More youth trying luck in Rohtak
Rohtak, May 28 "Almost 75 per cent of the total 275 candidates contesting the poll for 20 wards in the city are not above 40 years. This indicates that the youth are interested to take command of the wards in these elections’’, claimed an official of the local administration. "I have decided to contest from Ward number-9 as an independent candidate to serve and not to play politics, which had shown its ugly face", claimed Manoj Duhan (31), Sector-14, here. He is a practising lawyer. He said though he had no political background, he decided to contest the poll due to motivation from the local residents who wanted to change the scenario prevailing at the local level. Surender Saini (29), another young candidate from Ward number- 5, claimed that the fact that the youth could put in more efforts and energy in their duty had made him contest the elections. Owner of a shop, he said, he was a postgraduate and wanted to serve the locals in a better manner. He claimed that he wanted to be a part of change that people wanted as they were fed up with false promises and lack of development in this ward having a large population. While the INLD has fielded 20 women, the BJP has allotted ticket to 13 women. At least five wards have been reserved for SC and BC candidates. |

Soaring mercury hits campaigning in Hisar
Hisar, May 28 Though the maximum temperature fell slightly to 43.8 degrees Celsius here today, the candidates have been fighting a scorching heat ever since they have begun their campaign. Soaring temperature has hit canvassing in Hisar as candidates have to choose early morning or evening hours to meet their voters. “We feel embarrassed for when we press the door bell of a house and the people, who come out to open the door, tell us that they were sleeping,” said a woman contestant. “Due to the sizzling heat, people prefer to remain indoors and take rest with air-conditioners or air-coolers on,” she added. The husband of another woman contestant said they started their campaign quite early in the morning as the weather is fine that time and people come out of their beds early in summer. He said hectic electioneering began again in the evening, though meeting people on their shops and workplaces continued throughout the day. Since the post of Mayor in the Hisar Municipal Corporation is reserved for a woman, several known local leaders and social activists have fielded their wives, mothers or other woman members of their families. Areas from the assembly segments of three Congress MLAs - Savitri Jindal, Sampat Singh and Ram Niwas Ghorela - are located in the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation. However, none of these MLAs are taking active part in the poll.HJC supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi, whose parliamentary constituency includes the area under the Hisar Municipal Corporation, has also been keeping a distance from this election. On the contrary, INLD leaders, including Ellenabad MLA Abhey Singh Chautala and his nephew Dushyant Chautala, are taking an active part in campaign as the party has fielded its candidates on all 20 wards. Similarly, BJP leaders Ram Bilas Sharma, Captain Abhimanyu, former minister Ganeshi Lal, Kamal Gupta and several others are also campaigning hard for the corporation poll. |

Officials told to keep check on liquor
Ambala, May 28 During a meeting with senior officials of the district, the SEC asked them to make sure that there was no violation of the model code of conduct by any of the candidates. He said proper records of the expenditure being borne by the candidates on their elections campaigns should be maintained and it must be assured that the candidates also submit their expenditure details with the authorities within 30 days of the elections. He said if discrepancies were found in the expenditure details submitted by the candidates, they could be barred from contesting any elections for a period of six years. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Rajbir Deswal said at least 1,100 police personnel would be deployed at the polling booths and strategic places to ensure smooth conduct of the elections. |

State BJP chief woos voters in Karnal
Karnal, May 28
Lambasting the Congress, the BJP chief said people were fed up with corruption and anarchy prevailing in the state and asked the voters to signal the change by electing BJP members and also set the trend for coming Lok Sabha and Assembly poll. The defeat of the Congress in all seven Municipal Corporations would be a befitting reply to the ruling party , he said. He said the Congress' claim that it was not fighting the elections was untenable as many candidates in Ambala, Rohtak and other corporations had published posters and other publicity material in the name of the Congress to seek votes. |

Distribution of iron tablets suspended
Chandigarh, May 28 Even as a Government of India team led by the programme manager of the WIFS held a meeting with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) officials to get into the causes of the incidence of illness, NRHM Project Director Rakesh Gupta said the WIFS programme has been suspended for the time being. “We are giving it a one-month break to establish the reasons behind children falling ill, though the symptoms of nausea and stomach ache are known side-effects of iron tablets,” he said. The programme taking off on a negative note is also a cause of concern for the NRHM since the side-effects of the medicine have resulted in reluctance and doubts on the part of the children and parents to embrace the programme. Experts maintain that though the dosage of 100 milligram of iron and 500 microgram of folic acid on a weekly basis is the only efficacious way to deal with anaemia, the side-effects could be a consequence of reaction to the chemically inactive substance in the medicine. Sources said the colouring agent and preservatives in the medicine as also the temperature at which it is transported could be to blame if the number of children falling ill is large. “The only way to check that is to send a new batch of medicine to that area and administer it the following week to the same children. While the common side-effects are even mentioned on the sachet of the tablets, how the medicine is administered is also of crucial importance,” a senior doctor said. The NRHM officials maintain that the timing of administering the medicine is important. “We have already trained the staff to administer the medicine to the children only half-an-hour after a meal and not to administer it to children who are unwell for any reason. There could be instances where these instructions have been taken casually,” sources said. The medicine supplied by an Uttaranchal firm has been procured a United Nations procurement agency. Sources said the NRHM will re-launch the programme though the officials are satisfied that the incidence of side-effects of one per cent is way below the expected number of five per cent. Also, a sensitisation programme to educate the children and their parents about the side-effects may be undertaken before resuming the administration of the tablets. |
HCS officer held for issuing fake driving licences
Hisar, May 28 The officer was taken into custody from the Mini Secretariat here and taken to Nuh for investigation. Sangwan was presently posted as the City Magistrate in Hisar with the additional charge of Secretary, Justice TP Garg (retd), who is a one-man commission in the Haund Chhillar incident. According to sources, Sangwan is alleged to have committed large-scale irregularities in issuing driving licences and road permits to drivers of commercial vehicles and registration certificates of commercial vehicles. The sources said after the receipt of complaints in this regard, Hooda had entrusted a probe to his flying squad. After the probe, the squad had registered a case against Sangwan and some others. The sources said the probe revealed that heavy fines were recovered from commercial vehicles for violations of traffic rules and fake challans were issued to them in lieu of the money received from them. The money so collected went to personal pockets of some officials rather than going to the state exchequer. The sources added that other officials are likely to get caught as the investigations in the case progressed. |

Census 2011 Pradeep Sharma/TNS
Chandigarh, May 28 The Opposition’s claims of less job opportunities seem to have been validated by the Census-2011 data, which revealed that the percentage share of total workers to the total population has come down from 39.6 per cent in 2001 to 35.2 per cent registering a decadal decline of 4.4 per cent. In fact, what should ring alarm bells for the Hooda government in the pre-election year is the fact that workers’ population is even less than the all-India figure of 39.8 per cent (up from 39.1 per cent in 2001). In the 10 years, since 2001 census, when Haryana occupied 18th slot in the country, the state has now been pushed to the 29th position, the Census-2011 data released today showed. In a development that has direct bearing on women empowerment in Haryana, there has been nearly 10 per cent drop in the women workers from 27.2 per cent in 2001 to 17.8 per cent in 2011. In the same period, the figure for India has almost been same (25.5 per cent in 2011 as against 25.6 per cent in 2001). Haryana slipped to 18th spot in 2011 Census from 28th during the 2001 Census. The data showed Mewat registered a maximum decline of 12 per cent (from 38.66 per cent in 2001 to 26.6 per cent in 2011) followed by Palwal at 11 per cent (from 40.65 per cent to 29.7 per cent) and Jhajjar at 10 per cent (from 44.17 per cent to 34.1 per cent). Except Ambala district, all other districts registered a decline in the percentage of workers. As far as female workers were concerned, Bhiwani topped the list with 25 per cent workforce followed by Hisar and Jind (25 per cent each) and Mahendragarh (24.3 per cent). Yamunanagar was at the bottom of the table with just 8.3 per cent female workers. Ambala with 9.8 per cent and Faridabad with 12.1 per cent followed Yamunanagar. Census-2011

Chances of BJP-HJC tieup breakdown remote
Chandigarh, May 28 Among the BJP leaders who met Chautala were BJP President Rajnath Singh, former president Murli Manohar Joshi and Jagdish Mukhi, who was recently appointed in charge of the Haryana BJP. The hurry with which Mukhi called upon Chautala immediately after his appointment as the Haryana BJP in charge dismayed state party leaders and workers. Mukhi met Chautala even before he met various senior leaders of his party in the state. It is no secret that when Mukhi had contested for the Delhi Assembly, the Chautalas had actively campaigned for him in the national Capital. Given this background, many state leaders felt that the new in charge of their party would work wholeheartedly for an alliance with the INLD. However, it was left to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, who was instrumental in forging the BJP-HJC alliance, to put at rest the speculation about the alliance. Before she made a categorical statement at a public rally within days of Mukhi's meeting with Chautala, Sushma reportedly gave a dressing down to the new Haryana BJP in charge . Sushma declared that while for the first half of the term, Kuldeep Bishnoi would be the Chief Minister if the alliance came to power, it would be Ram Bilas Sharma of the BJP who would lead the state in the second half . Since Sushma had been closely associated with Haryana, her views about the state are taken very seriously by other senior leaders. Sources say Sushma is aware of the strong sentiments of state leaders against the Chautalas, who had left no opportunity to harass them when they were in power in the state. Many state leaders say the Chautalas had not treated them in the manner a good alliance partner should have treated them. Sushma knows that it would be very difficult for Central leaders to persuade those in the state to agree to go with the Chautalas. The INLD leadership is also aware that the courtesy calls by certain BJP leaders cannot lead to an alliance between the two parties. It feels that the contradictory indications by various BJP leaders may be linked to the fight for prime ministership in the saffron party. |
