In the first case, the relatives of Jaspal Kaur (27) protested against the owner of the Mela Ram Hospital and his son, both doctors, accusing them of causing death due to medical negligence. On not getting a plausible answer from the doctors attending to the patient, the deceased's relatives started raising slogans against the doctor and damaged some window panes on the hospital premises.

Kotwali Station House Officer Jaspal Singh reached the spot and tried to pacify the irate relatives.

It is learnt that Jaspal Kaur, whose parents lived in the Jogi Nagar area, had delivered a baby girl on the night of April 16 at Dr Mela Ram Hospital through C-section. Her family members said that around the midnight, she complained of headache following which the nurses attending to her were informed.

The family members alleged that a nurse administered an injection to relieve the patient of headache and just 30 minutes later, a compounder administered another injection for the same problem.

Jaspal's uncle Sukhwinder Singh said after getting the shots, she did not move or respond at which the hospital staff was informed.

"However, the hospital staff told us that she was unconscious while in fact our patient was dead. She was referred to the Delhi Heart Hospital where doctors declared her dead," he said.

Irate over this, the deceased's relatives raised slogans and damaged the property of the hospital. Neither Dr Mela Ram nor his son was present at the hospital.

Speaking on their behalf, the president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bathinda, Dr Shiv Dutt Sharma, said the patient was epileptic.

"As soon as the baby was delivered, Jaspal Kaur started getting fits. She was an epileptic, the fact which her parents had accepted. The doctors were trying to control the seizures but could not. The patient was then put on ventilator but could not be saved," he said.

Terming the incident an unfortunate, Dr Sharma said it was wrong on the part of the deceased patient's kin to indulge in damaging the property of the hospital as the doctor did his best and saved the baby.

SHO Jaspal Singh said the deceased's husband and father have refused to lodge any complaint against the doctor.

"The body has been taken away. The deceased's relatives have apologised for the damage to the property of the hospital. No case has been registered in this connection," he added.

Meanwhile, people raised slogans against a kidney hospital on the Power House Road alleging that the health facility has overcharged a patient. The 75-year-old patient's attendants alleged that while earlier, the hospital had demanded charges at the rate of Rs 1,000 per day it raised a bill for Rs 2,000 per day. However, the matter was resolved later.

Skewed sex ratio casts its shadow on ‘kanjak puja’

Bathinda, April 18
The 'kanjak pujan' on 'Ashtami', an occasion of worshipping little girls on the eighth navratra, gave tough time to those who could not get enough number of girls below 10 years of age to be served 'prasad' today.

In the Jujhar Singh Nagar area, women were seen making a beeline to their neighborhood asking little girls' parents to send them for the ‘pujan’. “We face this problem every year. There was not just enough number of girls around to sit for the ‘puja’. As the pooja could not complete without the requisite nine girls, we then requested our maid servants to bring their children from slum areas,” said Archana, a resident of Jujhar Singh Nagar.

If Archana's predicament is an indicator, the situation reflects the poor sex-ratio the city has.

As per the 2001 Census, the number of girls in the age group of 0 to 6 years was mere 785 against 1000 males, which improved to 854 in the 2011 Census.

However, Dr Nidhi Gupta, who served 30 'kanjaks' today, said the issue was not of getting lesser 'kanjaks' as there were lesser female children. “These festivities have now been restricted to the lower or lower middle class families. Families belonging to the 'elite' class are not ready to send their daughters to someone's place for having food,” she said. — TNS
