Protests at KU against ‘rapist’ dervish
Srinagar, May 29 Students comprising boys and girls from various departments of the varsity took out a protest rally from Allama Iqbal Library to Rumi Gate raising slogans against the “sins” committed by the accused dervish. Students carrying placards and banners lambasted the tactics adopted by the accused, especially his misinterpretation of Islam and religious scriptures to sexually exploit the girls who studied at his seminary. “Since this so-called peer has misused religion for his own selfish reasons, he must be punished according to religious principles. He should be publicly humiliated and stoned. He has made the lives of many girls hell and he should not be spared,” Imaad Shafi, a universtiy student said. The varsity students urged the police authorities to act swift and expose all the links the dervish had, which may even involve bureaucrats and ministers. “There are rumours doing rounds that Gulzar was building a bigger school with a budget of several crores. Where did the funding come from? All the missing links in this case should be carefully examined and the police as well as judiciary should not spare anyone,” Maarosha, a home science student said. Farhana Jan, a law student, said the protests should be carried out in a careful manner or the government might shift the accused dervish to another state for a fair trail. “Massive protests are being held against this so-called dervish. We should not give authorities a chance to shift him to some jail outside the state as was done in the sex scandal case which happened few years ago,” Farhana Jan added. The case

Leopard stoned to death in Baramulla
Srinagar, May 29 “Postmortem of the leopard was conducted
by some veterinarians here and the cerebral shock is said to be the cause of its death,” Wildlife Warden (North) Abdul Rouf Zargar said. “After the leopard was forced to take refuge in the pipe in the village, he was hit with stones and sticks which led to his death,” Zargar added. Zargar said they had already registered a police case in this regard. "We have lodged a complaint at the police station concerned against the unidentified villagers involved in the killing of the animal. “The police has registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the culprits," said the Wildlife Warden. Reports said the villagers had also informed the wildlife officials after the leopard was spotted in the village. “But before they could reach the spot, the leopard was stoned to death,” official said, adding that the locals apparently thought the leopard was a man-eater. It is not for the first time that a leopard has been stoned to death in
the Valley. The incidents of man-animal conflict reveal an upward trend and the J&K government is planning to introduce new methodology to tackle the problem. |

‘Media shielded Shopian tragedy perpetrators’
Shopian, May 29 Commemorating the fourth death anniversary of the two, the participants blamed the Indian state for using rape as a repressive tool in Kashmir while ensuring impunity for the perpetrators of the crime. The participants said that four years after the Shopian tragedy, the government agencies have been defaming the victims' families while
the culprits were still roaming free. "There are a lot of young men who are up in arms against the oppressive rule of the Indian state in Kashmir," said Asiya Andrabi, chairperson of the Dukhtaran-e-Millat (daughters of the nation), a part of the separatist amalgam All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC). "The Indian state will never be successful in their nefarious designs and the fight for freedom will go on," Andrabi said. Senior journalist and noted political commentator Ved Bhasin said the Indian state had been guilty of seeing Kashmir through a security prism and not as an integral part. "If Kashmir is an integral part of the union of India why do not the injustices done in the Valley move the people at the helm of affairs," Bhasin said. "The injustices done in Kashmir are a blot on the Indian Democracy," the noted journalist added. "The Indian media too has been found guilty of shielding the perpetrators," Bhasin said. The chairperson of the Parents of Disappeared People (APDP), Parveena Ahangar, appealed to the civil societies of the country to take cognisance of the injustices meted out to people in Kashmir. The function was organised by the Majlis-e-Mashavrat Shopian and was attended by various civil society members, including the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Societies (JKCCS). Among those present on the occasion were noted human rights activist Parvez Imroz and the president of the Majlis-e-Mashavrat, Muhammad Shafi Khan, along with many other luminaries from different walks
