New Delhi, May 9
As nearly 1,000 residents, including PG students of Safdarjung Hospital (SH), refrained from reporting to duties since last night after talks with the hospital authorities failed over their demands, the hospital services were badly hit.

All through the day, while patients’ services suffered, following two rounds of negotiation with the Union Health Ministry and the hospital authorities, the doctors and students called off their strike in the evening as of now after an assurance that their grievances related to inadequate accommodation, untimely salaries, lack of proper security on the hospital premises, etc would be addressed.

It was till 4 pm that the stand-off continued with no concrete assurances coming from the authorities and the Union Ministry of Health Joint Secretary Shakuntala Gamlin while patients had a tough time, with residents withdrawing the elective and OPD services.

“Even the basic amenities like drinking water are not available in the wards. We have given several memorandums but till date nothing has happened,” stated senior resident of ENT department Dr Saurabh Jain.

Another senior resident said salaries are not paid on time. The salaries of interns have been held back for four months while the security on the campus is a big issue.

“Doctors on call report on odd hours for emergency and have to face problems, especially female residents who have on several instances complained of harassment. While there are 400 guards, only 150 are posted at a given time on the premises. We have submitted all our demands and are hopeful that the government will take action. We will wait till Tuesday as another meeting is scheduled with the health secretary,” he said.

“We had two sittings and the issues of residents were discussed. It is a matter of concern for us and we have assured them that we’ll chalk out a plan within a month,” medical superintendent BD Athani said.

Learning English will now be as exciting as watching cricket. ‘English Strokes’, an initiative launched by the British Council today will now enable students to learn English through cricket.

English Strokes, an English learning website that brings together English and cricket is developed by the British Council in partnership with Sun Online Learning.

“To learn spoken English through English Strokes is not just knowing the vocabulary, adjective, noun and all those things. The student will start enjoying it because the medium of teaching language is cricket,” said Kris Srikkanth, former captain of Indian cricket team and director of Sun Online.

Cricket is chosen to teach English as cricket is religion in our country, said Srikkanth. “Cricket is the most exciting way to teach, learn and comprehend. The main language used on the cricket field is English. So we are trying to bring the same thing in English course. Even the villager will learn English this way,” he said, adding speaking English alone does not make you great, but that adds value to whatever you are.

Most of the Indian cricketers learnt English only after coming into the field of cricket. English is the main medium to interact in this sport. They rub shoulders with international cricketers and have to speak the language in team meetings, Srikkanth explained.

It is a very interesting website. You get six questions per over and you get runs for the correct answer.

The website offers an online English learning course, which is divided into three levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced level. Each level has ten units and each unit has again a range of activities.
