Tharoor awards NIT degrees
Srinagar, September 22 He said this while addressing a gathering of students, teachers and scholars of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) during its annual convocation at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre here today. Tharoor, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said many complaints had been received this year regarding the poor implementation of the PMSSS, especially in context of the admission quota reserved for state students in various colleges of the country. "Many complaints have been made this year. Human Resource Development Minister Pallam Raju has relaxed the rules of the scheme and improved it further to enable more students of the state to take advantage of this," he said. "I assure you that every complaint and application is being reviewed and will be addressed. It is imperative that we understand that the education we provide here aims at nothing less than preparing our students to compete with the world," he added. Higher Education Minister Muhammad Akbar Lone and Chairman of the Board of Governors Wajahat Habibullah attended the function. Two PhD, 45 MTech and 386 BTech degrees were awarded. Seven gold medals were awarded to toppers of each BTech programme and three to toppers of each MTech programme. As many as 52 gold medals were presented to toppers of batches from 2003 to 2011. Kahipora residents block road
Kupwara, September 22 They raised slogans against the department and blocked the Kahipora-Handwara road for about two hours. They said they were facing problems due to the incomplete work on the bridge. “It has been about eight years that the vital bridge has not been completed by the construction agency. We are suffering due to the incomplete bridge as it takes about an hour to reach Handwara through Zachaldara,” said Habibullah Shah, a local resident. Another resident of the area, Mohd Shafi of Sudal village, said, “It takes about an hour to reach Handwara via Zachaldara. The distance can be completed in just 20 minutes if the bridge is motorable.” They demanded that the work on vital bridge should be sped up and the bridge made motorable at the earliest. “Despite many requests to the civil administration to speed up the construction work on the bridge, nothing has been done. I appeal to the minister concerned to intervene and complete the construction work at the earliest,” said M Shafi Bhat, sarpanch of Kahipora halqa. The villagers called off the protest around 12 noon. Minister for Transport and Handwara MLA Chowdary Mohammad Ramzan said he would direct the R&B Department to speed up the work and complete the bridge at the earliest. “I will direct the department to make the bridge motorable in the shortest possible time so that the problems of the people are mitigated,” he said. |

IGP Jammu visits Rajouri, reviews security scenario in area
Rajouri, September 22 Although all such attempts had been foiled, there was a need of maintaining utmost vigil not only on the LoC but also in the hinterland, he added. During the review of law and order and crime, the IGP called upon all the officers to be vigilant and ensure that there was no law and order problem as there were some forces inimical to peace, desperate to vitiate the atmosphere. While emphasising upon the need to have a professional approach in controlling crime, Kumar said the menace of bovine smuggling, drug pedalling and violence against women had to be given top priority and at the same time to have an excellent rapport with the public while discharging the duties. A youth club, with facilities of free internet library, fitness centre and sports, was also inaugurated by him in the presence of the youth of Rajouri town. In the afternoon, Kumar chaired a public meeting at the Dak Bungalow, Rajouri, in which prominent citizens of the district highlighted various issues, including installation of CCTV cameras, construction of modern police stations, highway patrol vehicles and cranes and effective delivery of police services. Kumar assured them that all the issues would be taken on priority and timely delivery of police services would be ensured. In the evening, he held a darbar of officers and jawans at the District Police Lines, where various grievances of the jawans were redressed on the spot. They were asked to work with sincerity and dedication and also avail the benefits of various welfare schemes introduced by the J&K Police. |

Omar inaugurates Police-Public Mela
Srinagar, September 22 The Chief Minister lit the traditional lamp. Omar, along with the DGP Ashok Prasad and Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association (JKPWWA) president Kiran Prasad, later toured the stalls at the stadium and interacted with stallholders. "The Chief Minister highlighted the role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in safeguarding the lives of the people and maintaining peace and law and order," an official spokesman said. Omar underlined the importance of the Police-Public Mela, saying these events were aimed at generating resources for the welfare of the families of police martyrs. The JKPWWA was the organiser of the festival, held to connect the police and the public. Officials said the revenue generated through the festival was utilised for the welfare of police martyrs' families and their wards. There was a huge crowd here and people were very enthusiastic, an official said. The police-public mela included 40 stalls which had products from all regions of the state. The prime attraction of the event was a raffle draw, which had attractive prizes, including cars, motorcycles and laptops. An official said 19 cars, six motorcycles, six laptops, six tabs, six scooties and six rice cookers were among the top prizes at the draw. |

Employees’ panel to protest against JCC decision
Jammu, September 22 Calling the JCC a ‘government-sponsored agency’ SGEJAC alleged that the JCC has ditched the employees. “All the demands of the employees were accepted by the government in an agreement in 2011, then why the JCC has attended the meeting for negotiation, no negotiation will be accepted less than the signed agreement,” said Suresh Sharma, a leader of
SGEJAC. “We strongly oppose the decision of giving time to the government till September 27, there is no issue left for discussion, government should now announce the implementations,” he added. The SGEJAC claims that they have 70 per cent employees with them and the employees of major departments of the state like
JDA, JMC, Medical, PHE and PDD are with them and JCC have left with Sheep Husbandry and Animal Husbandry departments. “To show our resentment over the issue, we have decided to hold protest demonstrations at all the district headquarters including a major protest near Press Club, Jammu, on Tuesday,” Sharma added. Inter-polytechnic chess competition organised in Purkhoo
Jammu, September 22 The colleges included IECS Polytechnic, North Polytechnic, Government Polytechnic, Jammu, NITS Polytechnic, Kalamkari Polytechnic and Government Polytechnic for Women, Jammu. Sachin Sawhney of Government Polytechnic, Jammu emerged victorious in the competition while Nikhil Koul of the same college finished first runner-up. Sahil Kumar was the second runner-up. Meanwhile, students of North Polytechnic performed various colourful cultural items to enthral the audience. Later, prizes and certificates of participation were presented by Er Vidhi S Singh, chairman, Jamwal Group of Educational Institutions, who was the chief guest. Avneesh, Akash script win for JKCA Greens
Jammu, September 22 Earlier, batting first, JKCA Reds accumulated a challenging total of 226 runs in the stipulated 50 overs. Atul Saini, Rahul Sagotra, Mohit Tang and Tushar contributed 32, 28, 28 and 21 runs respectively. For JKCA Greens, Akash Choudhary was the wrecker-in-chief, striking a four-wicket haul by conceding 25 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Sunil and Abid Mushtaq snared three and two wickets respectively. In reply, JKCA Greens did the needful in 46 overs, losing five wickets in the process. Avneesh slammed a brilliant half-century, hitting 51 runs off 66 balls with the help of six delectable hits to the fence while Surya Mahotra contributed 44 runs off 49 balls. The knock was studded with four boundaries. Ramandeep bagged 3 wickets for JKCA Reds while Rajan and Tayyab shared one wicket each. Peace rally held against human rights violations
Srinagar, September 22 Showket Ashai, Javid Tota, Sonauallah, Sardar Dilbeeer Singh, Sardar Gurcharan Singh and Hilal Ahmad took part in the rally. The chief guest, Renzu Shah, said the time had come that the entire world should join the movement of peace and love and make efforts to put an end to innocent killings throughout the world. He said those who spread hatred and created a wedge between people of different faiths should realise that it caused disaster in the social world order. Prayers were offered on the occasion. Scholars of various communities paid rich tribute to those killed in violence and disaster. Innocent killings were scars on humanity and those involved should be punished for the crimes against humanity, the participants demanded. The campaign would conclude on October 2. |
