Youth gets life term for murder
Chandigarh, February 4
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge VP Sirohi today sentenced an accused to life imprisonment for the murder of a Class IX student in 2011. The court sentenced the taxi driver, Parminder Singh (22), to undergo life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him. The murder took place in August 2011. The accused was arrested on a charge of murdering Mandeep Kaur, a Class IX student of Government Model High School in Sector 41.

Bloomers galore in NCERT biology books for classes XI & XII
Chandigarh, February 4
“Dengue is characterised by a significant increase in the platelet count!” This statement may leave health experts shocked as the platelet count actually goes down in dengue fever but the bloomer is recorded in the biology resource book of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) meant for students of Class XI of the CBSE.

Rusty stretchers add to patients' woes

High drama at day market

High drama was witnessed at the day market of Sector 42 today when a demolition squad of the UT Estate Office reached the market to remove the illegal partitions raised by shopkeepers. However, the officials gave the shopkeepers two days' time to voluntarily remove the structures.

Review of PCA functioning
UT to approach Home Ministry
Chandigarh, February 4
The UT Administration, which believes that the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) in some cases has “exceeded” its jurisdiction while passing orders, has decided to approach the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to review the functioning of the PCA. A senior official of the UT Administration said there were certain instances, which had come to light where the Police Complaint Authority had actually ordered the suspension or transfer of an official exceeding its jurisdiction.

Show Aadhaar No. to get LPG cylinder

A project of using Aadhar number for paying LPG subsidy to the people through banks will come into force in the city on pilot basis from February 15. The city, along with four district of Himachal Pradesh and three of Punjab, has been selected from the north.

City govt schools to go hi-tech

The government schools in Chandigarh are all set to go hi-tech. The UT Education Department has initiated first of its kind project “School Management Information System” to establish the e-communication between government schools and directorate besides giving the government schools the exposure of daily governance through online system.

After getting a clarification from the social welfare department, the UT education department has begun the process to release the provisional and final merit list of 48 Junior Basic Teachers (JBT) and 18 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) under OBC category.

PGI surgeon gets Dr Joe V Desa Memorial Oration Award

Prof Ashok Gupta, ENT-surgeon of PGIMER, Chandigarh, was honoured with the Dr Joe V Desa-Memorial Oration Award at the 65th Annual Conference of the “Association of Otolaryngologists of India-AOI” in Pune today. Prof Gupta has been the first Indian recipient of this oration since the inception its for over two decades.

The district police has arrested 3 drug peddlers who were involved in sale of drugs during checking in the district and recovered 260 gm smack, 7,000 intoxicant tablets and 5 kg poppy husk from their possession.

Inter-varsity fencing tourney begins

5th All India Intervarsity Fencing began, here at Multi Gymnasium Indoor Hall Punjabi University. Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University, inaugurated the tournament. and thereafter, Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, Director Sports, welcomed the guests. As many as 35 universities with 470 fencers from around the country are competing.

Drug peddlers sentenced to 10 years in jail
Chandigarh, February 4
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced two accused to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in a case of drug peddling. The court sentenced Harpal, alias Raju, and another accused, Ompal, to 10 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on them.

In the alleged case of medical negligence at the hands of the PGIMER, which led to the death of 16-year-old Anupama in July last year, the PGIMER today submitted the report of external committee inquiring the cause of the death before the UT Consumer Forum.

12 held for creating ruckus over property
Chandigarh, February 4
A property dispute pertaining to a one-kanal house in Sector 21 in Chandigarh turned awry last night when the police had to intervene and arrest 12 persons for creating ruckus. Of 12, eight were women, including the wife and other family members of a Punjab Vigilance official, the police said.

A bloody clash over discussion pertaining to a cricket match occurred between two groups in Ram Darbar last night. The police has registered a cross case of murder attempt acting on a complaint from both the rival groups.

Youth jumps before train, dies
Mohali, February 4
A 25-year-old youth of Phase 11 allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train here last evening. The deceased has been identified as Karan, an owner of a shop at 'Khoka market’ in Phase 11.

Couple dupes man of Rs 90 lakh
Panchkula, February 4
In a major fraud, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula, was duped of Rs 90 lakh by a Panchkula-based couple on the pretext of giving him possession of a bungalow in Sector 8, Panchkula. The victim, Satyaveer Kothari, has accused Satpal Garg and Chander Kanta Garg of fooling him.
