New Delhi, February 4
A 16-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped and a 25-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by her former colleague in two separate incidents. The first incident took place at Begumpur on the outskirts of Delhi, where a 38-year-old man, Gang Ram, allegedly kidnapped his neighbour and raped her for seven days.

The girl is a student of Class X. She went missing on January 25 when she didn't return home from school. Her family lodged a missing person's complaint at the Begumpur police station.

On Saturday, investigators were tipped off that the victim had been confined to a house near her residence.

A police officer said, "We conducted a raid and rescued the girl."

A medical examination of the girl confirmed the rape. A case was registered and the accused, Ram, arrested. He has been charged with kidnapping and raping the victim.

In the second incident, a 26-year-old woman today allegedly disclosed to the police that she was raped by her former colleague in Narela, located on the outskirts of Delhi.

The police said that the accused is identified as Sanjay Kumar. He was arrested and a rape case registered against him at the local police station.

The woman worked in a factory with the accused. She has alleged that he sexually assaulted her a month ago, but she kept quiet about the incident and later even quit her job.

The victim told the police that on Saturday, Kumar came to her house to apologize, but he allegedly raped her again. She then approached the police and registered a complaint against him.

After the victim's medical examination, Kumar was arrested today.

Two rape attempts

Three persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to rape two minor girls at southwest Delhi's Bindapur and east Delhi's Trilokpuri in two separate incidents over the past 24 hours. In the first incident, two men in their thirties, tried to rape a Class 4 student inside her house in Bindapur.

According to the police, the 10-year-old victim was alone at home when the incident took place at about 3 pm today.

"Two people entered the house saying that they are doing some repairing work as there was seepage on the ground floor," a police official said. The victim allowed them inside. One of them locked the door and the other tried to rape her. As the victim screamed for help, her neighbours broke open the door and nabbed the accused. The two men were handed over to the police.

In the second incident, a man allegedly tried to rape his seven-year-old neighbour at Trilokpuri on Sunday.

Sources claim that Vinay took the girl to his room on the pretext of giving her a chocolate. He fled after the victim raised the alarm. He was later arrested from the Sarai Kale Khan railway station.

Another police official said the accused was planning to flee to Gwalior.

CM, Sibal meet on redeveloping Chandni Chowk
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 4
The Delhi Government has decided to initiate work on redevelopment of Chandni Chowk. This was decided at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attended by Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal and senior officials of the Public Welfare Department, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Delhi Jal Board and other agencies concerned. The project includes improvement of streets and creating pedestrian-friendly environment.

The project has been divided into two phases: undergrounding of all the services and Chandni Chowk renewal.

"Sibal also underlined the importance of starting the work early as the project has been hanging fire due to the multiplicity of authorities. It has been decided to take back the roads above 60 ft width from the MCD and transfer them to the PWD," said Dikshit.

It has been decided that the services would be under 2 ft inside the ground. The DJB lines are already underground. Hanging power cables from Jain Lal Mandir to Fatehpuri Masjid have spoiled the heritage value of the walled city.

"Power distribution companies, MTNL and IGL have been directed to get their lines underground in consultation with the PWD and the DMRC. The DMRC has been asked to provide its expertise in making the lines underground without disturbing traffic in the localities," she said. A coordination group has been constituted for redevelopment of Chandni Chowk. All the agencies have been told to work in tandem to ensure completion of the project within the time, she added.
