Safai karamcharis hold protest
Jalandhar, October 3 The agitating safai karamcharis broke windowpanes of his office and scattered garbage in his office. They protested against the stopping of the payment of the housekeeping contractor. When contacted, Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia saw some conspiracy behind the protest in his office. Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia said, “The contractor’s payment was stopped and the decision in this regard was taken in the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting held about 25 days ago. I am just one of the six members of the committee, headed by Mayor Sunil Jyoti and including Municipal Corporation Commissioner as one of its member.” The Senior Deputy Mayor raised a question “Why they held a protest in his office only, that too when he was not in the city. This matter should be investigated.” To a query, Bhatia said the payment of the contractor had been stopped for non-performance by the F&CC and safai karamcharis should not have any objection to that. |

Criticising the SAD-BJP government for the policy, the Congress leaders said, “Gullible persons bought plots and started living there after constructing houses in these colonies as they were too poor to buy houses in posh localities. People have been residing in these colonies for decades and development works have already been done in these localities with MPLAD funds or other central funds.” One of the protesters, councillor Pardeep Rai said, “The Badal government is trying to intimidate ordinary residents by saying that if they do not deposit fee for getting their plots regularised by October 7, FIRs will be lodged against them.” |

‘Negligence’ case: Rashi’s condition improves after dialysis
Jalandhar, October 3 In the meantime, a four member medical board has been constituted by the Chief Medical officer (CMO) to conduct medical investigation into the matter. "After receiving a request for a medical board investigation by the police station concerning, a four member medical board has been constituted, which will first examine the patient and then take opinion from the doctors attending to her presently. The doctors who operated upon her at Vardaan Hospital will also be questioned," said Dr RL Bassan, Civil Surgeon. He also revealed that the medical board would begin its investigation from Friday and submit its report within a week. In the meantime, the doctors attending to her at Johal Hospital had a sigh of relief after Rashi started showing vital signs of life. "We have observed some improvement in her health after the dialysis. She has started responding to our treatment, which is a good sign. Her condition is stable, but she is still in danger," said Amit Jeed, medical superintendent, Johal Hospital. Surprisingly, no monetary help so far has been offered to Rashi's family by the authorities of Vardaan Hospital, where Rashi had developed serious complications. Whether it is a case of negligence by the doctors or a rarest of the rare case of allergy to some common drug will only be revealed once the report of the medical board doing the investigation into the case will come out. Rashi Sharma, a senior lecturer at Ramgharia College got married to Amit Sharma, an advocate, in 2001. She conceived during the same year, but could not sustain the pregnancy. Later, it was revealed that she had a septum (a thick-skinned wall) in her uterus, which needs to be removed before the next pregnancy. She approached Vardan Hospital in July this year and was told that due to extra thickness, the septum would be removed in two surgeries. She had undergone first surgery in July in which 60 per cent of the septum was removed and was told to come again. Yesterday, she was called for the removal of the rest of the septum by Vardan Hospital. |

Sinking profits affect shuttle-shaping skills
Jalandhar, October 3 A number of families belonging to the Bhagat community started making shuttles after shifting from Sialkot (now in Pakistan) post partition. The art of manually making shuttles passed from one generation to the next in Bhagat families but now the new generation has stopped joining the family profession of manual shuttle making. Vijay Kumar’s family is in the profession of shuttle-making since its migration from Pakistan in 1947. His family is settled in Kabir Nagar and he is running a small scale unit of shuttle-making in one room of his house. Now neither he wants his next generation to join, nor his sons want to adopt this profession due to low profit. Similar is the case with about 250 small scale shuttle-making unit owners and nearly 2,000 labourers working in these units. Almost none of them want to pass this profession to his new generation. “Actually the profit is decreasing day by day as the rates of raw material including hen feather, cork and fevicol is increasing but shuttle selling rates have not increased in that proportion. Secondly the policies of the state government including imposing tax is also one of the reasons for low profit.” said Ravindra Kumar, general secretary of Shuttle Cork Mazdoor Union. Elaborating, Ravindra said, “Hen feathers are mainly supplied from Barwala near Ambala and Andhra Pradesh. The rates of feathers have reached almost double within past three months. One kg of feathers were available at Rs 130 three months ago but now we are paying Rs 250 for the same. Similarly we were paying Rs 150 for sixty pieces of corks about one-and-a-half month ago, now we are paying Rs 400 for the same. In the same way, the rates of fevicol have increased by Rs four per kg within a month.” Ravindra said, “I am a graduate and my daughter is doing well in her studies. She wanted to be a doctor but I am unable to get her admitted in medical stream as I am earning less than Rs. 10,000 per month.” “Usually an owner of shuttle-making unit is earning between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000 per month, whereas a labourer working in these units is getting around Rs 5,000 per month after toiling for 12 hours a day.” he added. Vijay Kumar said, “ Entire work of shuttle-making is done manually and nearly 50 boxes (each box containing ten shuttles) are manufactured in a small scale unit. We earn only from Rs four to Rs five profit per box after paying to our labourers.” Interestingly, despite all odds, nearly sixty per cent shuttles are still made in Jalandhar probably as the current generation has no option but to continue with this profession. Badminton shuttles are mainly manufactured in four cities including Jalandhar, Meerut, Kolkatta and Delhi. According to an estimate, 60 per cent shuttles are made in Jalandhar followed by 20 percent in Meerut, 15 percent in Delhi and five percent in Kolkata. Mainly hen feather-shuttles are manufactured in Jalandhar, Meerut and Delhi. However, Kolkata units make duck feather-shuttles. Ravindra said, “ The government should take some steps for improving our condition to sustain this art . Firstly, we should be provided loans liberally at subsidies rates so that we may invest more in our business to get more benefit, secondly the shuttles and raw material should be exempted from tax.” |

Help begins pouring in for BPL family in Chuhrwali
Jalandhar, October 3 While the family was devoid of (and still is) the benefits of any of the government schemes meant for BPL families (except the atta daal scehme), despite being the poorest family in their village, do-gooders have stepped in for their help, after a news report regarding their condition was carried out in The Tribune on September 23. While the family comprises two girls and their elderly grandparents, their visually-impaired grandfather and weak grandmother, who brought them up,were now finding it difficult to sustain a living. The family has now been promised re-building their ramshackle home and several other good samritans have promised financial help on a monthly basis to the girls to ensure proper education. The firm Gripwell has promised to rebuilding their home. One part of the house’s roof had fallen this monsoon, after which an NGO chipped in for help. But almost the entire roof is in a bad shape, as they were laying plastic sheets on it to prevent dripping during the rain. One of the sisters, Raman, said the help from various quarters has given them strength to carry on. She said the Model Town-based Children Welfare Society has promised that they will be depositing Rs 2,000 (each) per month in both the girls’ accounts to help them. Kabal Singh Rattu, a retired Chief Health Inspector, has in turn assured to assist with financial help of Rs 1,000 per month for the family. The Punjab Kesri Group (a scholarship and an educational kit) and the Navjiwan Charitable Society (a one-time scholarship of Rs 5,000) have also provided help to the family. SK Kapoor of the NGO CHITRA, said, “It is overwhelming to see the response the family has received. More good samaritans are also chipping in for help. It has acted as a big support for the family.” While the help has taken a huge load off the tired shoulders of the family, they can use more help given the fact that the grandparents Gurdev Singh (80) and Kartar Kaur are very old and ailing and the girls’ education is yet to be completed. Those willing to help can contact Raman - 98763 - 15369 and KS Nagra (CHITRA) - 82848 - 77877. |
