Ensuring ownership right to slum dwellers top priority: Rajni Rawat
Submits nominations for post of Dehradun Mayor as BSP candidate
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 11
BSP candidate for the post of Dehradun Mayor Rajni Rawat filed her nomination papers at the DM’s office here today.

She was followed by an impressive procession, including eunuchs dancing at the beats of the dhol. The procession began from Doonga House and reached the DM office after passing through Esley Hall and Panchayti Mandir.

Talking to the media, Rajni Rawat said she had strong support of the people of the city. “I am not like those leaders who travel in swanky cars and live in plush homes. My organisation --- Daya Bhav--- has been working for the poor for the past 25 years. If I came to power, my top priority will be to ensure pucca houses and ownership right to slum dwellers,”she said.

Rajni said road-building projects of the Congress could not help the latter attract voters. “Voters understand that the roads in the city have been repaired when the civic body election are coming,” she said.

“People do not want high-profile overbridges but fulfilment of their basic needs such as electricity, roads, water etc. People of many localities are facing an acute water shortage. The government has done nothing to solve this problem,” she said.

Rajni said she would do her best to resolve the problems and complaints of people as and when they came to her. “After coming under the umbrella of the BSP, my position has further strengthened. I am confident of win,” she claimed.

She said certain people were of the view that she might get votes of people belonging to a particular caste and class after joining hands with the BSP. She termed such speculations baseless saying eunuchs belonged to all castes.

Akhtari Begum is BSP nominee for Roorkee Mayor's post
Party releases second list of candidates
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 11
The BSP today released its second list of candidates with regard to the civic polls. For the positions of Mayor for Roorkee in Haridwar (general), the party has fielded Akhtari Begum, Vimla Sagar for Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar (SC woman) and Seema Verma for Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar (OBC woman).

State president Megh Raj Singh said Akhtari Begum was fighting the election for the first time. But she has been active in social work for a long time. Her family members are BSP activists. Vimla Sagar is also an agile worker of BSP, who is quite well-known in her area.

Seema Verma, BSP activist, is a social worker, whereas her husband has been councillor thrice “in the past.

The party has also decided names of nine candidates for the position of chairperson of Nagar Palika. They are Rajesh Kumar Jatav as Chairman of Rishikesh Nagar Palika, Ganesh Prasad Tamta for Sri Nagar, Bhagwan

Singh Tamta for Pauri, Chander Pal for Sitarganj, Vikram Singh for Rudraprayag, Vinod Kumar Virdi for Vikasnagar, Rakesh Kumar Shambhu for Nainital, Ratan Pal Singh for Tehri and Anisha Begum for Khatima.

Similarly, six candidates have also been finalised for the position of chairperson of nagar panchayat. These are Savitri Shah for Badkot, Anju Devi for Pokhri, Devender Rawat for Gopeshwar, Beena from Nand Prayag, Rekha Kanojia from Doiwala and Manjit Kaur from Harbertpur.

Jaraware said the party was finding it very difficult to finalise the names of the candidates, owing to the discrepancies in the voters' list. ''Quite surprisingly, many of our candidates whom we wanted to field in the civic election did not have their names in the voters' list.''

He said they could not do much as the list was released very late. More than that, the list regarding reservation on seats was also delayed. Just two days after the reservation list, the election was declared. This did not leave any time for the party to work upon these shortcomings.

Uniyal, Mall among five file papers for MC president’s post
Former Mussoorie BJP chief to contest as Independent
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, April 11
Present Municipal Council president OP Uniyal and Congress candidate Manmohan Singh Mall were among the five candidates who filed their nomination papers for the post of president amid beating of drums in Mussoorie today.

Three candidates have already filed their nominations for the post, bringing the tally to eight till now. Around 53 candidates also filed their papers from their respective wards along with the candidates for the president’s post.

The exercise started around 10 am with ward members accompanied by their supporters amid beating of drums started arriving at the centre to file their nominations. The whole area wore a festive look with the supporters of the candidates dancing in joy and raising slogans.

Anita Saxena, a former president of the local BJP unit, who was enraged at not allotted the party ticket, was the first to file her nomination paper for the post of MC president as an Independent candidate today. She said she had been a disciplined worker of the BJP for several years but her claim for the ticket was not considered. This forced her to contest the election as an Independent candidate. The sitting MC president, OP Uniyal, was next to arrive to file his nomination. He had not filled the prescribed form, thus resulting in delay. BJP workers assisted him in filing the required papers which were submitted after an hour.

Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi, who until now was supporting another BJP leader for the post of president, also accompanied Uniyal to the centre in a show of unity in the party. Joshi said after Uniyal was given the ticket the party workers had pulled up their socks to ensure his victory in the MC election once again. He added there was no infighting in the party.

Uniyal later speaking to mediapersons said he was confident about his victory as he had carried out several development works in the town.

The Congress candidate for the president’s post, Manmohan Singh Mall, who is contesting for the third time, also filed his nomination along with other ward members from the party around 3 pm. A former MLA from Mussoorie, Jot Singh Gunsola, and Satish Dhaundiyal, one of the ticket aspirants, accompanied him.

Mall, while speaking to mediapersons later, said he would win the election with a convincing margin. He added his main issues would be corruption by some ward members and Uniyal in the council during the past five years and halted development works. He said if elected he would focus on creating more parking space and building a housing colony for the poor.

Billoo Balmiki and Manmohan Singh Jaiswal were the others who filed their nomination papers for the post of president as Independent candidates.

As many as 53 candidates filed their nominations for the posts of ward member. Their supporters were seen dancing and singing with joy while on their way to the centre to file nominations.

Despite Birender's order, many Cong leaders' kin get ticket
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 11
The statement by Birender Singh, Congress general secretary and in-charge of the Uttarakhand party affairs, that no relative of any party leader would be given ticket in the civic poll has created a piquant situation for the party.

Interestingly, the statement by the senior leader did not match with the ground realities. Already, the party has announced the candidature of Vinay Saraswat, a brother of senior Congress leader Vijay Saraswat from Rishikesh.

Sumit Hridayesh, son of senior Cabinet Minister Indira Haridyesh, is a contender for the Haldwani mayoral seat while a close relative of Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal is also in the race for the same seat.

Similarly, a close relative of Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Singh Mahra is also in the race for party nomination from Kumaon.

The statement has evoked strong response from party workers as many of them said Saket Bahuguna, son of Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, was given ticket for theTehri Parliamentary byelection in October 2012, Anand Rawat, son of Union Minister Harish Rawat, is the president of the Uttarakhand Youth Congress. Sumit Hriydesh, son of Indira Hariydesh, is the Chairman of the Mandi Parishad, Haldwani, while Sanjeev Arya, son of Uttarakhand chief Yashpal Arya, has been made a Director of the Uttarakhand Cooperative Bank.
