Sector 32 residents wake up to a shocker
Chandigarh, May 19
A resident shows the defaced number plate of his car at Sector 32, Chandigarh, on Sunday. Residents of Sector 32 woke up to lewd graffiti that was spray-painted outside their houses and number plates of cars smudged with black paint. The miscreants painted the walls of houses and car windowpanes with vulgar words on them. The miscreants targeted the vehicles parked outside the houses from House Number 3,701 to 3,730 and from House Number 3,600 onwards in the area.

Girl hit by speeding car, dies
Chandigarh, May 19 
An 8-year-old unidentified girl died after being hit by a speeding luxury car near Himachal Bhawan, Sector 28, late this evening. A resident of Sector 18, Chirag Sachdeva (24), who was driving the Audi car, rushed the girl to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where she was declared brought dead. 

Burning midnight oil to pursue law at 59
Chandigarh, May 19
Age is not a deterrent for 59-year-old Govind Khanna, who toiled hard to pursue a degree in law. His efforts bore fruits and he was the oldest yet enthusiastic student to be conferred a degree during the Panjab University convocation here today.

Women turn out in large numbers in Mohali

Mohali, May 19
Women turned out in large numbers to cast their vote during the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Mohali district today. Long queues of women voters could be seen at several polling booths in different villages including Sohana, Kumbhra, Landran and Balongi.

Fifteen years after its construction started, the community centre building in the residential area of the PGI still awaits completion. While MPs allocated funds for the completion of the building thrice over these years, the engineering wing has failed to complete the work.

Public parks in Sector 10, Panchkula, have been locked following a tussle among the local residents over various issues, including not allowing children to play sports. Because of this, senior citizens and handicapped persons are the biggest sufferers.

Chandigarh-based International Space Society (ISS) has collaborated with the National Space Society (NSS), a US-based non-profit advocate for space economic programme, in creating international support and collaboration for the research and development of clean energy from space-based solar power.

Sekhri group emerges winner

Degrees conferred on law students at PU
Chandigarh, May 19
Around 500 students and 22 gold medallists from PU’s law department, University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) and law institutes at regional centres in Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Muktsar were conferred degrees at the first convocation of the Faculty of Laws at Panjab University.

Law dept head skips convocation

The delay in getting approval for the convocation from the Panjab University and refusal of the varsity to give financial assistance for function kept the law department chairperson Nishtha Jaswal away from the first convocation of the Faculty of Laws.

St Stephen’s-45 students excel in Class X exam 
Chandigarh, May 19 As many as 43 students of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, secured above 90 per cent in the ICSE results declared on Friday.

Zila Parishad polls in fatehgarh sahib
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 19
Above 70% polling was reported for panchyat and zila parishad elections in the district. Notably, the elections concluded peacefully as no untoward incident was reported from any part of the district. Arun Sekhri, the Deputy Commissioner-cum -District Returning Officer said the voters voted for 10 Zila parishad seats, for which there were 22 candidates in fray, whereas there were 76 seats for five panchyat samitis and there were 164 candidates in fray for them.

Blood Bank (Department of Transfusion Medicine), Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, will celebrate 'World Blood Donor Day' in which voluntary blood donors, who not only donate their precious blood to save the dying patients but also motivate others for blood donation, will be honoured.

HMT employees not paid three months’ salaries
Kalka, May 19
A great resentment prevails among the hundreds of employees of Hindustan Machine Tools , as they have not been paid their salaries for the last three months . They alleged that the higher authorities of Heavy Industries and Public Sector of HMT had been adopting partial attitude towards machine tools. Notably the central government had provided a special revival package of Rs.10830 crores to tractor unit of HMT recently, for the survival of HMT tractor unit.

Boys outshine girls in PSEB results
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 19
Reversing the trend in Punjab School Education Board Senior Secondary results, the boys have out shown the girls in Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib. Three boys from Ashoka Senior Secondary School Boys, Sirhind, have secured positions in the merit list, where as two students missed the merit list by one per cent marks. The boys who won laurels for the school are Randeep Singh 92.2 per cent, Jagjeet Singh 92 per cent and Bhavnish Bias 92 per cent. Whereas the other two students secured 89 per cent marks.

Missing groom’s body found
Chandigarh, May 19
Victim’s relatives wait outside the mortuary at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16, Chandigarh, on Sunday. The decomposed body of a 30-year-old software engineer, who had gone missing on May 10, was recovered from a canal near Tangori yesterday, after a diver noticed the body floating in the canal.

24-year-old youth ends life
Chandigarh, May 19
A 24-year-old newly married youth committed suicide after hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his Sector 20 residence last night. The deceased’s family members said they found a handwritten suicide note, in which the victim, Pardeep Kumar, had blamed his wife and in-laws for the suicide. The police is yet to examine it.

Snatchers target three city residents within 24 hours
Chandigarh, May 19
Unidentified miscreants targeted three pedestrians and sped away with their belongings within 24 hours in different parts of the city. In the latest incident, Pinki, a resident of Burail village, said two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched her handbag in Sector 22 this morning. The handbag contained a mobile phone, artificial jewellery and Rs 10,000.

Stadium XI rout Warriors Club

In an ongoing match of the UT Cricket T20 League Championship, the Stadium-XI team defeated Warriors Club by 154 runs. The match was played at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here today.

Golf camp from June 3
Panchkula, May 19
The Panchkula Golf Club will organise a “kids and moms summer golf coaching camp” from June 3 to June 11 here. The eight-day long coaching camp will be open to children in the age-group of 5 to 15 years.

FCI, HDFC Bank log wins in CII cricket cup

The cricket team of Food Corporation of India (FCI) defeated Bharti Airtel while HDFC Bank defeated Quantum Solution in the ongoing CII Corporate Cricket Cup.

New competitive format for junior-level cricket proposed
Chandigarh, May 19
In order to make the junior-level cricket more competitive, Punjab Cricket Association's honorary secretary, MP Pandove proposed a more meaningful and competitive format for the Punjab inter-district matches. It was proposed during the executive committee meeting of the of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA).

12-year-old city chess prodigy brings laurels

A 12-year-old local chess star, Tarini Goyal, has achieved new heights by bagging the “Best Woman Player” award in two consecutive international open rating tournaments held in New Delhi and Ahmedabad earlier this month.
