Two cases for torturing and maltreating wives by their husbands for bringing dowry from their parents had been registered in Mukerian and Tanda police stations.

Drug peddler arrested
Phagwara, January 31
The police has arrested a drug peddler, Anil Kumar, resident of Pharala village, and recovered 5 gm of heroin from his possession. Anil Kumar was nabbed during a naka near Kot Rani village, the police said. — OC

Class VII girl dies in school

Tarn Taran, January 31
Sharanjit Kaur, a class VII student of Government Girls High School, Shahabazpur, 20 km from here, died of heart failure in the school during the recess.

DK Mahia, Distrtict Education Officer (Secondary), Paramjit Singh, Deputy District Education Officer (S), and other officials rushed to the school soon after hearing the news.

Sharanjit was playing in the school when she complained of chest pain and fell. The school authorities called 108 ambulance and she was taken to the local Civil Hospital, where the doctors declared her dead.

The matter has brought to the notice of the higher authorities of the department and the Deputy Commissioner.

Charges framed against all 7 accused in Gurdaspur gang-rape case

Gurdaspur, January 31
Charges were framed against all the seven accused involved in the gang rape of a 29-year-old married woman in the court of the Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) amid tight security.

All the accused were produced in the court of Baljinder Kaur Sidhu, ASJ, in the morning with the police making tight security arrangements lest any untoward incident take place. The proceedings were held in camera with even the media not being allowed in the court room. The court of the ASJ has also been designated as the court for crime against women.

The charges were framed under Section 376(G) of the IPC and trial will be held on the day-to-day basis.

The accused were represented by senior criminal lawyers Karanjit Singh, SS Basra and KK Puri.

The woman, a mother of two, was raped on January 11 and all the accused were nabbed by the police within 72 hours of the incident taking place at a secluded place near Gurdaspur town.

Two dowry cases registered

Hoshiarpur, January 31
Two cases for torturing and maltreating wives by their husbands for bringing dowry from their parents had been registered in Mukerian and Tanda police stations.

According to the police, Neelam Kumari, daughter of Bishan Das of Purana Bhangala, alleged that she was married to Sandeep Kumar of Mohalla Roari, Gurdaspur, on November 18, 2011. Since her marriage, Sandeep Kumar used to torture and beat her for bringing dowry from her parents.

The Mukerian police has booked Sandeep Kumar under Sections 323 and 498 A of the IPC.

The Tanda police also booked Amandeep Singh of Harsi Pind under Sections 498 A and 506 of the IPC for allegedly torturing and maltreating his wife Amarjit Kaur, daughter of Parkash Singh of Maddi village for bringing dowry from her parents.

3 arrested with liquor, opium

The district police arrested three persons, including a woman, and seized liquor and opium from them last evening.

According to the police, while patrolling in the area of Thakur Dwara village the Mukerian police arrested Akki, wife of Billa of Jahanpur, and seized 6.750 litres of illicit liquor from her.

The Sadar police has arrested Amit Nayer of the local Chand Nagar, Bahadurpur, during patrolling in the area of Bassi Gulam Hussain village and seized 500 gm opium from him.

The city police arrested Raj Kumar of the local Dholkian Gali and seized six bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) from him.

Snatcher held

Two youths, identified as Ashok Kumar and Raj Kumar, both of local Bhadurpur, snatched a purse containing Rs 1,100 from Kulwinder Kaur of the local Mohalla Gobindgarh last evening.

According to the police, Kulwinder Kaur and her sister-in-law Maninder Kaur was returning to their house in a rickshaw from market. When they reached near Committee Bazaar two clean-shaven youths on an Activa scooter snatched the bag containing Rs 1,100 from her. The police arrested Ashok Kumar, while Raj Kumar managed to flee.

A case under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the duo at the City police station.

Man, son killed in road accident

A man and his son were killed in a road accident near Moonka today.

Mandeep Singh (40), son of Karnail Singh of Bhanna village, and his 10-year-old son Navjot Singh died on the spot when a truck (No JK-14H-1261), going towards Pathankot from Jalandhar, collided head-on with their Maruti Zen car (No PB-67-4678) near Moonka on the Tanda-Pathankot road this morning.

The Tanda police has registered a case.
