Snooping row: Germany wants apology from US

Berlin, October 28
German politicians have demanded an apology from US President Barack Obama over reports that the National Security Agency (NSA) was tapping Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone for over a decade.

“We will not allow ourselves to be treated by the Americans in this manner. Spying on friends and partners is completely unacceptable," German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said yesterday. Germany expected an apology from the US and an assurance that its surveillance operations will be stopped immediately, he said in a TV interview.

Weekly German news magazine Der Spiegel said top secret NSA documents disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden showed that the agency conducted a spying programme on Merkel's mobile phone and possibly the entire government complex in Berlin from the nearby American embassy from as far back as 2002.

Decades of close friendship and partnership built up on the basis of mutual trust have suffered "severe damage" and it will take a lot of efforts to restore it, Friedrich said.

He also warned that if American intelligence services tapped mobile phones in Germany, they have violated the country's laws and those responsible could face charges of criminal offence.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the NSA's surveillance operations are politically "very damaging". Meanwhile, a report by Bild am Sonntag newspaper said Obama was informed about the NSA's tapping of Merkel's mobile phone already in 2010 by its director.

Justice Minister Leutheusser Schnarrenberger said if the allegations were proved true, it is a "very serious matter" and there can be no "business as usual" with the Americans. She joined the opposition to demand a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate the snooping scandal. — PTI

Strike cripples B’desh; 14 dead

Dhaka, October 28
Two more Bangladesh protesters were killed in clashes on Monday, the second day of a nationwide strike called by the Opposition demanding the prime minister quit and hold elections under a caretaker government.

The two were killed in the north and southeast, raising the overall death toll in the political unrest to 14 since Friday, as schools and businesses remained shut across the country. The police said opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists hacked a rival ruling party supporter to death in the northern town of Rambhadra Bazaar, amid a mounting crisis over upcoming elections.

"BNP supporters hacked the Awami League supporter to death with machetes at Rambhadra Bazar early in the morning," local police chief Saidur Rahman said.

A truck driver also died after being pelted with bricks by supporters of the country's largest Islamist party, a key ally of BNP, in the southeastern coastal town of Satkania, regional police chief Hafiz Akter said. The latest violence comes after last-minute talks on Saturday between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her bitter rival, BNP leader Khaleda Zia, failed to halt the strike and defuse the crisis.

Hasina's appeal to call off the strike occurred during a 40-minute phone conversation - believed to be the first time in at least a decade that the two "battling begums" have spoken, underlining the severity of the crisis. "Begum" is an honorific for a Muslim woman of rank. The BNP and its Islamist allies called mass protests on Friday ahead of the strike to force Hasina to give up power. —PTI

widespread clashes

  • At least 50 people were hurt when a train derailed after suspected opposition activists uprooted rail lines in Lalmonirhat district.
  • In Dhaka, protesters torched an office of ruling Awami League. They also hurled a few handmade bombs.
  • They also torched at least six vehicles in Dhaka and its adjacent areas. At least seven bombs were blasted across the city.
  • A mobile court in Dhaka sentenced three BNP picketers to six months in jail for carrying explosive substances.
