Poll violence in Punjab claims life

Adampur (Bathinda), May 16
One person was killed when assailants, allegedly owing allegiance to the SAD, opened fire at a Congress-PPP rally here today. More than 60 rounds were fired from a carbine, a pistol and a .12 bore gun.

Rajwinder Singh, son of Congress candidate Malkiat Singh, who is contesting the zila parishad election from Bhai Rupa zone, was wounded in the attack. He was admitted to DMCH, Ludhiana. His condition is critical.

Congress Malwa zone in charge Gurpreet Kangar blamed Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka for the attack. The latter, denied the charge. Congress leader Sunil Jakhar called it “political terrorism”. Pradesh Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa and former CM Amarinder Singh have demanded President’s rule in the state.

Sukjinder Raj Singh, who lost the Assembly poll to Bikram Majithia, said armed Akali workers were threatening Congress workers and he feared for his life.
