A day after a rally organised by the Chandigarh police exhibited daredevil stunts performed by bikers, UT Inspector General of Police RP Upadhyaya sought an explanation from the senior officials, including UT DIG Alok Kumar, SSP Naunihal Singh and SP (traffic) Maneesh Chaudhery, asking them to explain the purpose behind conducting such an event comprising illegal acts.

Processing fee hiked by 10%
Mohali, August 12
The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) again increased processing fee by 10 per cent for getting no objection certificate for the sale or transfer of property in residential and commercial sectors. Earlier, for residential property, the fee was Rs 2,500 which has been increased to Rs 2700. In commercial sectors, the processing fee has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,500.

Fear of mystery gang grips P’kula villages

The fear has gripped the villages falling on the Panchkula-Naraingarh road after rumours that the "Kala Kaccha" gang was on the prowl. The rumours spread when some villagers alleged that the gang had struck in Bera village in Dera Bassi and chopped off body parts of people for robbery.

Society chief told to refund money

PGI takes part in live case performance

The Department of Cardiology, PGIMER, for the first time in its history participated in a live case performance with excellent results. A live case performance was transmitted from PGIMER for the Advanced Cardio Vascular Solutions Conference at Hyderabad in collaboration with Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (USA) recognised as the world’s best interventional cardiology forum. There were a total of 11 live case centres, eight national centres and three international (USA, Italy and Germany) that participated in the conference.

Gas technology requires less space for 220kV substation

To get over the problem of space for the setting up of a 220 kV power substation in the city, the UT Administration has now decided to change the technology from air-insulated substation (AIS) to gas-insulated substation (GIS), which requires less space.

BSNL to launch scheme
On the eve of the Independence Day, BSNL is launching a special recharge scheme for pre-paid customers. This scheme will be for ten days from August 13 to 22. Under the new scheme, the customers who recharge for Rs 5,000 will get a talk time of Rs 6,000. For the prepaid customers, on recharge of Rs 300, the customers will get a talk time of Rs 300, while on the recharge of Rs 1,000 the talk time will be Rs 1,100.

Chandigarh: Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, organised interactive sessions for students, parents and teachers with the aim of discussing their particular problems and creating a harmonious environment both in school and at home. Maya Gaitonde, secretary of the Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust in Chennai, conducted the session. She has co-authored the series of books “Living in Harmony”, which spells out a simple yet effective method of teaching human values in schools. In her sessions, Maya Gaitonde stressed upon the importance of including value education in our daily lives and emphasised on the importance of a positive and constructive approach towards all our problems.

Oral health awareness drive
Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, today started a two-day long “Oral Health Awareness” drive on the PU campus. The first day of the Oral Health Awareness Drive “Marching Towards Sparkling Smiles” kicked off with great fervour. Students, interns and faculty of the institute participated in the balloon rally, which was flagged off from the institute. The participants were raising oral health awareness slogans, echo of those high-pitched slogans could be heard across the campus. The march ended at the Student Centre of the university. The interns of the institute enacted an informative street play at the Student Centre on the importance of oral hygiene, demerits of tobacco and related products. Later in the day, a colorful rangoli competition was conducted on the premises of the institute.

6 peddlers arrested; drugs, illegal whiskey recovered

The district police during its campaign against the drug peddlers has arrested six peddlers and smugglers involved in the sale of drugs and illegal whisky and have recovered 20,000 intoxicated tablets, 20 gm smack, 90 bottles of smuggled whisky, a stolen motorcycle and a mobile phone from their possession.

Parul recently hogged the limelight as it represented the country in the second Summer Deaf Olympics at Sofia (Bulgaria) from July 26 to August 4. She is the only girl from Punjab to participate in the World Deaf Olympics. In the first match between India & USA in mixed doubles category, she defeated the USA team at the Demo Tennis Centre Stadium.

UT DSP bags gold in tennis
Patiala, August 12
Chandigarh Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashish Kapoor bagged gold in tennis at the World Police and Fire Games at Belfast after he defeated his counterpart from the United Kingdom. The southpaw from Punjab defeated Andrew Mc Leen 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets to win the medal.

Man convicted in two hearings in kidnap case

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today convicted a Maloya resident in a case of kidnapping in just two hearings. The court convicted Deepak of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl. The accused has also been convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
