Roads serve as parking lots for pvt hospitals in the city
Bathinda, May 19 Apart from the Civil Hospital, the Max Hospital, Dr Mela Ram Hospital and the Adesh Hospital, no other hospital or clinic has adequate parking facility. Resultantly, the roads outside the premises of these hospitals and clinics have turned into parking lots. When the owners of the hospitals were asked about it, none of them was ready to speak on the issue. As per the rules of the Building By-laws 2004, medical facilities should have dedicated private parking lots. If the hospitals are connected with public parking, the hospital authorities have to pave an alley leading to the parking. Interestingly, some of the medical facilities working from their own buildings have shown parking space in the civil drawings submitted to the MCB but physically, such spaces are absent. Many hospitals or clinics are not registered as a medical facility with the MCB and most of them are being run from buildings in residential areas or some commercial building other than hospital or clinic. Hospitals and clinics being run from rented accommodations shift the onus of maintaining a parking space to the owner of the building. With more and more people becoming health conscious, a number of private clinics, speciality, super-speciality and multi-speciality hospitals are coming up in the city. "In such a scenario, the need to address parking woes at early stage arises. The government should start sensitising owners of these medical set-ups to the need for dedicated parking lots. There is a need to maintain separate parking for ambulances and adequate space for vehicles of staff members as well," said Tarsem Kumar, a resident of Veer Colony. Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta agreed that the city hospitals indeed did not have adequate parking arrangements. "By the beginning of June, we will conduct a survey to identify all such hospitals and issue them notices. Our emphasis will be on asking them to create enough parking lots so that patients as well as commuters are not put to risk," he added. Fact file

Body of 13-yr-old fished out of GNDTP lake
Bathinda, May 19 Volunteers of the Noujawan Welfare Society found the body floating in the lake this morning, fished it out and took it to the Civil Hospital here for a post-mortem examination. In the meantime, the police checked with the police stations around the district whether any complaint of a missing teenager was lodged with them. The Sangat police station reported that a family of Gehri Buttar village had lodged a complaint about a 13-year-old boy who went missing on May 16. The SHO of the Thermal police station, Kabal Singh, said a couple from Sangat came to the Civil Hospital and identified the body of their son Arashdeep Singh. "The family has ruled out any foul play. They said that Arashdeep was mentally unstable and has been missing from home since May 16," said Kabal Singh. It is being believed that Arashdeep might have tried to take a dip in the thermal lake to escape the searing heat and lost balance. — TNS Fact file

Circus artistes to take a final bow in city today
Bathinda, May 19 With as many as 60-70 performers, more than 50 animals and 20 birds, the Great Bombay Circus, which had come to Bathinda after more than 50 years, failed to evoke a great response in the city. While speaking to Bathinda Tribune, Dilipnath Nair, the owner of the circus, attributed the empty shows to the heat, harvesting season and Chinese infiltration on India's soil. "I chose to come and camp in Bathinda since the city has an Army Cantonment. I was hoping that even if the Army personnel were given tickets at discounted prices, it would help me break even. We proposed but God disposed. The Army was preoccupied with the Chinese infiltration and they didn't come to watch the shows," he said. The harvesting season also remained one of the causes for the lukewarm response that the circus received. "Harvesting season kept more than half the population of the city and its neighbouring areas busy. Even the children were engaged in agricultural activities and didn't come to watch the shows," Dilipnath added. The increasingly hot and humid weather also took a toll on the business. "We've learnt our lessons the hard way. Although the weekend shows had fairly good occupancy, due to the extremely hot weather conditions, most of the daytime shows on weekdays got a lukewarm response. The stay of the circus in Bathinda was also marred by the inspection review submitted by the officials of the forest department. The officials, who had visited the circus to check how the animals and birds were being treated and kept by the circus management, pointed out a few irregularities. The owner, however, denied that any rules were being violated. "A section of the media chose not to take my view and printed wrong details of the inspection done by the forest and zoo officials. There was some mistake in the calculations that they made which pointed to irregularities. They later accepted their mistake," said the owner. "I have conducted shows in metropolitan cities and had there been a violation of any rule, I would not have been able to get away with it. We take utmost care when it comes to handling animals and birds," he added. After Kaithal, the circus may move to Bhiwani, Jaipur and Delhi to entertain people there. |
