48 Doon buildings in dilapidated condition
Dehradun, July 22 But Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has not learnt any lesson. It is the primary responsibility of DMC to identify and demolish such dilapidated premises in the city. But after just identifying some of them, around 48, over the last few years, the DMC has not yet demolished any of these. According to sources, DMC also charges hefty sum from the building owners to bring down the worn-out structures. Quite interestingly, in many cases, people themselves came to DMC to demand demolition of such structures. Despite that , officials are not taking any action. Devesh Prasad, resident of Lunia Mohalla, deposited Rs 10,000 with DMC two years ago to undertake demolition exercise of his old house, but nothing happened. He said: ''It was two years ago that DMC estimated the demolition cost of my old house to be Rs 10,000. I paid the amount instantly, as I wanted quick action, keeping the susceptibility of the structure in view. But two years lapsed, DMC officials did not send any one for the demolition. I am tired of complaining on this matter.'' Ram Kumar from Peepal Mandi, too, had been making rounds of DMC for the last several years. He said:'' My ancestral home is more than 100 years old and has developed deep fissures. Rather, a part of it has also fallen down. But DMC officials are neither doing anything on their own nor letting me to demolish it myself.'' Brijesh Sundriyal of Khudbuda Mohalla said he met many officials on the seat of Mukhya Nagar Adhikari (MNA) over the years, but each one heard him out, expressed sympathy , assured of rapid action but nothing happened afterwards. He asked a pertinent question that if the building fell down on its own and harmed anyone or damaged any property, would DMC own responsibility for that ? Similar complaints have been made from people in the residential areas such as Mannuganj, Hanuman Chowk, Purana Rajpur, Adat Bazaar, Kotwali area, Dhamawala, Moti Bazaar, Tilak Road, Jhanda Bazaar, Saharnpur Chowk and Kanwali Road. The process of identification is repeated every year but action remains missing. MNA Ashok Kumar said:''Many of the cases related to dilapidated buildings are controversial. The owners want to demolish the buildings to oust the tenants occupying the house for decades together. Some of them are fighting court battles also. Above this, DMC has shortage of staff, because of which we are unable to take action in such cases.'' |

corridor where public could sit.” He said employees brought their own water bottles or arranged for small containers but the public faced lot of inconvenience in the absence of water coolers. He demanded two water coolers there. In view of the shortage of furniture in the rooms of officials /employees, he placed the demand of at least 40 chairs and 16 new almirahs. There is no arrangement for electricity backup for power cut or shutdown. He said: “As the complex is closed from all sides, the employees feel suffocated when electricity supply snapped. We need at least two more persons to clean it time to time.” Negi also alluded to many other shortcomings such as absence of curtains or non-functional lock system.
