MC cuts water supply to 8 hrs
Jalandhar, July 16 While earlier water was being supplied for 12 hours from 5 am to 10 am, 12 noon to 2 pm and 5 pm to 10 pm, the same has been scheduled from 5 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 9 pm with no water supply in the afternoon. Residents are annoyed with the MC for reducing the water supply hours, as it is almost next to impossible to get proper supply in a majority of the localities of the city without using "tullu" pumps. Now residents' problems have aggravated, as the MC Jalandhar (MCJ) cut down the water supply by four hours a few days ago in the name of water conservation. Residents and the opposition Congress have demanded to restore the earlier water supply, especially during the afternoon, to facilitate the general public in getting their routine works done without any difficulty. Demanding immediate restoration, a housewife Bimla Mohindru of the Krishna Nagar locality, said, “Though the MC officials state that the water is supplied from 5 to 9 in the morning and in the evening, the same was interrupted during power cuts. Secondly, she used to wash clothes and utensils during afternoon and it has become very difficult for her to do so, as water is not supplied in the afternoon and she could also not store much water for the same.” Local Congress leader Rajinder Beri also demanded that the MC should immediately restore water supply, as water was the basic requirement of the residents. Earlier also, the MC decided to reduce the water supply in February after Mayor Sunil Jyoti had visited the water treatment plant at Pholariwal. At that time, the Mayor had said that the volume of water supplied across the city by the MC was at least 30 million litres a day (MLD) more than the requisite norms. Ideally, we should have been supplying 155 MLD, but we have been giving out 185 MLD. This is putting too much of a load on the treatment plant, which has a capacity to treat 150 MLD now." Later, the water supply was restored after a demand by residents at the start of the summer season a few weeks ago. |
district administrative complex Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, July 16 Accessibility to various floors has been a major problem for many elderly and physically challenged persons visiting the office for various purposes. Since important departments, including the employment exchange and labour department are situated on the third floor, it is extremely difficult for the staff and the visitors to shuttle up and down several times a day for their work. The offices of the election department, National Informatics Centre and the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum are housed on the second floor, while that of the District Transport Office, Regional Transport Authority and Revenue Department lie on the first floor. As it rained heavily last week, the base of the lift had huge water accumulated there. The office has so far only managed to get the accumulated water pumped out, while the repair work is pending. There are around five physically challenged employees in the DC office. The advocates visiting the consumer forum for fighting their cases have been an aggrieved lot. Ashok Sharma, a physically challenged advocate, said it was extremely difficult for him to climb the stairs yesterday. “Ensuring accessibility in the complex should be a priority with the administration, which it does not realise,” he lamented. Septuagenarian advocate KC Malhotra, too, said that without lifts getting operational, it was difficult for any elderly man like him to move up two floors. “I went up to the first floor, took some rest and then took stairs further up. There will be people older than me. I really wonder, how they would be going up for their works,” he said. The GA to DC, Dr Sanjeev Sharma, said that he was getting the work done on a priority basis. “I will get the lift repaired at the earliest,” he said. |
Upload lists of illegal colonies on web, DC tells officials
Jalandhar, July 16 Aggarwal asked the officials to upload such lists with each certified page on the websites for the information of the residents and the colonisers. He said the head of the respective department would be made accountable for any illegal colony left out in the list. The officiating DC asked the officials not to include defaulter colonies (wherein coloniser has sought the due approval but not paid the EDC charges) in the list of the illegal colonies. “We somehow committed this blunder in Amritsar but had to eventually make the correction,” he said. The DC reiterated that no registries of properties should be done in illegal colonies and any tehsildar or naib tehsildar found doing this would have to be answerable. Colony-wise agitation soon
The Congress will soon start a colony-wise agitation in the city to protest against the new policy of the state government to regularise illegal colonies after depositing a huge amount. Talking to The Tribune, Congress leader Rajinder Beri said, “We will meet representatives of the colonies declared illegal in the cities and will hold a colony-wise agitation with welfare societies of those colonies in a few days.” To a query, he said, “We are not in favour of illegal colonies where the residents are not provided basic amenities. We want that the government should take action against such colonies as a first step and no illegal colony should be allowed to come up. We want that the new policy should not be implemented retrospectively, as the residents residing in such colonies are not at fault. The new policy should be implemented only for new colonies and a genuine amount should be charged from colony developers.” Meanwhile, criticising the SAD-BJP government for introducing the “anti-public” policy of regularising illegal colonies after depositing a huge amount, former MLA Jagbir Brar also raised questions over the implementation of the policy retrospectively. |
Colonisers assn to hold protest on July 22
Amritsar, July 16 The decision was taken after holding over a two-hour-long protest at the revenue office in the Court complex. Members of the association raised slogans against the SAD-BJP coalition government and its restrictive policies against the real estate sector, said association’s district president SK Vashisht. The Punjab Colonisers and Property Dealers Association is annoyed at the recently unveiled state government’s policy regarding the regularisation of unauthorised colonies. The PCPDA said the compounding fee, which is collected from the colonisers and the development charges, which are collected from the property buyers, have been raised unproportionately for regularising the unapproved colonies. Association district president SK Vashisht said high compounding fee and development charges would hit the colonisers and end users. He said the real estate industry was already under recession in the state, in general and Amritsar, in particular. He said the comparison between the compounding fee and development charges for unlicensed colonies were unreasonably high as well as unrealistic. The government had fixed compounding fee per acre for cities like Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar at Rs 2.50 lakh for colonisers and Rs 250 per square yard development charge from plot holders as per the 2007 policy. Now, the same compounding fee has been fixed at Rs 15 lakh for these cities and development charges at Rs 500 per square yard. |
Jalandhar, July 16 Area councillor Balraj Thakur said notices had been issued to withdraw their boundaries on their own in a day, or else demolition exercise would be carried out by the department soon. — TNS |
Suwidha Centre: Token system adds to agony of applicants in hot weather
Jalandhar, July 16 While those making it to the centre are able to conveniently get token from 9 am to 9:30 am, those coming anytime later have to stand in queues for 30 minutes to an hour. Since there is no provision of an air-conditioner at the window where tokens are issued, it becomes extremely suffocating for the applicants to stand there in scorching heat. The queues become so long that these trail till outside the verandah, with those at the tail end forced to stand directly under the sun. The rush starts receding after 12:30 pm and the counter closes at 1:30 pm. Only those coming for affidavit are allowed till 3 pm. Any applicant visiting the Suwidha Centre for getting a marriage certificate, SC/BC certificate, arms licence, counter sign or medical test for learning licence has to first get a token issued. There are about 300 tokens issued for the SC certificate and as many for the learner’s licence. There is an average footfall of 2,000 persons at the Suwidha Centre daily for application or receipt of documents, most of whom come accompanied by at least one family member. Another issue with the centre is that with more services added and the number of applicants increasing each day, there seems to be a lot of space constraint now. “The noise level inside the centre remains quite high throughout the day, making us feel as if we are working in a bus stand,” said an employee. Arvinder, an applicant, said he had come here to get an SC certificate and had been standing in queue for 45 minutes just to get a token. “It has been such a torture. It was far easier applying for the same certificate in the department. It was just a matter of two minutes then. With service coming to Suwidha Centre, things have rather become more inconvenient,” he fumed. ADC Praneet Bhardwaj, when contacted, said he was planning to evolve the system to make things more convenient to the public. |

Eunuch’s murder remains a mystery
Jalandhar, July 16 Mahant was stabbed to death and her body bore several knife injury marks. Having interrogated several eunuchs, the police has so far found that she did not interact much with anyone and hardly had any visitors to her place. It was perhaps for this reason that no one got to know of her murder even two days after she had been killed. The police suspected that it was the work of someone known since the killers had been looking for something and had messed up the house for the same reason. “We have been interrogating the drivers or any other visitors to her house for any clues,” said ACP (West) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu. Meanwhile, the police is also clueless in yet another case, where the burnt body of a woman was recovered from Kotli Sheikhe village near Maqsudan on March 31. The woman’s face was burnt beyond recognition as the miscreants had put a tyre around her neck and set her body ablaze. SHO Maqsudan Piara Singh said he had joined as the SHO at the police station after the episode. “All of what I know about it is that there has been no headway,” he said. The much-hyped December 2011 murder case of stock broker at Civil Lines Parveen Dhall, too remains a mystery. A pedestrian had seen the body and rang up the police, who found two cellphones from the pocket of the victim. A case had been registered at the New Baradari police Station and the police was hopeful of getting some clues from phones but to no avail. Another murder case of an electrician of Basti Nau area, dating back to 2011, remains to be solved. SHO Division Number 5 said the body was found around the college campus. “The man had two marriages. His second wife and sons were desperate to know what led to the incident. We probed it from all angles but failed,” he added. |
Vacant plots turn into garbage dumps
Jalandhar, July 16 The vacant plots without any boundary wall could be spotted in almost all the residential areas in the 60 municipal wards of Jalandhar. Some of the areas wherein the vacant plots are serving the purpose of garbage dump include Guru Nanak Pura East, Dashmesh Nagar, Ladowali Road, Bashirpura, Ajit Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Kapurthala Road, Adarsh Nagar and Gurjit Nagar. "Because of the garbage, the threat of the epidemic looms large. Also, stray animals could be spotted inside the plots", said Jagdev Singh Sran, a resident of Gurjit Nagar. “There are many vacant plots in our area and all of them are serving the purpose of garbage dumping. Polythene waste, wild grass and filthy water in vacant plots had made our life a virtual hell”, said Aakash Chopra, a resident of Guru Nanak Pura, while adding that even the employees of corporation throw waste in vacant plots. Perturbed with the problem, residents of many other areas pointed out that they can’t breath in fresh air because of the foul smell emanating from the garbage dumped in vacant plots. Majority of the people are of the view that civic body should issue instructions to the owners of the vacant plots to make sure that there is proper boundary wall and a gate should be installed. On account of some official meeting, the Jalandhar Municipal Commissioner Vinay Bublani was not available for comments. However, officials dealing with the sanitation wing said that they will bring the matter in the notice of the senior authorities for permanent solution to the problem. |

ACP (West) RPS Sandhu said that four fluorescent jackets and two long range torches had been procured for each police station. He said the duty of the night squad began at 10 pm and went on till 6 am. He added the squad members would have night duty for three days, followed by morning duty for the next three days. Theekri pehras had also been started with strict instructions to the villagers that no one should be armed with anything more than a stick and to immediately alert the police when they suspect someone with wrong intentions. |

DAV students shine at space design contest in Toronto
Jalandhar, July 16 The school authorities stated that the problem of increasing debris in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is the burning topic in the field of space sciences these days. “As a large number of satellites are launched by many countries across the world. These satellites have their specific time period, after which they remain in the space and keep revolving at different inclinations and altitudes,” said school authorities. These defunct satellites sometimes collide into each other and increase debris. Scientists apprehend traffic-jam in space because of debris in future. Now, the scientists have started thinking about the problem of debris. Various projects are being initiated to collect 75 per cent of the debris in LEO by 2075. There are various studies being done about the techniques to collect debris and recycle it in the LEO itself, added school authorities.
