SAD misutilised Central funds to tackle floods: Jakhar
Fazilka, August 29 He said the Congress would raise the issue in the Punjab assembly and expose the government. The state party unit would also meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to lodge their protest and demand the utilisation details of the funds released to the Punjab government by the Centre for tackling the flood situation. The party would also meet Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh and inform him about the ground realities during his visit to Chandigarh on August 31. Jakhar was accompanied by Congress MLA from Guruharsahai Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. Jakhar and Sodhi demanded a compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre for farmers whose crops have been completely damaged. Highlighting the plight of the marooned farmers whose standing crops have been inundated for the past fortnight, the CLP leader alleged that the flood-hit farmers have not received any relief from the district administration. Both Jakhar and Sodhi met the Deputy Commissioner of Fazilka, Dr Basant Garg, and demanded adequate administrative measures to provide relief to the flood victims. Accusing the Badal government of having failed in handling the flood situation, Jakhar said the Chief Minister has allowed areas in Abohar and other parts of the district to be inundated while saving the farmers in his constituency, Lambi, in Muktsar district. In reply to question on a luncheon meeting of some Congress legislators with Captain Amarinder Singh, Jakhar denied any factionalism or rift in the state Congress unit and pleaded that the meeting was part of a strategy to expose the "misgovernance" of the Badal government. He admitted delay in the appointment of the district Congress Committee president and hastened to add that the post would be filled up soon. |

Faridkot village youth’s journey from peon to poet par excellence
Faridkot, August 29 Ghugianvi, who became an international fiction writer, was honoured by the CM for his captivating experience rife with challenges. And now after his journey of last 20 years, at the age of 38 and only matriculation as his academic qualification, his books are being taught to MA and BA students while he himself has been a subject of research for the students. His poverty did not allow him to study beyond matriculation and he started working as an errand boy, called Ardali in court terminology, with a judge in
Faridkot. Working at this class IV position, Ninder's duty was to call the offenders and litigants into the court.
Ninder was given the job on the condition that he would also have to work as a domestic servant at judges’ residences. Discontented, he left the job at the age of 18. But his bitter experience as an errand boy squeezed out a book from this young writer and the book “Main Sa Judge Da
Ardali" (I was Once Judge’s Errand Boy) made him more famous than he had hoped for. “The first edition of this book sold over 3,000 copies and later on, it was translated into many languages, including English and Hindi,” said Ninder
Ghugianvi. The autobiography also became a part of the syllabus at Punjabi University,
Patiala, and a tele-film was made based on this book. But hunger forced Ninder to work as a gardener-cum-attendant on a temporary basis in the Punjab Languages Department at Patiala after he left the court job. Here again, the menial chores he was asked to do there made him quit the job. But he kept writing and got his works published in newspapers. Ten years later, Ninder Ghugianvi became a member of the advisory board, an apex policy making and literary award deciding body of the Punjab Language Department where he was a gardener some time back. “It seems the gleam in every heart is not in what it has, but what it can start,” said Ninder who has travelled to many countries in the last 10 years. He was invited to Canada in 2001 and was honoured by its Prime Minister for his contribution to literature. His ardent readers invited him to the US in 2003. In June 2005, he played his favourite musical instrument,
Thumi, at the British Parliament in London in the presence of members of parliament and the Indian community. |
