farm suicides
Bathinda, September 2 Under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), the families held a dharna against the government. The protesters held photographs of their respective family member whom they allegedly lost to debts. The office-bearers of the BKU (Ugrahan) said during this fiscal year, the state government had promised a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of each suicide victim along with a government job. In Bathinda district, the government had identified 980 such families of which only 616 have been given the compensation. Further, the 616 families were paid only Rs 1 lakh instead of the promised Rs 2 lakh. Also, the families are awaiting the promised government jobs. “Even Rs 1 lakh did not come easy. Poor people had to run from pillar to post for it. Different officials have harassed them in one way or other,” said the president of the BKU (Ugrahan) Shingara Singh Mann. A deputation of farmers had met the ADC, Bathinda, on August 8 apprising him of the families that were still bereft of the compensation. The BKU as well as the Khet Mazdoor Union have decided to hold a dharna against the government on September 16, if the government does not yield to their demands. The unions handed over a memorandum of demands to the Deputy Commissioner, Bathinda, to be forwarded to the Chief Minister of Punjab. They demanded that under the recently introduced Food Security Act, farmers should be covered under the crop insurance scheme, given cheap agriculture machinery, high-quality seed, urea and pesticides and a separate union agriculture budget. They suggested that to give an impetus to the MGNREGA scheme, it should be collaborated with the agriculture sector so that poor families get 100 days of ensured employment. Even farm hands could also derive its benefits. FAct file
