Children, parents harassed as auto, van drivers go on strike
Dehradun, July 23 The Dehradun traffic police had yesterday impounded their vehicles for overloading. This morning auto and van drivers started gathering at the old bus stand, Gandhi Road, and parked their vehicles. They resorted to sloganeering against the police and administration. The drivers alleged that the police was trying to make them jobless. The demonstrators also told other auto drivers to join them in the stir. The Dehradun School Van Association office-bearers today visited the Regional Transport Office, Dehradun, and submitted a memorandum alleging large scale harassment at the hands of the police. A delegation of auto and van drivers also met Congress MLA Subodh Uniyal for seeking his intervention in the matter. Parents in Dehradun had a tough time taking their wards to the schools. Traffic jams were caused at the prominent roads leading to the schools during morning and afternoon hours. |
MDDA sends housing scheme blueprint to HUDCO
Dehradun, July 23 However, private builders hardly adher to this norm. MDDA, too, has been clearing projects by ignoring this fact. But when it came to the housing project of MDDA itself, the board has shown quite strictness and made it compulsory for it to take proper clearance from the department on the matter. Vice-Chairman, MDDA, RM Sundaram, said: ''We have submitted Detailed Project Report of the housing scheme to HUDCO. The Project Management Unit is scrutinising the report. Meanwhile, we have also applied to the State Pollution Control Board for its approval.'' He added that the Centre was providing subsidy in the project. ''There is provision of subsidy up to Rs 50,000 on each flat which comes under the slot of ''Economic Weaker Sections.'' Therefore, one copy of the DPR is also sent to the Centre. Sundaram said the tender process would begin after getting the approval from the State Pollution Control Board. The changes have been made in the scheme of things for this project. He said:'' In this project, we will hold a lottery of the applicants first. Those who got selected in the lottery process will be charged the cost of flats in a few instalments.'' Besides EWS sections, flats will also be built under various other categories. Under this scheme, 144 EWS flats will be built on the area of 35 sq metres, 224 MIG flats on 72 sq metres, 96 flats on 46.58 sq metre and 224 LIG flats on 45 sq metres of land. |
Mussoorie safe for tourists, says govt
Mussoorie, July 23 The article had highlighted the need to segregate the destinations such as Mussoorie that are safe for tourists from the disaster-affected ones so that the economy of the region does not suffer due to the negative publicity. The state government responding to the article that appeared in The Tribune on Sunday has finally issued an advertisement stating that the hill town of Mussoorie along with the lake city Nainital and Corbett Tiger reserve are safe for tourists and they can visit these places without any fear. Shravan Kanwar pilgrimage begins
Haridwar, July 23 On the first day, thousands of Lord Shiva devotees, popularly known as Kanwariyas, entered Haridwar from different states. They were seen treading on the kanwar patri and national highways passing through Haridwar, chanting "Bum Bum Bhole " and "Om Namah Shivay". Initially, Kanwariyas from far-off states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh come as they have to tread long distances. At a later stage, the kanwariyas from the neighbouring states like Haryana, New Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh arrive in Haridwar-Rishikesh. The mela administration has made elaborate arrangements for the kanwariyas, with facilities like rest camps, drinking water, sanitation, street lighting, hand pumps, health check-up camps and guidance facility provided on the kanwar patri. In view of the Shravan Kanwar yatra, traffic on the kanwar stretch has been stopped for two weeks for easy commuting of Kanwariyas. City Police Superintendent Jagdeesh Singh Bhandari said policemen with kanwar experience were being given priority in allocation of duty points. The Municipal Corporation is also spraying limestone and cleaning garbage on the kanwar routes and inner city mela zone. |
Minister tells officials to ensure cleanliness
Dehradun, July 23 Addressing a meeting of senior health officials, the minister said health services and cleanliness should be ensured in the mela area. He said the health authorities should also ensure that Kanwariyas get clean food to eat and asked them to make raids on restaurants, hotels and dhabas on a regular basis. Health officials of the Haridwar Municipal Corporation informed him that 200 toilets had been made in the Kanwar mela area. — TNS |
Anti-encroachment drive gets under way
Haridwar, July 23 The most-affected areas include the Kanwar market, the upper road, Moti bazaar, Pant Deep parking lot and Rodi Belwala, where encroachment are being removed to allow free movement of pilgrims and locals. Circle officer Jodh Ram Joshi said they were facing difficulties in removing encroachments owing to a rush of Kanwariyas and for the time being were removing only temporary encroachments. Permanent encroachments were being earmarked and would be removed post the Kanwar pilgrimage. He said police teams had been formed to carry out the drive. Joshi asked traders, street vendors and hawkers to clear the encroachment themselves by tomorrow, otherwise stringent action would be taken against them. “We are making all efforts to remove as many encroachments we can in this short span of time. If the traders' community cooperate and understand the necessity of free space, we can better manage the rush of Kanwariyas and traffic,” said Mayor Manoj Garg. Tej Prakash Sahu, a city trader representative, said an encroachment drive just before any mega fair or festive bathe was not a long-term solution. A detailed long-term policy was the need of the hour, he said. "The Municipal Corporation or the mela administration should arrange alternate and permanent place, from where we can carry out our business," said Shanjay Chopra, a representative of small-scale traders', hawkers and vendors. |
38 persons from Doon went missing in disaster
Dehradun, July 23 While holding a meeting with officials from the district administration and police, he directed the Subdivisional Magistrate to ensure quick action after carrying out a complete enquiry as per the given parametres in this regard about people missing in the district. He said financial assistance would be given to the dependents of these missing people under four categories. The first category comprises those who lived at Kedarnath, Rambara, Gaurikund, Sonprayag, Gobindghat and other affected places in the state and missing since June 16. In the second category comes those people who lived in the villages situated near the rivers or had gone there to earn a living but were found missing since the flash floods took place. In the third category, fall those people who went to the affected region for some purpose and did not return since the disaster struck. The tourists and pilgrims come under fourth category, who came to travel in the affected region and went missing after the calamity. The DM said: ''It is necessary to lodge FIRs in police stations or in areas under the revenue police. The FIRs will be registered by the family members of the person concerned and if this is not possible, then these will be filed by any other legal heir. The heir will give an affidavit specifying that the person had gone missing and the information furnished by him is true. In case if it is detected that he received the relief amount through fraud at later stage, then he will have to return the amount. Suitable legal action will also be taken against him. Hence, this affidavit will be notarised and secured in the permanent documents.'' 20 out of 32 cases relating to disputed property settled
Dehradun, July 23 The cases resolved were those where either no objection was raised or the parties involved solved it among themselves or one party withdrew the case. However, one 12-year-old case pertaining to property dispute between Tejwinder Singh and Virender Uniyal was resolved but amid pandemonium. The verdict was passed in the favour of Tejwinder Singh. The land in the question on EC Road valued approximately Rs 30 crore. Some Congress councillors were still registering opposition on the decision and might rake it up again. HelpAge India flags off 40 tonnes of ration
Dehradun, July 23 Country head (programme and emergencies) of HelpAge India Avinash Dutta said the organisation had been making efforts to distribute need-based relief. He said Help Age India intends to start a programme for the restoration of livelihood for the affected families as many such families had lost youths and income earners and elderly people had been left with no source of regular income. He said Kalimath village in Ukhimath block of Rudraprayag district would be taken up in the first phase of the programme. Dr Aapga Singh, Uttarakhand state head of HelpAge India disclosed they had appealed to corporates, institutions and individuals for donations in aid of victims and also for volunteer services. Raincoats given to 258 students
MUSSOORIE: Employees of Sterling Resorts group distributed raincoats to 258 students from government schools in and around Mussoorie under the corporate social responsibilty (CSR) programme in a function held here yesterday. The resort group also resolved to support the adjacent vllages which were damaged in the recent natural disaster. Resort manager Rajesh Pandey said they were committed towards the well-being of society and would continue to serve it in various ways. He said the resort employees had already distributed blankets in the disaster-affected villages and was ready to help in all possible ways. The MC president, Manmohan Singh Mall, was the chief guest on the occasion and he distributed the raincoats to the students and commended the efforts of the resort employees. |

CM meets Sonia
Dehradun, July 23 Bahuguna said Sonia Gandhi enquired about the requirements of the Uttarakhand Government in more effective rehabilitation of the affected families. He said Sonia would be visiting the disaster-affected areas next week, if the weather permitted. The Chief Minister also met Ambika Soni, general secretary and in charge of the Uttarakhand Congress affairs, and gave her details of the relief operation under way in the state. The Chief Minister also met Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati, who was under treatment in a Delhi hospital. Mussoorie, July 23 In the first final of junior division, Manav Bharti International School defeated Mussoorie Public School by margin of 15-9 in the stipulated period. In the second final of senior division Central School for Tibetan defeated Mussoorie Public School by margin of 31-27 in a closely contested match. Mussoorie Public School defeated Oak Grove School in the first semi-finals by margin of 16-13 while CST routed Manav Bharti International by a margin of 37-06 to reach the finals. The Chief Medical Superintendent and Medical Adviser to Uttarakhand Basketball Association, Vinod Nautiyal, distributed the trophies to the winners on the occasion.
