Muktsar, September 9
The police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters, after arresting five persons and recovering 45 stolen vehicles worth about Rs 40 lakh along with nearly 20 fake registration certificates from their possession.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Muktsar, Surjeet Singh said that acting on the basis of a tip -off, a night patrolling party led by sub-inspector Paramjit Singh stopped a Bolero vehicle, not bearing a registration number plate, between Inakhera and Mallwala villages last night. Sharp weapons were recovered from the vehicle during the checking.

“During the interrogation, the accused confessed that they were vehicle lifters and the stolen vehicles were kept at an abandoned cattle feed factory near Inakhera village,” said Surjeet Singh.

He said the police party immediately went to the spot and recovered 41 motorcycles (Splendor, CD Deluxe, Discover, Platina, Yamaha and Pulsar), besides a Scorpio, two Bolero vehicles and a tractor.

“The equipment being used to prepare fake registration certificates like seals, diaries, duplicate keys and weapons have also been recovered from the abandoned factory,” the SSP added.

The SSP said it was too early to comment as the police was still working on the case but some officials of the transport department were also involved in the crime.

“Nearly 20 fake registration certificates, prepared using the seals of Bathinda, Faridkot, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Muktsar, Sardulgarh, Abohar and Jaitu transport offices have also been recovered,” claimed Surjeet Singh.

The accused have been identified as Gurtej Singh alias Teja of Bharu village, Sukhdev Singh of Peori village, Veer Singh Kataria of Muktsar, Dharmvir Singh of Raman Mandi and Gursem Singh of Desu Kullianwali village in Haryana.

The SSP further informed that Teja was earlier also arrested in a case registered against him under section 420 of the IPC, while Veer Singh Kataria, who runs a printing press, had prepared the fake stamps.

“The accused used to sell these stolen motorcycles in adjoining states like Haryana and Rajasthan, but they had snatched the vehicles from Punjab. Besides, they were involved in some other cases of snatching too,” said Surjeet Singh.

They had chosen the cattle feed factory, because it was near the highway and it was easy to load and unload the stolen motorcycles there.

A case under sections 399, 402, 379, 411, 420, 465, 467, 471 of the IPC and section 25 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Malout Sadar police station.

Vikram Chaudhary of Jain Nagari and Gurmeet Singh of Baba Deep Singh Nagar, who were wanted in a murder case, have surrendered. They were remanded in police custody for four days today.

Hanuman Dass, a farmer and his son Sandeep Kumar were killed and four others were injured in an exchange of fire between two groups over a land dispute in Raipura village on the Abohar-Seetogunno road on August 29.

Hanuman Dass had purchased more than 9 acres of agricultural land from Raja Ram Chaudhary of Fazilka a few years ago. As Vikram Chaudhary was in possession of the land, Hanuman Dass initiated legal proceedings against the former. The court reportedly decided the case in favour of Hanuman Dass and directed the administration to restore possession in his favour.

Some Revenue Department officials reached Raipura on August 29 to implement the court orders. After being opposed by the other group, they had returned. After their departure, the two rival groups started firing at each other. Hanuman Dass and his son Sandeep died on the spot while four others received bullet injuries and were admitted to different hospitals.

The police had booked Vikram, his brother Vikas, father Krishan Dev and a dozen unidentified persons under various sections of the IPC and the Arms Act. Balluana DSP Veer Chand said efforts to nab the other accused were on.
