Police takes out flag march to dispel rumours
Gurdaspur, July 29 Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sukhwant Singh Gill convened a press conference today which was attended by all senior officers and SHOs of the district. The SSP said criminal action would be initiated against miscreants who were spreading rumours. "I have instructed all SHOs to be vigilant and ensure that people, particularly villagers, do not spread rumours which lead to insecurity in the area. Recently, an Army man, who was returning to his native village late at night, was bashed up by villagers who took him to be a robber. In yet another incident, a Home Guard jawan was beaten after some rumour mongers spread the word that he was an intruder. Other such incidents have also come to light following which a sense of insecurity prevails in villages,” he added. Taking cognisance of intelligence reports, Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abhinav Trikha has clamped Section 144 in the district. “I am constantly in touch with both the Gurdaspur and Batala SSPs. We have chalked out a plan to ensure that miscreants who are spreading rumours are taken to task,” the DC said. In the Batala police district, which forms a part of Gurdaspur revenue district and where similar rumours about gun totting robbers stalking villagers were being floated by some unidentified people, SSP Tulsi Ram said he had instructed all SHO’s to take action against such people. Meanwhile, Dera Baba Nanak Congress MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa held a protest rally in front of the Batala SSP’s office today. Castigating the state government for its inefficiency in dealing with criminals, Randhawa said, “The night patrolling initiative, launched recently by the Punjab police in all districts of the state, has failed. The crime rate is increasing day by day.” |

Sarpanch election
Gurdaspur, July 29 The elections, which were held across the state on July 3, were postponed in Sultani village due to the death of Bhajan Singh, a candidate, two days ahead of the elections. The stakes were high as both the SAD and the BJP, failed to reach a consensus on the candidate. The BJP had fielded Dalbir Singh Pappu who was backed by the Dinanagar area chief BD Dhuppar and Manjit Singh Dala. On the other hand, the SAD had fielded Kuldeep Singh, who was being backed by former Cabinet Minister SS Langah and Paramveer Singh Laddi, who is also the president of the Gurdaspur SAD Youth Akali Dal and is considered to be Langah’s blue-eyed boy in Gurdaspur. Munawar Masih, a former member of the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB) and a powerful minorities leader, also canvassed for the SAD candidate. Some Chandigarh-based SAD leaders are said to be backing Langah to the hilt. Recently, a top administrative officer was transferred allegedly at the behest of Langah which clearly proves that he is a force to reckon with in Akali politics in this district. However, despite all his influence and the best efforts he put in, his candidate went down to his BJP rival in a one sided contest. The BJP man garnered 684 votes while the SAD candidate bagged 457 votes. |
