The teams were accompanied by the officials of the Weights and Measures Department. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rajat Aggarwal also instructed the teams if any petrol station was found deceiving the consumers, a strict police action would be registered under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC and Section 7 of the Essential Commodity Act. Consumers resent petrol price hike
Amritsar, March 3 Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kissan Sangarsh Committee flayed the move saying the government effected the second hike within a fortnight. Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) president JP Khanna said the price hike by oil companies was necessitated by an increase in international crude oil prices along with depreciation in the value of rupee against US dollar. He said the Punjab government had been charging 27.5 per cent VAT in addition to 10 per cent surcharge, 1.5 per cent per liter cess and one per cent octroi. The sum of all these taxes was 32.75 per cent tax in Punjab on a liter of petrol. In Haryana, he said, VAT stands at 20.5 per cent and no other tax is imposed. In Himachal, VAT is 24 per cent and no other tax is
in place. Ramanjeet Kaur, a working woman, said every increase in petrol prices has a cascading effect on the domestic budget. |

Powercom engineers threaten to launch agitation
Amritsar, March 3 The association in a meeting held here recently had pointed out that the lack of proper staff had added burden on them. The association also criticised the delay in rationalisation of workload norms. Ishwar Dass, joint secretary of the association, said the PSPCL should create new posts as per the work norms in order to achieve the targets fixed by the department. “The engineers are overburdened due to non-rationalisation of workload norms,” said Ishwar Dass adding that in view of the new requirements such as RTS Act, RTI
Act and Standards of Performance Act, the workload has substantially increased as compared to past several years,” Ishwar Dass said. Though the PSPCL authorities had constituted a committee for rationalisation of workload norms, they instead referred the matter to the Punjab government, he pointed out. JS Suchu said the management had also failed to solve the problems of field engineers. The issue of impractical norms regarding outsourcing vehicles was still pending, JS Suchu added. The association threatened to launch an agitation if the Powercom authorities failed to resolve their issues. |
