Faridkot, August 12
A week after the daughter of a senior police officer demanded a medical seat, claiming herself to be the ward of a terrorism affected person and produced a dubious certificate to this effect, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot has postponed the counselling for MBBS and BDS courses under wards of terrorism affected persons and sports quota, for an indefinite period.

“As there are apprehensions about the use of dubious documents to get these reserved MBBS seats (six under wards of terrorism affect persons quota and three under sports quota), so the BFUHS has deferred the counselling for proper examination of all the certificates before the allotment of the seats,” said Dr SS Gill, vice-chancellor, BFUHS.

Fifty two students who applied for MBBS and BDS sports quota seats have not yet submitted their sports gradation certificates to the Director, Sports, Punjab, said the VC.

The university is treading cautiously in scrutinising the certificates and document of the wards of terrorism affected persons, particularly after the exposure of the use of dubious certificate by the daughter of a senior police officer.

As there are grey areas between the death of family's bread-winner and the death of a family member of those affected by terrorism and riots, the university wants to clear its doubts. While some candidates produced the red cards (issued by the state government to the victims of terrorism and 1984 riots), other students produced the certificates procured from the district administration to lay their claim to these quota seats. So, the university wants to be clear about the credentials of these certificates before allotting a seat, said the VC.

Moreover, the university was today more alert about the violation of Condition No. 18 of its prospectus-cum-information brochure for MBBS/BDS admissions. As per this condition, every candidate and his parents/guardian have to submit a sworn declaration at the time of counselling that the candidate had not appeared for counselling in any other State /UT except for central counselling by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

As this rule was not implemented properly at the time of counseling last week, so over 15 candidates appeared in the counselling in more than one state and some of them got seats in more than one state, thus leaving many others in the lurch.

Today, after the parents of some students submitted a list of these candidates with admission in two states to the BFUHS, the university issued directions to all the newly admitted students to give a fresh undertaking about appearing in counselling only in Punjab.

As there are apprehensions about the use of dubious documents to get these reserved MBBS seats (six under wards of terrorism affect persons quota and three under sports quota), so the BFUHS has deferred the counselling for proper examination of all the certificates before the allotment of the seats.

Muktsar, August 12
Rumours about the notorious "kala kachha" gang of robbers have been giving sleepless nights to the residents of nearby villages and towns, forcing them to conduct community patrolling at night. However, the police has blamed miscreants for spreading panic saying there is not an iota of truth in it.

Last night, a resident of nearby Sangu Dhaun village alleged that he saw three robbers running away after pelting stones at his house. But when he came out, nobody was there.

Meanwhile, he raised an alarm and the villagers started a manhunt.

They even fired gunshots in the air. Later, equipped with sharp-edged weapons and rifles, they conducted community patrolling throughout the night.

Similarly, the residents of Budhimal village too experienced something similar last night. The residents of Jodhu colony too said they witnessed almost a similar scene.

SSP Muktsar Surjeet Singh said, "As of now, there is no report of any such gang operating in our district. So, the people must not get worried about such rumours."
