Dussehra celebrated with fervour in city
New Delhi, October 13 Crowds burst into cheers as the fire crackers-stuffed effigies, dotting grounds and open spaces, crackled in fiery splendour at sundown. With the police keeping a hawk-eye vigil, the festivities passed off peacefully in different parts of the city. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi were among a large number of dignitaries who saw the evil going up in smoke at Parade and Ramlila Grounds. Dussehra, which also marks the end of scorching summer and heralding of winter, is preceded by nine auspicious days of Navaratri during which devotees pray, fast and feast. Ramlilas, vivid enactments from the life of Lord Rama, were staged in different parts of the country during the nine days preceding the festival. A number of fairs were also held on the occasion of Dussehra which also symbolises the triumph of warrior Goddess Durga over buffalo demon Mahishasura. |
AAP replaces candidate having criminal cases
New Delhi, October 13 An advocate in Karkardooma court, Surender who was recently appointed as the chairperson of the election committee of the Shahdara Bar Association Election had allegedly used unfair means during the said election due to which the election was later cancelled. However, it is learnt that he tried to keep the AAP's political affairs committee (PAC) in the dark and even in his application for candidature from the Shahdara seat, he had not disclosed the criminal cases and FIRs pending against him. After his selection, the party started receiving complaints from the people, including the bar association. Member of AAP's Political Affairs Committee Manish Sisodia said, "After the declaration of his candidature, we started receiving minor complaints regarding property disputes going against him. He clarified and we found it satisfactory initially. Later, we got to know that he has criminal cases against him that he had not disclosed earlier. We got complaints from members of the bar about his unfair role in the bar elections. We concluded that he is not a good candidate and so he has been removed for misbehaviour and misconduct." This action is in line with the commitment of the AAP to ensure that no person with doubtful credentials shall represent the party in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The PAC has unanimously replaced Surender with Balbir Singh Saini of the erstwhile Delhi Electricity Supply Undertaking, AAP's spokesperson Aswathi Muralidharan confirmed. Signalling a strong message, the party has declared that there would be no compromise on its stand on fielding the candidates with clean image. "Even if on the last day of the nomination, we receive any information against any of our candidate with regard to his criminal record, we will cancel the candidature and keep the seat vacant. In the past, we have made it clear that AAP will only have candidates who have impeccable integrity," said Manish. |
Elections make strange bedfellows
The Congress is eyeing the BJP legislators who are in conflict with the saffron party’s senior leadership over the distribution of tickets Himani Chandel Tribune News Service
New Delhi, October 13 With a focus on increasing the number of its seats, the party is eyeing the sitting legislators of BJP who are going in conflict with the saffron party’s senior leadership over the issue of distribution of tickets. Party sources said that it is in constant talks with BJP’s strong candidates representing constituencies where Congress has not been able to make its mark even for once in the last 15 years. Party insiders feel wooing the sitting MLAs of BJP would increase the chances of securing majority in the polls. The party had won 44 seats in 2008 assembly elections. BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Harcharan Singh Balli, a three-time MLA from Hari Nagar, is one such target for the Congress. “BJP is mulling to bring an Akali candidate from Hari Nagar this time, which might become a reason for Balli to join us,” said a Congress insider. Hari Nagar is a constituency where more than 17 per cent people are Sikhs and 18 per cent are non-Sikh Punjabis. The party is also intending to bring in Shakur Basti’s sitting BJP MLA Shyam Lal Garg as he may have to lose on his seat as former BJP president Vijender Gupta is trying to file his nomination from the constituency. “Garg will probably have to vacate it for Gupta. He has showed interest to join the Congress,” said the sources. Suresh Kumar, son-in-law of Jagdish Mukhi, one of the senior leaders of the BJP from Janakpuri, has joined the Congress for he criticized the BJP for not giving him ticket even after 15 years of service to the party. BJP councillor and former health committee chairman in the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi, VK Monga has also filed his nomination for a Congress ticket from Krishna Nagar. If selected, he might have to face a tough battle from BJP’s Harsh Vardhan. During the last assembly elections, the Congress had secured 42 seats, BJP 23, Bahujan Samaj Party 2 while Rashtriya Janata Dal 1 seat, Lok Jan Shakti 1 and Independent 1. The Delhi Pradesh Election Committee shortlisted three candidates per constituency amongst over 1,400 nominations that it had received till October 6. However, it has not been able to reach a consensus over the Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) with criminal records. The job of screening the candidates is expected to be completed early this week. |
