Ultra-modern CSD canteen eludes ex-servicemen
Nawanshahr, March 31 Col. Jernail Singh, president, Ex- servicemen Welfare Association, laments that Nawanshahr is the only district in the state which does not have the facility of a CSD canteen having ultra-modern facilities for want of proper space.Besides, in the absence of" self service facility" at the CSD canteen, they have to face a lot of inconvenience in purchasing goods from the canteen. Though about six years back, the construction work of " Sainik Sadan" was started in 78 marlas at nearby Sloh village to provide facilities like ECHS Poly Clinic, ultra modern CSD canteen,Sainik Rest House, office of District Sainik Welfare Officer, Sainik Vocational Academy etc under one roof to the ex-servicemen and their dependents the project was abandoned mid-way on the pretext that the under construction " Sainik Sadan" is far away from the district headquarters. At that time, it was decided to dispose of the under construction " Sainik Sadan" and to utilise the amount on the construction work on the land got allotted in the administrative complex here in the town. But, neither the present under construction " Sainik Sadan" has been disposed of so far nor the construction work at the newly- allotted site near telephone exchange here could be started during the past about three years. Besides, the land allotted near telephone exchange to the District Sainik Welfare department is not adequate to house various facilities to ex- servicemen under one roof. Due to this, the office of the District Sainik Welfare Officer, CSD canteen and the ECHS polyclinic are being run in rented buildings at different places in the town. The CSD canteen is being run in a rented building near village Barnala Kalan situated on the Jalandhar -Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway. Due to the lack of space for the storage of goods, queue space in front of the billing windows and delivery counters and parking etc., the ex-servicemen have to face inconvenience. Though the local CSD canteen caters to about 8,000 card holders, due to inadequate storage capacity, the canteen authorities are forced to cut down the demand. Consequently, the ex- servicemen have been facing the scarcity of goods. Lt.Col Jernail Singh Lally ( retd.), presidentof the Ex- servicemen Welfare Association, said the Ex- servicemen had opposed the proposal to abandon the "Sainik Sadan" project and even afterwards, submitted memoranda during the past three years to at least set up canteen at the Sainik Sadan building to provide the facility of ultra- modern canteen having the facility of self service for the customers to ensure a hassle-free shopping. |
