Parents take out rally; seek CBI probe
Protesters lay siege to Shaheedi Chowk; demand action against school management Tribune News Service
Jammu, February 21 Report said more than 400 people, including members of civil society and women, carrying placards took out a rally and marched towards the school premises at the Residency Road here. The protesters later squatted outside the school and shouted slogans against its owner Ajat Shatru Singh who is a senior National Conference (NC) leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC). “We demand probe in the child’s death and arrest of the director, principal and transport incharge of the achool as their failure to take action on time led to the tragedy,” said Surjeet Choudhary, father of the victim. Later, they blocked the busy Shaheedi Chowk against the alleged casual attitude of the school management which led to a huge traffic snarl on the road for hours together. With the intervention of senior police officials and civil administration, the protesters dispersed peacefully thus allowing the movement of vehicles on the road, which is close to the official residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The protesters alleged that the management has misled the victim’s family members about the incident. They said it had destroyed vital evidences in the case. They said the parents had already demanded replacement of the old school buses but no attention was given to their repeated appeals. The school has courted controversy many times in the past as well. In October last year, 40 DPS students had a narrow escape when brakes of the bus they were traveling in failed near the Raghunath temple when they were on their way back home. The bus driver reportedly lost control over the vehicle after the bus hit a Hyundai Santro car. Later, some passersby and traffic policemen stopped the bus and evacuated the children from it. Togadia detained at Jammu Airport, sent back
Jammu, February 21 The VHP leader was on a two-day scheduled visit to Jammu. The district administration as a precautionary measure had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 banning assembly of more than four people outside the Jammu Airport. A large number of security personnel were deployed outside the airport. “VHP leader Pravin Togadia was barred from entering Jammu because his presence could lead to law and order problem,” a senior police official said. The step, he said, was taken by the state government in view of his last year's visit to Rajouri district where his “provocative speech” had triggered tension between two communities. The police swung into action as soon as the VHP leader came out of the Delhi-Jammu Jet Connect Flight at 11.30 am. As Togadia started moving towards the arrival lounge along with other passengers, he was stopped by a police party telling him that he had been denied permission by the administration from entering the state. Togadia was not allowed to come out of the airport and after spending three hours in the VIP lounge was sent back by the authorities at 2.30 pm on Jammu-Delhi Jet Connect flight. Togadia was scheduled to attend several programmes at different places in the Jammu region during his two-day visit. State VHP president Dr Rama Kant Dubey, along with activists of the Bajrant Dal who had been waiting outside the airport to receive Togadia, criticised the state government for detaining Togadia. The activists raised anti-government slogans outside the Jammu Airport. “Praveen Togadia, like every other citizen of the country, has fundamental right to visit any part of India but his detention at the Jammu Airport shows that the J&K government's policy is to appease only the anti-national elements,” said Dubey while addressing the media outside the airport. Dubey also accused the government of allowing free movement to separatists anywhere in the state and the country. He warned of nationwide protests against the move. |
