelection to Raj Laxmi Shah of the BJP, and is, therefore, pulling all stops for him. Initially, Majri Grant in Doiwala and Sitarganj were selected for setting up Spices Parks but when Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma arrived in Dehradun in October with the intention of inaugurating a Spices Park, the plan had undergone a change. “The setting up of a Spices Park at Majri Grant was not politically beneficial for the Congress. The Doiwala Assembly seat is held by former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank at present. It seems the government now is no longer interested in setting up Spices Park at Majri Grant in Doiwala for which a detailed project report has already been prepared. Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma was to lay the foundation stone of the park at Majri Grant. Hence, it was decided overnight to first inaugurate a park at Sitarganj and then later at Sahaspur,” said a senior official. The Sahaspur Assembly seat, which is with Sahdev Singh Pundir of the BJP, falls under the Tehri parliamentary seat from where Saket is expected to try his luck again next year. “The Centre-funded Spices Park will definitely enhance the profile of the Sahaspur constituency where the Dehradun campus of Sridev Suman University, a flower seeds and plant production centre and the Dehradun campus of Uttarakhand Horticulture and Forestry University, Bharsar, Pauri Garhwal, have already been approved,” said a BJP leader. Spices Parks have been proposed under the 11 five-year plan in some of the states which are leading in spice production. Interestingly, for states to aspire for a Spices Park, among other things, the production of a particular spice should be more than 50,000 metric tonne. In Uttarakhand, the total production of spices is 75,000 metric tonne and the production of ginger is 45,000 metric tonne. Tehri (Agrakhal) and Dehradun districts lead in ginger production. Clearly, Anand Sharma’s largesse and friendly terms with the Chief Minister helped in clinching the deal and the latter is keen to ensure that his son too benefits politically from it. |
Provisions being 'violated' in appointment of PSC members
Dehradun, November 1 According to the provisions, members can only be appointed to the PSC after submitting their resignations from their parent government institution, university or organisation. Also, once these members complete their tenure with the PSC, they are not eligible for any government position. “But in rampant violation of these provisions, not only members are procuring fake NOCs from their previous institutions for their stint at the PSC, but also after completing their stint, they are rejoining their duties in the parent organisation. Recently, a head of the Hindi department at HNB Garhwal Central University, who is a member of the commission, was given deputation of two years by the university authorities, which is in gross violation of the constitutional provisions. The sanction was given on October 17 by the university,” alleged Ravinder Jugran, a senior BJP leader. Jugran has now appealed to the President to intervene in the matter. “The members of the PSC, officers of the PSC and universities are violating the provisions of 319 (D) of the Constitution. These individuals by not resigning from their government jobs leave a door open for themselves for rejoining their previous jobs once their tenure comes to an end as members of the commission,” alleged Jugran. |
Govt gets Rs 7,500 cr for
rebuilding, rehab works
Dehradun, November 1 The Union Ministry of Finance has sanctioned the funds in the quickest possible manner. Of the allocated amount, 25 per cent will go towards creating livelihood opportunities for the affected people and Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 3,500 crore towards reconstruction. “The monitoring and implementing committee headed by Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar will oversee the work while the sanctioning committee headed by me will monitor the entire process of rebuilding and rehabilitation. Around six units will be formed for the implementation of the projects,” said Rakesh Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary. Further, dismantling of houses and the reconstruction activity at Kedarnath will take place on the basis of a report by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the wishes of the people. “We have received a preliminary report from the GSI. Nothing will be forced upon the people. Around 400-odd people have requested for pre-fabricated houses and we will start issuing them the houses by November 26. Around 1,800 to 1,900 persons have asked for self-construction of houses and they will be given Rs 5 lakh each as assistance,” said Sharma. |
Shoppers throng markets across Doon on Dhanteras

New range of firecrackers attracted children. Sweet shops in the city also remained open till late night. Meanwhile, traffic snarls were witnessed across Dehradun and the traffic police had a tough time managing the chaos. Car, two-wheeler sales surge
The sale of cars and two-wheelers has zoomed during the ongoing festival season and the automobile dealers are making all-out efforts to make the most of Dhanteras and Diwali, which are considered auspicious days for buying vehicles. To attract customers, the automobile companies are giving discount up to Rs 45,000 on cars and from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 on two-wheelers during Dhanteras and Diwali. “We usually sell 10 cars every day but on Dhanteras today we had advance orders for 200 cars. The booking for cars has increased manifold in the last fortnight and special discounts are acting as a catalyst,” Manoj, a sales executive, Maruti automobiles, told The Tribune. Companies like Hyundai, Toyota, Mahindra and Volkswagen are offering discounts to customers to increase their sales. The exchange offers are also helping the car dealers reap profits. “This is the most important week for any automobile company operating in India and we will be selling over 500 cars in just one week this season. The market is also responding well and people are buying new cars,” said Vipin, sales executive, Hyundai. A sales executive at a dealer in Bajaj motorcycles said, “The sale of bikes has increased tremendously on Dhanteras. We are not able to meet the demand despite having a sufficient number of bikes in the stock.” The customers seemed equally upbeat and enthusiastic about their new pricey possessions. It is to be noted that many people, who had bought vehicles some days ago, took their delivery today. “This Dhanteras we thought of buying a car and the festive offerings have made decision making easier. I have bought a white Maruti Swift car for my family,” said Vinod Sundriyal, a customer. According to the data available with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), 4,407 two-wheelers and 1,121 cars were registered with the RTO last month. The number of registration cases in November would be manifold higher than the October numbers, as the applications for registration of vehicles bought on Dhanteras and Diwali would be filed with the RTO after holidays. |
