PGI docs show concern for patients

Resident doctors wear black badges at the PGI on Monday. Resident doctors today protested against the failure of the PGI authorities to provide state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to patients. Over 1,000 resident doctors performed their duties in various departments and the emergency of the PGI wearing black badges, showing their disappointment over the apathy of the PGI administration.

Finally, water supply restored
Mohali, September 2
The site where the pipelines were damaged at Gharuan village. Finally, water supply in the Phase III pipeline of the Kajauli Water Works was restored this afternoon, and 20 MGD water released on Monday evening The authorities were still apprehensive about the restoration of water supply in Phase IV pipeline. “Some repair work is still pending, which will be completed by tomorrow afternoon”, said an official on the job.

Mayor, BJP president indulge in war of words
Chandigarh, September 2
City Mayor Subhash Chawla today accused the SAD-BJP led Punjab Government and the untrained labour deployed by them for the damage of the Phase III and IV pipeline of the Kajauli Water Works.

It will be functional 24X7.

BJP Kisan Morcha members block traffic
Zirakpur, September 2
Hundreds of visitors and local residents were harried when members of the BJP Kisan Morcha blocked traffic on the busy Chandigarh-Ambala Highway for about three hours to press for their demands.

PM’s visit: Patil takes stock of situation, convenes meeting

UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil today held a meeting with senior officials of the Administration and reviewed the preparedness for the Prime Minister’s visit, who would be in the city on September 14 for handing over the flats to slum dwellers under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.

Govt to invest RS 1,700 cr on rural link roads: Minister
Mohali, September 2
The Punjab Government will invest Rs 1,700 crore in a project to upgrade rural link roads, the work on which will begin next month. This was stated by Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra while interacting with mediapersons at the Majri block office. Rakhra had reached there to participate in the ceremony of assuming charge by Manjit Kaur Majra as the chairperson of the Block Samiti, Majri, and Manjit Singh Khijarabad as the vice-chairman.

A 40-year-old woman was run over by a train near Dhakoli, on the Ambala-Kalka railway line, on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Darshna Devi, a resident of Hem Vihar in Baltana.

Migrant labourer kills wife
Ambala, September 2
The district police has arrested a migrant labourer for murdering his wife. The accused has been identified as Gopal, a resident of Chudiala village. Gopal hails from Lakhimpur Khiri in Uttar Pradesh.

7-yr jail for dowry death
Ambala, September 2
Vimlesh Tanwar, Special Judge, Fast Track Court, sentenced a seven-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 to a resident of Ambala in a dowry death case today. According to the prosecution, on September 8, 1995, Raj Rani, wife of Jhanda Singh, set herself ablaze. The brother of the deceased, Charanjeet Singh, in a complaint against Jhanda Singh alleged that he had been harassing Raj Rani for dowry.

Punjabi University lift MAKA Trophy

Winning of MAKA Trophy for the years 2011-12 and 2012-13 by the Punjabi University, Patiala, took the shape of a mega event with its arrival on the university campus amidst impressive fanfare, beating of dhols, nagaras and fire crackers. The trophy, brought in an open vehicle, was received by the university fraternity of teachers, administrative officers, students and research scholars, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, in the lawns opposite Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall, here today. Punjabi University has won the last year’s trophy by a huge margin of over 20,000 points.

Accused concocts story of marriage to get bail

In the local advocate Amarpreet Singh’s murder case, an accused, Sunbir Singh, allegedly concocted a story of his marriage to get regular bail. The fact was revealed in the preliminary inquiry of the Mohali police to check the veracity of the accused’s claims in his petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

A 25-year-old accused of molesting a four-year-old girl was acquitted after the complainant turned hostile at a local court here today. The girl was allegedly molested around five months ago when she was at a crèche run by the mother of the accused.

22-year-old nurse commits suicide by self-injecting poison at Sohana
Mohali, September 2
A 22-year-old nurse at Sohana Hospital allegedly committed suicide by administering a poisonous injection here today. The victim, identified as Sandip Kaur, a resident of Daun Kalan village, Patiala district, was reportedly upset as her boyfriend had got engaged to some other girl after making false promises of marrying the victim.

Man arrested for raping mentally challenged
Mohali, September 2
The police has arrested a person for raping a 22-year-old mentally challenged woman at her residence at Adarsh Nagar (Balongi). The accused has been identified as Davinder Singh, a resident of Brahman Vasiyan village.

Thieves decamp with jewellery, cash

A daylight theft was reported at a house in Sector 19 today where thieves managed to decamp with jewellery worth around Rs 6 lakh. The house is close to the Sector 19 Police Station.

The Chandigarh Twenty-20 Cricket Association affiliated to the Indian Twenty-20 Cricket Federation will conduct open category cricket trials on September 5 (3.30 pm) at the Shishu Niketan Public School, Sector 43. The selected team will participate in the upcoming T20 All-India Cricket Championship at Mathura (UP), from September 23 to 27 under the aegis of the Indian Twenty-20 Cricket Federation.
