Jalandhar, October 28
In the wake of yesterday’s serial blasts at Patna, Bihar, and in view of the ongoing festival season, the police commissionerate has deployed all its 3,500 constables across important intersections and crowded places of the city. The city police has stopped allowing its personnel to avail any leave, unless there is a pressing exigency in the family, just to ensure that residents enjoy a safe Diwali.

“Instructions have been issued for maximum deployment of the staff in field, especially at railway station, bus stand, markets and shopping malls,” said ADCP (headquarters), Lakhwinder Singh Khaira.

“We have got two companies from the Punjab Armed Police. There are PCR personnel moving 24x7 on motorcycles. Our dog squad and anti-sabotage squad have been directed to conduct checks at different points on a daily basis,” he said.

Further, three ADCP-level officials are told to personally make rounds in the city in the daytime to check deployment of staff and ensure that these teams are working in a coordinated and concerted manner, he said.

“ACPs have also been told to take turns for night duty. The ACP Control Room, ACP (crime) and ACP (headquarters) have been conducting nakas even during the night time, Khaira added.

The police has laid down as many as 50 nakas in the city.

"The checking points are changed daily to dodge miscreants. But usually these are set up at busy points like entry or exit points to the bus stand, railway station, religious places, shopping areas or other busy sites," the ADCP (headquarters) said.

The city police has also deployed eight teams of its Anti-Riot Police Force at important intersections of the city to avoid any protest-like situation in the city. Armed with protecting canes, shields, tear gas shells and water cannons in their vehicles, each team comprises 23 constables, led by DSPs and an SP.

Submit report on use of weedicides in school, Deputy Commissioner tells DEO
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, October 28
After The Tribune highlighted the callous exposure to harmful weedicides that students at a district school were being exposed to by the school administration, the Jalandhar DC has sought a report from the DEO (secondary) regarding the use of weedicides at the school.

The students at Government Senior Secondary School, Lasara, were being employed to spray weedicides to eliminate weeds growing in the school premises, without any protective clothing or masks, by its staff.

Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam has asked DEO (senior secondary) Neelam Kumari to submit a report on the issue.

Talking to The Tribune, the DC said: “The DEO has been asked to submit a report on the issue and nail the culprits. Action will be taken against those found guilty of making students indulge in the practice.”

Speaking on the wide prevalence of the use of substandard midday meals, especially in rural areas, the DC said while he wasn’t aware of such instances so far, the Education Department would be asked to look into that issue as well.

The DEO said a probe would be initiated in the case.

While the Education Department has clearly been caught over a major injustice being meted out to students right under its nose, the use of weedicides has been going on for the past sometime in the school under the garb of the noble eco-club project.

While the same had been acknowledged by the school authorities, it had also been claimed that it was being done with the assistance of the staff.

However, students have claimed it has been a common practice to employ them to spray weedicides without any sort of assistance or protection.

Wassim, who was accompanied by his barrister sons Ali Sajjad and Omar Sajjad, said: “I am pleasantly surprised over my rousing welcome by the DBA.”

The DBA organised a special function in his honour today.

His maternal grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Sharif was also a leading lawyer of Jalandhar and was a member of the DBA till he became the Judge of the Lahore High Court in 1945.

Earlier in his address, former chairman of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council advocate Navtej Singh Toor narrated how a report carried in The Tribune helped him in locating his ancestral house at Suraj Ganj locality here.

Wassim called up Toor - both have common acquaintances in Pakistan - seeking his help to locate the house.

Wassim got his number from Pakistan law secretary Meer Chisti, who became Toor’s friend during his two visits to that country in 2004 and 2012 and during his address to the House of Commons in London where he was invited as Bar Council Chairman by the Indo-Pak Friendship Society in 2007.

Toor also presented him various photographs of his house and a souvenir published by the DBA on its 100th anniversary in which his grandfather’s name has also been mentioned as a leading lawyer of Jalandhar.

Earlier in his address, DBA president advocate Mandeep Singh Sachdev urged Wassim to utilise his influence for issuing liberal visas to Indians by Pakistan.

He said: “My father, advocate Gurdeep Singh Sachdeva, was born in Lyallpur. He tried to visit Pakistan about a decade ago but was not issued visa despite several attempts.”

Welcoming him, former DBA president Raj Kumar Bhalla raised the issue of tension created by Pakistan in India every now and then.

DBA secretary Satnam Singh Hundal and its former chief Darbara Singh Dhillon also expressed their views on the occasion.

District and Sessions Judge JS Kular, Additional District and Sessions Judges Gurnam Singh, Rakesh Gupta, HS Lekhi, Harreet Kaur, Harpreet Kaur and Harveen Bhardwaj, former BDA president Narinder Singh and advocates KK Arora, Sandeep Kalia, Sanjeev Sharma, Sanjeev Kamboj, Sourabh Arora, Raj Kumar Kashyap and Bhupinder Singh were among those others present.

Former acting president of Pakistan Wassim Sajjad got a memorable present from the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) during his visit to his ancestral house at Suraj Ganj locality here today. Mayor Sunil Jyoti asked MCJ assistant health officer-cum-local registrar (birth and death wing) Varinder Kalia to check records to prepare the birth certificate of the visiting dignitary.

Jyoti asked Dr Kalia to do so on a formal application filed by former chairman of Punjab and Haryana Bar Council advocate Navtej Singh Toor, who deposited the required fees of Rs 30 for getting the copies of the birth certificate in Urdu and English.

Talking to The Tribune, Dr Kalia said: “According to the MC records, Sujjad Ahmed, son of Sajjad Ahmed Jan (profession lawyer), was born at Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, on March 30, 1941. He is the second child of his parents. His grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Sharif’s residence was Nakodar Adda as per our records and his caste has been stated in records as Sheikh Musalmana.”

While the Mayor was away to Chandigarh to attend an urgent meeting, senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia accompanied by deputy mayor Arvinder Oberoi and Dr Kalia handed over the birth certificate to Wassim at the DBA office.

A forwarding letter by Mayor Sunil Jyoti was also annexed with the birth certificate which stated “I am feeling honoured to present birth certificates to a dignitary like you on behalf of the MCJ.”

Wassim and his barrister sons, Ali Sajjad and Omar Sajjad, were joyous over getting the documents from the MCJ.

Toor sought Mayor Sunil Jyoti’s help last morning in finding the exact location of the visiting guest’s birth place by checking the birth records. The Mayor deputed local registrar of birth and death branch of the MCJ Dr Virendra Kalia to locate his house.

While Wassim’s ancestral house was located with the help of The Tribune report published on Sunday, the MCJ thought to provide copies of the birth certificate to Wassim as an unforgettable gift.

The news report was also read by 86-year-old Maj-Gen (medical corps) Tirath Singh (retd), who was residing quite opposite to Wassim’s ancestral house in the Suraj Ganj locality here. Currently residing at the Defence Colony, he and his wife, Dr Amarjeet Kaur, contacted advocate Toor after getting his mobile number from the Internet with the help of their daughter, Dr Ishu Singh, and informed him about the location of Wassim’s house.

Wassim (72) did not remember the exact location of his ancestral house. So he took the help of Toor.

Jalandhar, October 28
City mayor Sunil Jyoti and senior BJP leader and former local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia are at loggerheads over removing of weekly vegetable market from the Gurunanakpura road. While Jyoti is stick on his decision to not to allow vendors holding the market, as they have been littering garbage, digging holes on the road and causing traffic congestion, Kalia, the area MLA, however, is in favour of vendors and claims that the local civic body must frame a policy before stopping them from earning their livelihood.

Kalia is of the view that the vendors have a constitutional right to earn livelihood. Moreover, the government is also in a process to come up with street hawker bill shortly to safeguard the roadside vendors.

The Municipal Corporation (MC) had adopted a "pick and choose policy" just to harass the vendors, Kalia claimed.

Jyoti said the MC had decided not to allow any vegetable market in the city at any cost.

He said the vendors had been misleading the public on the name of ‘kisan mandi’ as they were selling commodities on much higher prices after purchasing them in bulk from the vegetable market.

When asked if the authorities have earmarked any alternate site for the vegetable market, the Mayor said: "It is not our headache to provide them sites for selling their produce."

Meanwhile, amid heavy police force, the district administration and the officials of the MC, restrained the vendors from setting up their stalls on the Gurunanakpura road, this morning.

Apprehending resistance from the vendors, the district administration had made elaborated security arrangements.

Residents of the area for whom the ‘mandi’ was of much relief have demanded allocation of a suitable site for the vendors.
