Air Force rescues 12 people from river

Bamiyal (Pathankot), August 2
As many as 12 people, belonging to the Gujjar tribe having their dwellings on the banks of the Ujh river, were rescued by the personnel of the Pathankot Air Force base. They were trapped in the swirling waters of the river this evening.

Irrigation experts said nearly 1.60 cusecs of water had flowed in the river which was enough to submerge the Bamiyal police chowki, the village school and the local community centre.

Pathankot Deputy Commissioner Siben C, SSP, SK Kalia and Bhoa MLA Seema Devi rushed to the spot. Apprehending that things may get out of hand, the authorities were quick to requisition a helicopter from the local Air Force base. A three-member team made several attempts to rescue the people.

The SSP, who was among the first to reach the spot, said things were under control once the villagers were rescued. “Initially there was panic all around and we had to pacify the kin of the people trapped in the water. We were constantly in touch with the Air Force station officials who had assured us all help,” he added.

The Gujjars lost scores of livestock. “It was a terrifying time for us. Last year, too, there were floods in the river, but this time the situation was really grim,” said an eyewitness.

Paramjit Kaur of Miani village thwarted a robbery attempt at her brother-in-law's house yesterday.

The police said Paramjit went to the house of her elder brother-in-law, Lakhwinder Singh, who along with his family had gone somewhere. As soon as she opened the gate of the house, three unknown persons, two of them with masked faces, followed her and entered inside. One of them pointed pistol at Paramjit and asked her to handover what she had.

She told them that this was her brother-in-law's house and she had no keys. One of the accused snatched her mobile. Paramjit raised an alarm. After hearing her cries neighbours and passers-by came for her help.

Two of them fled and one was overpowered by people. He was identified as Davinder Singh of Jabal Market, Mukerian. Later, Davinder Singh was handed over to the police.

A case under Sections 392 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against Davinder Singh at Tanda police station. The police is searching for the other accused.
