Budgam/New Delhi, June 15
Even as the BJP-JD(U) alliance teeters on the brink, the Congress today put out feelers for Nitish Kumar, calling his party “secular and like-minded”. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, however, said the decision to invite the NDA’s disgruntled partner to join the UPA would be made only by his party’s senior leadership.

Modi minister gets 3 years in jail for illegal mining
Rajkot, June 15
A senior minister in the Narendra Modi government was today sentenced to three years imprisonment by a court in Porbandar in the Rs 54-crore illegal limestone mining case of 2006. Gujarat Water Resources Minister Babu Bokhiria was convicted by Chief Judicial Magistrate CV Pandya.

Punjab okays watered-down property tax in urban areas
Chandigarh, June 15
After dithering for about a year, the Punjab Cabinet today approved imposition of property tax in a diluted form in urban areas in the state. The Cabinet also approved a proposal to amend the Punjab Municipal Act 1911 and the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 to levy the property tax.

Veteran communist leader Satyapal Dang, who was in the forefront of the battle against terrorism and secessionism in Punjab, breathed his last after a prolonged illness at a private hospital at 5 pm here today. He was 92. Dang's body will be kept at the Ekta Bhawan, the local CPI office.

Monsoon to hit Punjab, Haryana in next 3 days

New Delhi, June 15
The plains of Punjab and Haryana already experiencing pre-monsoon rain will receive monsoon showers within the next three days, almost 10 days in advance. The seasonal rain has arrived early in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department says conditions are favourable for it to further advance into some more parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh along with Punjab and Haryana in the next three days.
