Suicide drama proves fatal for city girl
Jalandhar, August 26 In her dying declaration before magistrate, she said she was having an affair with a boy named Vicky of her locality for the past few years. She said the boy had promised to marry her, but later backtracked, forcing her to take the extreme step. Ekta is said to have stated that she was coaxed by her friend in the neighbourhood, Bindu, to commit suicide so as to pressurise Vicky and his family into marrying her, but the drama proved fatal. The Division Number 5 police has registered a case against Vicky under Sections 420, 506, 309 and 109 of the IPC. Bindu and Vicky were also booked for abetting suicide this morning under Section 306 of the IPC. The police has arrested Bindu. Vicky, however, is at large. |
Poll workshop has officials on toes
Jalandhar, August 26 Deputy Commissioners, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Sub-Divisional Officers, District Transport Officers, MC Commissioners, Excise and Taxation Officers, Tehsildars, Block Development and Panchayat Officers of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran were in the city as part of the training programme of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the General Elections, which are at least five months away. All District Electoral Officers, Additional District Electoral Officers, Returning Officers and Additional Returning Officers of the six districts had been called to attend the workshop, which started at 9 am and went on till 5 pm. The officials were much critical of the exercise, as they said that despite having an experience of conducting elections for several years, they were made to learn the basics of it all over again and that, too, at the cost of making the general public feel harassed for two days. “There still is a long way for the election to be held and we were being taught how to accept nomination papers and to conduct scrutiny. The resource persons were reading out from booklets, which they could have easily circulated to us rather than making everyone miss the office,” said an official. The workshop was earlier scheduled to be held from August 19 to 22. Parminder Singh Sandhu, Joint Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies and nodal officer of the UID project, was the key resource person. He also apprised the officials of the revision summary of the electoral rolls to be started from September 6. Resentment Officials were critical of the exercise, as they said that despite having an experience of conducting elections for several years, they were made to learn the basics of it all over again and that, too, at the cost of making the general public feel harassed for two days. Bad roads: Cong leader writes to Sukhbir
Badal
Jalandhar, August 26 A copy of the letter, released to media, mentioned that the agrarian state of Punjab cannot be on the path of progress until and unless it had a proper metalled road network in the state. “Daily commuters, especially those travelling on two-wheelers, are facing a lot of problems due to the poor condition of the roads. The condition of some of the roads is so bad that it is like a camel's ride while plying vehicles on such roads," rued Mehta. Mehta also mentioned that the financial condition of the municipal bodies was going from bad to worse with each passing day. "Unable to get the roads repaired, the civic bodies are doing a cover-up exercise by simply filling the potholes with mud. It is beyond understanding as to why proper patchwork is not being done," she questioned, adding that not only the roads, faulty sewerage systems are also leading to a lot of problems. "The flooding of the water on the roads on account of the overflow from the sewerage is a routine problem in almost all cities of Punjab, but the state government has not bothered to initiate corrective measures," she added. The Congress spokesperson also stated in her letter that day by day, there are rising accidental deaths because of the bad roads. “Sukhbir is making tall claims about the state being on the path of development, which is nothing but a farce. The government fails to realise that bad roads are the biggest setback for the economy of the state. Buyers and industrialists would not like to invest their hard-earned money in places or cities, where there is lack of basic infrastructure," she asserted. |

The staff said that a decision to allow the construction had been taken by an empowered committee of the government headed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. They said he had been conveyed through a communiqué of Chief Administrator PUDA Manvesh Sidhu to approve the building plan for the construction, which they had done. Manvesh Sidhu could not be contacted as he is away on a tour. Principal Secretary Housing and Urban Development A.Venu Prasad said he was not fully aware of the issue, as a CA was dealing with the case. Two months ago, IAS officer Supreet Gulati, who was then CA Jalandhar Development Authority, had been asked by XEN (Projects), Mohali, to deal with the issue. Vinay Bublani, who holds the same charge now, said he was not dealing with PUDA matters pertaining to the Optimum Utilisation of Vacant Government Land (OUVGL) schemes. Pardeep Sekhri, XEN (projects), PUDA, Mohali, said he did not remember the case off hand. The purchase of the site at Chhoti Baradari, Phase-II, in front of Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences in 2007 remained in headlines, as it went for a whopping amount of Rs 107 crore. As per the PUDA bylaws, an allottee has to construct a building within three years of its sale, following which 2 per cent of the sale amount is levied each year as extension charges. Since it is the sixth year running since the plot was taken by the group in the open auction, the officials had calculated the amount payable to be Rs 5.65 crore, of which an amount of nearly Rs 2 crore is pending. Estate Officer PUDA Jalandhar, Amarjit Bains, confirmed having cleared the plan. |

Jalandhar, August 26 Narrating the incident on phone from England, Advocate Sanjeev Kamboj said, “I was issued an IDP by the Jalandhar DTO on August 13 before leaving for the UK and USA. I was driving a care on the motorway M4 on August 21 when suddenly a police vehicle signalled me to stop.” “When I stopped my car on the roadside, a policeman came and asked me to show driving licence. I handed him over the IDP issued to me by the Jalandhar DTO. The policeman was surprised to see the IDP on an A4 paper and he questioned me whether it was issued by Indian office,” he further said. He further said, “While nowadays even domestic driving licences are issued on smart cards, it is quite embarrassing for me to go through this all.” His father Shiv Kamboj, a UK resident, had to intervene and convince the policeman in question that the IDP was real. “It is very shameful that IDPs are issued on an A4 paper. The transport authorities should take it seriously and change the format,” Sanjeev Kamboj said. When contacted, DTO Dalwinderjit Singh said, “The IDP is issued on A 4 paper across the country. This format is finalised by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). I am in Jalandhar for about a year and I did not get any such complaint so far.” “I agree that the format for issuing IDP should be changed to make it presentable. I have already raised the issue of changing the format for the same during meetings with the state transport officials and also have written to them for the same. They might have taken the issue with the NIC,” the DTO added. |

Month of September to keep us busy with a string of ‘days’
Jalandhar, August 26 "This is a good way to inculcate good thoughts in our present generation but it has to be taken in the right spirit. We can celebrate days like Pardon Day in schools where we can teach them to confess their faux-pas and ask for pardon from their peers. This will not only help us to understand their psychology but will also make them fearless and upright. We can also plan an anti-superstition drive in our locality on a specific day," said Paramjeet Khosla, an educator at Kendriya Vidyalaya No 3, Jalandhar Cantonment. Many NGOs, clubs and communities are observing different days for different causes. Although some celebrate it for social cause, others celebrate it for fun and nowadays most of the corporate houses are celebrating them as part of marketing strategy. "In an era of Internet, social sharing capabilities allow us to share our causes to be heard on Twitter, Facebook etc. When people post all kinds of views and ideas related to that cause, it strengthens it and gives you a reason to celebrate it on a particular day. You can also choose a cause and celebrate it in your locality or school or may be worldwide depending on the circle you have on these social sites," said Saranjit Singh, member of Rotary Club, Jalandhar West. September is also observed in various countries of the world as Better Breakfast Month, Baby Safety Month, Self Improvement Month and Honey Month. |
