Hearing on unauthorised construction of shops at Congress Bhawan today
Jalandhar, June 5 The MC had earlier issued show-cause notices to the District Congress Committee, seeking its reply on the charges, including the construction of shops in an illegal manner without due approval from the Jalandhar Improvement Trust which had allotted the land from the Rajinder Nagar scheme. The charges also included putting the land meant for special purpose area for commercial use without consent. One of the main charges was also that the committee had not even bothered to take a formal possession of the land from the Trust. The committee members have been called once again tomorrow to submit their final say on the matter, after which Commissioner Viney Bublani is likely to pass the orders. The case
The matter had been raked up by RTI activist and BJP leader Manit Malhotra and it was on August 23, 2012, that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had passed the orders to the Chairman, Jalandhar Improvement Trust, to look into the matter and decide the case in three months. While the time lapsed on November 23, 2012, the then officiating JIT chairman-cum-DC Priyank Bharti had said that it would be the MC officials to take a call on the matter, as the scheme had been handed over to the latter. The two civic bodies kept on passing the buck till there were contempt proceeding initiated by the court. Acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh, hearing the case on May 1 this year, had ordered, “The appropriate order regarding the removal of the unauthorised shops, if any, must be passed within one month.” In his complaint, the BJP leader had mentioned that the District Congress Committee had been allotted a 1-kanal 8-marla land meant for a social institution in the year 1973-74. The court had ordered that the fact as to whether the construction of shops along the roadside had been sanctioned or not be checked and its original plan be also verified. The district Congress claims to have provided the site plan both to the MCJ and the JIT in 1982. |

Two killed in road accidents on Pathankot road
Jalandhar, June 5 Both accidents took place in a gap of just 1 km within an hour’s time. The first accident took place at 9 am near Raowali village where a car and an auto-rickshaw collided. The car coming from the Bhogpur side rammed into the divider, while the auto-rickshaw turned upside down. The driver of the car (bearing registration number PB-08-BZ-0729) managed to escape from the spot. The auto driver, identified as Raman Ghai, from the Niwin Chakki area died on the spot. The five persons from Bihar, who were riding the auto-rickshaw, got injured and were rushed to Civil Hospital. In less than an hour, another accident took place between a bike and a truck near Bulanpur village entrance at 9 am. The truck dragged the 22-year-old biker to some distance, leading to his death. Policemen from the Maqsudan police station said the biker, Sukhmanjit, of Bulandpur village was about to take a turn towards the village when the truck rammed into it. The truck then collided with a car which fell off the service lane. The car driver got injured in the accident. At this, agitated relatives of the biker and residents of the area got together, blocked the road and even planned to set the truck afire which was somehow averted by the timely intervention of the police. SHO Maqsudan Piara Singh said a case had been registered under Section 304-A against the truck driver and the car driver. He said no arrest had been made in either case as the accused managed to run from the spot. |

Private hospitals fail to give information on infant, maternal deaths
Jalandhar, June 5 The incomplete and inadequate information provided by these health care institutions have not only been hindering the process of reviewing the cause of the deaths, but also misleading the government to take various measures to tackle the situation. In nutshell, the practice by private health care institutions is being seen as an attempt to disobey the health department. The startling facts recently came to light at the monthly review meeting on maternal deaths, chaired by Dr RL Bassan, Civil Surgeon, where he said that certain private nursing homes were not cooperating with the health department by not providing the proper records of maternal deaths at their hospitals. This has not only raised doubts on the command of the Civil Surgeon but also on the functioning of these health care institutions. This clearly means that many innocent people were not getting adequate health care facilities at these private institutions despite making huge payments, said Surinder Mittal, a city resident. Dr Shiv Dyal Mali, district family welfare officer, claimed that the practice had been affecting the process of maintaining the official records, besides hindering the planning of the government to find out the exact causes of such deaths. The offenders were liable to be prosecuted as per the law, he added. |
Children’s World: Season to splurge
Jalandhar, June 5 Safe chemical-free bottles, plush cribs, remote-controlled cars, customised little kitchens, digital swings and loads of fancy toys - the uber-kid clearly does not believe in settling for the mundane. Ajay Arora, sales manager of the ‘Mom & Me’ store in Jalandhar, says, “With changing times, the demand of parents for their kids is changing and they want the best quality and safest options for toys, swings and clothes for their children and we have just the right stuff for them.” The safety and comfort of infants is also high on priority, as the store has myriad products in feeding bottles, cups, plates and other feeding material for infants on offer. Speaking about the season, he says bouncers, rockers, baby gyms and learning toys are much in demand this summer. “Electric, remote-controlled ride-ons, dolls, learning toys etc (for 4 to nine-year-olds) are much in demand this season. For school-going kids, BTS (the back to school) collection which offers baby bags, pencil boxes, bottles etc in myriad avatars, are a hit,” he said. Among the city-based malls, the Chunmun Mall is one of the preferred stops for parents shopping for goodies for their children. From elaborate Barbie sets, home-making sets and kid-sized kitchens and dressers for the little girls, the mall has racer-boys’ toys, sportsperson piggy banks and a variety of games on offer for boys. Notably, swinging, mattressed, remote-controlled and digital-toy fitted cots, cribs and swings and rockers are also available in varied avtars in all the kid stores.
Kids wear
Like toys and kids’ furniture, a large variety is also available in kids’ wear. Mahendra, manager, Chunmun Mall, says, “One-piece suits and dresses both in casual and formal wear are much in demand at the store.” Jatin Bedi, business head of the Kapsons’ outlet, says, “While until last season, skirts were in, this season shorts are much in demand for both boys and girls. Barring that parents are also going in for vibrant trousers with uppers. While girls go in for yellows and pinks, boys like it earthy.” Sarthak Arora, owner, Ram Garments, said, “It is a neon season for children wear this year. While one-piece dresses are in vogue as far as formals are concerned, for casual wear, children prefer neon colours - especially orange and green tones. Jumpsuits and coloured trousers are also in this season.” While mostly 3,000 to 5,000 is the upper range for parents to spend on their kids, there are some who are willing to spend as high as 10,000 to 15,000 for furniture alone. |
