Haridwar stands as a symbol of communal harmony
A peaceful blend of Ramzan and Kanwar yatra Pilgrims offered refreshments by Muslim brethren
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, July 26
The pilgrim city of Haridwar is witnessing two religious festivals at the same time. While the holy month of Ramzan is going on, the Hindu fair of Shravan Kanwar pilgrimage has also commenced this week.

Haridwar, renowned worldwide for its spiritual-religious aspect, is also presenting an ideal example of communal harmony, as both the religious festivals are being observed peacefully.

Despite a large number of Kanwariyas' presence and a substantial number of Muslims residing in Haridwar, there has been no clash, confrontation or any dispute till date. It is a pleasant sight to see the Kanwariyas passing through mosques in suburban Jwalapur, 5 km from Haridwar city, being offered refreshments by Muslims.

Be it elders or children from the minority community, they make it a point to see Kanwariyas with beautiful decorated Kanwars, treading on foot with Ganga jal cans.

As thousands come to the city for fetching the holy Ganga jal to be offered at Lord Shiva temple Shivalingam, the district administration has left nothing to chance to ensure peaceful completion of the two religious festivals.

As a major stretch of Kanwar pilgrims pass through minority-dominated suburban region of Jwalapur and Roorkee, elaborate security arrangements have been put in place.

Apart from heavy deployment of Uttarakhand police personnel, paramilitary troops of Provincial Armed Constabulary, Rapid Action Force and Quick Response Team commandos have been ensured in sensitive areas.

Haridwar District Magistrate Nidhi Pandey has called on saints, Muslim clerics, social organisations and citizens, urging them to cooperate to ensure both the festivals are held peacefully.

Nidhi told that people of Haridwar were presenting an ideal example, with both the religious festivals being observed without any hassle or problem. She added that as a precautionary measure, deployment of police personnel has been done, but mutual harmony and love among both the communities is quite commendable.

"Both Kanwariyas and Roza observers were getting closer to Lord Shiva and Allah, respectively. Names or rituals may be different but ultimately it is the Almighty which is one," said Maulana Aarif. "The pilgrim city has its own bonhomie among different sects and be it Roza or Kanwar fair, it gets organised peacefully due to coordination and cooperation from all sections of society," said Swami Ravindrapuri. Local Hindu residents organise Roza Iftaar for Muslim brothers in Haridwar on regular basis, while Muslims hold Divali Milan function every year.Superintendent of City Police Jagdeesh Singh Bhandari said there had been no communal riots post- Independence in Haridwar, which itself presents an ideal example for other states.

"Mutual harmony among the people is quite laudable. Police just keeps tab on some anti-social elements. Our work is made easier by the mature people from both the communities," added Bhandari.

Rains did some good... replenished groundwater

Mussoorie, July 26
Heavy rains that have caused widespread devastation in villages around Mussoorie may have also done some good by replenishing vital groundwater supplies and recharging aquifers. This has helped in taking care of drinking water needs of Mussoorie.

Heavy rains in the town and adjacent villages have led to the formation of many new springs and waterfalls, which are providing a panoramic view of the mountains, especially in the rain shadow region of Kempty Falls on the Mussoorie-Yamnotri highway.

Tourists arriving in a small number in the town are astounded to see waterfalls formed on roadsides due to incessant rains during the past several days.

Environmentalists say heavy rains do cause damage to life and property but also help in recharging underground aquifers and thus providing much-needed drinking water to Mussoorie.

Eminent environmentalist Vipin Kumar Gupta says the increase in the rainfall augurs well for the hill town as it will help in raising the groundwater level, which will come handy during the dry season.

Jal Sansthan officials say heavy rains have helped the department in storing additional water in reservoirs around Mussoorie. This will be used to supply drinking water during the summer. —TNS

Hoarding Association seeks stay on MC tender procedure
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, July 26
The allocation process of the hoarding bid is getting embroiled in controversy, as city-based Hoarding Association has sought stay on the tender procedure being adopted by the Municipal Corporation.

Hoarding Association had moved Nainital High Court, objecting the procedure being adopted by the corporation regarding allocation of hoarding rights, which they allege is being done to provide profit to an outside state-based rich hoarding agency.

As the High Court has put a stay on the opening of the tenders meant for allocation of the hoarding process till its future directive, the association members today feared that despite the stay, the MC may secretly open the tender or give temporarily the tender to the alleged hoarding agency.

Rishi Sachdeva of Haridwar Hoarding Advertisers Association said that MC was playing a monopoly game and trying to accrue huge sum being offered by outside advertisers.

He said that local advertisers were being neglected, despite them furnishing advance sum to the corporation to the tune of Rs 5 lakh.

A total of 350 hoarding sites fall in the periphery of the city Municipal Corporation, for which one-time annual charge is taken by the MC, from advertising agencies. But now in an advertisement, it made it clear that through tender process, only one agency will be given all the hoarding rights for a year.

While Ashish Gupta, another member, said that six agencies from their association had submitted advance sum, but MC and its officers seem to be hell bent on giving the tender to the outside agency.

In a Right to Information query of the association, the MC had replied that they did not have any bylaws and are sticking to the previous Municipal Committee laws only. So they are not bound to advertisers' association advance deposit, while allocating new tender process.

On this Mayor Manoj Garg said that he will look up to the court's directive and make
sure the process and procedure regarding allocation of hoarding rights are done as
per legality.

Haridwar corporation advertisement officials point out that allegations of city-based advertisers are baseless and no one should have qualms about an open tender process.

The corporation is also envisaging a new hoarding policy for which the city periphery will be divided into two zones, Shanti Kunj Chandi Ghat Chowk and Chandi Ghat Chowk till Pull Jatwada, Jwalapur.
