Licence renewed, but fate still uncertain

Ludhiana Stock Exchange (LSE) got an extension for another year as its license was due to expire on April 27, but its fate is still uncertain with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) laying down two conditions for it to continue working as a stock exchange.

The fourth accused in the women thrashing case, who was on the run, surrendered today. The other three accused who were arrested yesterday were presented in a local court today. They were sent to four-day police remand.

Child charred to death

A one-and-a-half year old child of a labourer was charred to death when fire broke out in their shanty on the banks of Sutlej river near Mand Udhowal village. The child’s parents were out to work when the incident took place.

Rs 35.31 crore to be spent on rural water supply, sewerage projects
Ludhiana, April 18
Rs 35.31 crore will be spent on providing potable water to 104 villages and sewerage facility to another 10 villages during the current financial year.
Presiding over a meeting of the district water supply and sanitation committee, Zila Parishad chairman Manpreet Singh Ayali said the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Punjab, would execute the project as a part of Rs 1,280 crore financial assistance provided by World Bank to the state of Punjab.

110 patwaris go on mass leave

About 110 patwaris of Sub-Registrar (East and West) offices have gone on mass casual leave till April 23.
Perturbed over the daily allegations of bribery and excessive workload in the offices, the patwaris went on leave. They say that unless higher officials called their meeting and discussed their issues
in detail, they will be on leave.
Too many raids irk shopkeepers

Irked over the continuous joint raids by the Health Department and police, the Retail Chemists Federation met Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, and submitted a memorandum of their demands here today. The office bearers of Retail Chemists Federation alleged that a number of policemen, who often raided their shops, created panic among the chemists and their staff.
Three acres of standing wheat crop gutted near Jagraon

The wheat crop standing over three acres of agricultural land was destroyed when a major fire broke out in the fields of Kotumra village near Sidhwan Bet. Villagers said the crop in the fields of two farmers was destroyed in the fire.

In yet another case of bogus billing, the Excise and Taxation Department has slapped a fine of Rs 2 crore on a local firm.
The firm, Aashirwad Sales located in the Janakpuri area, was registered as a firm dealing
in plastic goods and cosmetics, but was carrying out transactions of iron scrap.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamaljit Singh Lamba today granted bail to Tehsildar-cum-Sub-Registrar Arvinder Singh in a case of corruption.
The Vigilance Bureau had conducted a raid on the office of the Sub-Registrar (West) situated on Hambran Road on April 5.
Three arrested in murder case

The police claims to have solved the case of blind murder of 40-year-old mason of Halwara village, whose body was found under the heap of garbage in dry drain near Buraj Littan, here on Wednesday. Three accused, including deceased's wife were arrested from various places today. The police has also recovered weapons and motorcycle (PB 10 DW 5122), used in the crime and a mobile phone belonging to the deceased.
Elderly woman robbed of earrings

Three unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched earrings of an elderly woman and fled away. The incident took place at Street Number 3 of Shastri Nagar, located on the College Road.
Gang of thieves busted, four held

The Jagraon police claimed to have busted an alleged robber's gang, after arresting four persons. According to police, this gang was active in Jagraon area for the last few months and has executed many robberies and theft incidents in the area.
Ludhiana police cracks whip on drug peddlers

The police arrested a youth who was carrying two kgs of opium here today. The accused, Sanjiv Kumar, is a resident of Sunet village. In another case, the police nabbed one Surinderpal Singh Goldy, a resident of Vishkarma Nagar, at Tajpur. Over 1,300 tablets and capsules were seized from his possession.
