Distribution of iron pills resumes in Ratia
Tribune News Service

Fatehabad, May 23
The health authorities today distributed iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets among schoolchildren in 39 villages of Ratia block in Fatehabad, where the programme had been kept on hold due to incidents of children taking ill after consuming the tablets in some villages.

After a report “Iron pill distribution on hold in Ratia” was published in The Tribune today, Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner Dr Saket Kumar reached Bhunderwas village and ensured distribution of pills in his own presence.

Dr Kumar, who is a paediatrician by education, counselled the students and their guardians on the importance of giving IFA pills to children.

He also tried to convince them that the incidents of students falling ill were isolated and could be prevented by taking simple precautions, like not having the pills on empty stomach. The Deputy Commissioner took mid-day meal with the schoolchildren and also consumed an IFA pill before these were distributed among the children.

The health authorities were facing resistance from parents in Bhunderwas, Burj and some other villages after students had taken ill in these villages last week.

The health authorities were able to distribute the pills in other schools of Ratia too.“We have distributed the second dose of IFA pills to 7,137 children in 39 villages of Ratia block today,” said Dr VK Jain, Senior Medical Officer at Community Health Centre, Ratia.

Meanwhile, 12 children from Government Senior Secondary School at Nadori in Fatehabad were taken ill after they consumed iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets.

IFA tablets were distributed among 365 children today.

Programme to correct iron deficiency in teens faces roadblocks

Sirsa/Fatehabad, May 24
Lack of proper training to the field staff responsible for the implementation, inappropriate timings selected for the drive and lack of awareness among villagers are some of the reasons why the health authorities are facing roadblocks in the implementation of their weekly iron and folic acid (WIFS) programme to correct iron deficiency in adolescents.

Incidents of students falling ill after consuming these tablets are on the rise in the state. Though the incidents are not very high considering the 16.45 lakh children being targeted in the drive, the isolated incidents have made children scared of taking these pills.

A number of villages that The Tribune visited to find out the reasons behind recurring incidents of children falling ill after consuming the IFA tablets, it was found that teachers and the field staff of the Health Department hardly had any idea about the WIFS programme and as to how it could help combat anaemia, one of the biggest enemies of growth in children.

“The biggest problem with all government programmes is that they are started without proper planning and without imparting proper training to those who are responsible for their implementation. “Over 60 girls had taken ill after consuming a Vitamin A solution in Kalanwali in Sirsa in August 2010. It was found that a teacher, who was asked to give 2 ml liquid to each of the girls, handed over the bottle to the first girl and asked the girls to go on passing it to the next after taking a (unmeasured) sip,” said Dr Ved Beniwal, state patron of the Indian Medical Association.

Dr Rakesh Gupta, Mission Director of the NRHM, however, said proper training was being provided to the field staff. He also refuted the allegations that the programme was ill-timed and said since the drive was to continue for six months, it was bound to include summers in it.

CNG crisis fuels fares in Gurgaon
Sumedha Sharma/TNS

Gurgaon, May 24
The millennium city’s poor public transport has taken a turn for the worse with the city running out of CNG. All thanks to the ongoing closure of five CNG stations in the city, auto-rickshaws have either come to a standstill or have doubled the rates.

The worst-affected are the thousands of Metro commuters who use these autos on a daily basis. They are either struggling for hours to get a ride or shelling out more than double the price, as these autos are now running on petrol or are retrieving the fine that they pay to ‘smuggle’ gas from Delhi’s Kapasehra and Mahipalpur areas.

Gurgaon has five CNG filling stations, located in sectors 22, 29, 44, 53 and one in old city. Reportedly, the CNG distributing agency, Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), has stopped the supply to these filling stations because of the non-payment of dues. These gas stations have to pay Rs 4 crore to IGL. This has forced the auto drivers to either stop plying or sneak into Delhi to get gas from Kapasheda and Mahipalpur.

"Extra police has been deployed on the Kapsehra border to stop the autos from Haryana from entering. When caught, we have to pay a hefty fine. Some claim to bribe the policemen to enter but even that does not help, as the queues at these filling stations are so long,” said Pramod Kumar, a representative of the local auto drivers. "We have 50 autos. All of them are forced to run on petrol at the moment, which costs Rs 35 more than CNG. We cannot help but raise the prices. The government is to be blamed for this," Vineet Goel, CEO of Blue Auto, said. However, GAIL, which has been blamed, has turned the tables in a statement issued today.

HC allows Anjolie Menon's plea against land acquisition
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 24
Just about a year after Padma Shri Anjolie Ela Menon drew a grim picture of ecological degradation in Gurgaon, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed her plea against the proposed acquisition of her land. She had claimed that her land was being acquired to facilitate a housing project in the name of laying a road.

In a petition, she had earlier stated that the land was being acquired for the ostensible public purpose of building a 60-metre sector road east of the Ghatta bundh. But the true purpose of the proposed sector road was evident from the ongoing construction and advertisement for sale of a large private luxury housing project. The proposed sector road has no apparent purpose other than to serve as a secondary access for the luxury project.

Raising ecological concerns, the petitioner had asserted: “The sector road will pass through and develop an area adjacent to the ecologically sensitive Aravali region, where a forest has been cut and a seasonal water reservoir exists”.

The petitioner also claimed that appropriate environmental clearances from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and other clearances were yet to be obtained.
