Not paid for last year,
jkba set to host another tourney
Jammu, February 10 “The dates for conducting the championship are yet to be announced, but the JKBA has intensified its efforts to arrange finance for smooth conduct of the coveted championship,” said an official. The official said during the recently concluded senior national badminton championship at Srinagar, the JKBA had faced
many hurdles despite receiving a financial grant from the Badminton Association of India to host the championship. Sources said in the recently held meeting of office-bearers of affiliated sports associations of the Sports Council by Sports Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, the issue of grant-in-aid had dominated the proceedings wherein the associations who had hosted national championships expressed strong resentment over non-disbursing of aid. “Tournaments like the north zone badminton championship is mandatory for every state to host. After 2006, it is the turn of Jammu and Kashmir this time to host this tournament and we are determined to conduct it at any cost. As far as senior national championship is concerned, it can be cancelled if the association faces paucity of funds or other reasons but not in case of north zone championship,” said the official. Sources said the state badminton association was waiting for the month of April not only to receive the grant-in-aid for conducting domestic competitions but also re-imbursement of the expenditure
it had incurred for hosting Senior National Badminton Championship in 2012. Sources said the association had spent an amount to the tune of Rs 55 lakh to host the championship. “Dr OD Sharma, general secretary of the J&K Badminton Association, said: “Yes, we have been entrusted the responsibility to host the North Zone Badminton Championship this year and we will try our level best to ensure its smooth conduct”. “The last edition of the championship was held at Panchkula. With the kind of team we have, the association is hopeful of conducting it with great success”, he added. Jammu, February 10 All Parties Migrants Co-ordination Committee (APMCC) chairman Vinod Pandit is on an indefinite fast at Porbandar for past 12 days in support of the six-point charter of demands of the community. Members of the party district unit and various other organisations of Kashmiri Pandits have appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Centre to intervene into the matter. They also demanded introduction of the Temples and Shrines Bill to safeguard the religious and cultural property of the Hindus in the Valley, which they alleged was being snatched by the land mafia. “The state government and the UPA government have been taking Pandits for granted and are insensitive towards the fast unto death by the APMCC chairman. This proves that it was not bothered about the issues of the minority community," they alleged. A delegation submitted a memorandum to the UN office here demanding that the six-point charter of demands to be implemented. “If the government can trade along the LoC with Pakistan, why can't they take steps to facilitate the visit to the shrine,” ASKPC president Hira Lal Chatta said. |

Erratic BSNL supply irks subscribers
Batote, February 10 DC
Doda, Farooq Ahmed Khan said, “The poor BSNL service in Doda district has adversely affected the working in the offices, especially the monitoring of the progress of national flagship
programmes. It has been worst now as all phones, mobile phones and internet services have been defunct in the area for the past fortnight. Recently, me and DC, Kishtwar could not hold a video conference with the state Home Minister due to this.” According to the BSNL sources, the frequency of thefts of the OFC at a specific stretch at Assar in Doda had increased so much that it was stolen within a day or couple of hours of its repairs. “Since the beacon does not allow us to lay the OFC underground so we have to keep it hanging from trees or poles,” said a BSNL officer on the condition of anonymity. A beacon officer wishing anonymity said “Unlike all their competitors, they had laid the OFC without our permission or depositing the compulsory damage charges, despite holding a joint survey. Had they done so, we would have known its location and prevented its damage during the clearance of the road of snow, stones and soil. Moreover, the OFC was not laid underground to the mandatory depth of one meter.” Even during the Telephone Advisory Committee
(TAC) meeting on February 6, the TAC chairman and Member of Parliament, Choudhary Lal Singh, while resenting the slew of complaints against the BSNL and the non-registration of even a single FIR despite the spate of thefts or damages of cables along the NH1A and Batote-Doda NH1B, directed the
TDM, BSNL, Udhampur, AK Sharma to ensure the registration of FIR in every such case, besides asking him to submit the compliance report of his recommendations within ten days to improve the network and services. — Farooq Ahmed Khan, DC Doda |

Women musicians not unusual, say singers from Islamic nations
New Delhi, February 10 "Women in our country dance and sing on stage. They are even allowed to sing Sufi and spiritual music -- traditionally a male bastion," Slim Baccouche, leader of Mechket Ensemble, a Sufi band from Tunisia, told IANS. "Music is the gift of freedom for us in which men and women are equal," said Baccouche, here to perform at the International Sufi Festival which concluded here recently. "Women bands are common in Tunisia," he said. His band, though traditional, combines Arabic Sufi music with jazz, techno, western gospel and 'qawaali'. "Sufi culture and spirituality as a whole are changing. We are open to exchange," he said. Sahar Lotfi, who leads a Sufi band in Iran, said she was surprised that "a Kashmiri women's rock band was forced to give up (performing)". Known for her powerful voice, Lofti finds nothing "unusual about women pursuing music as a vocation". She said her husband encouraged her to keep her "love for music alive". "My husband had a band. We met at a concert. After marriage, he persuaded me to set up a band," said Lotfi, here to perform at the Sufi music festival. Another woman musician at the fest was Sakina Ismayilova, a Mugam devotional music exponent from Azerbaijan, who set up the first women Mugam musical trio and took in around the world. "Mugam is an ancient and difficult tradition, especially for women," she said. Among Indian Sufi singers at the fest was Indira Naik. She is seen as a symbol of cross-cultural synergy -- a Hindu woman singing Muslim poet Amir Khusrau's verses. "The love for humanity in Sufism suits my temperament," Naik told IANS. Zila Khan, another Indian Sufi singer, said she has been through many ups and downs. In a recent interview, the daughter of sitar maestro Vilayat Khan said some male members of her family had objected to her singing. She now campaigns for "dignity for women in music". Three schoolgirls had last year formed Kashmir Valley's first all-girl rock band Pragaash, which in December stood third in a 'Battle of Bands' competition. But after they faced threats on social media and a fatwa by Kashmir's Grand Mufti Bashiruddin, the girls decided to wind up the band.
