Amritsar, January 25 Demanding justice, the association members today submitted a memorandum to Industry Ministry Anil Joshi. They also met RP Mittal, IG border range, seeking cancellation of the “fake” FIR. They urged the IG to hold an impartial inquiry into the incident by a senior police official. “How can few people (owners and employees of the rice shelling unit) attack a 35-member strong team of the department? What were the armed security guards accompanying the team doing,” questioned Harish Devgan, president of the Amritsar Rice Sheller Association. Though heated arguments did take place during the 5-hour stay of the raiding party, there was no ‘murderous attack’ on the team. “Owner Krishan Kumar Chadha and his two sons have been framed up by the department as they had refused to bow before the illegitimate demands of the raiding party, headed by Varinder Pannu, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner,” Devgan alleged. He said the associations of Amritsar and Tarn Tarn rice shellers had decided not to lift and mill the government paddy till the case was cancelled and action is not taken against the department staff, which raided BN Rice Sheller. The “aggrieved” contractors claimed they have been running from pillar to post to get their bills cleared. One of the contractors said the prevailing corruption in the MC office was reason for the non-payment of their dues. “Before getting our bills cleared, we have to give a fixed percentage of the amount to officials. Though we have given our share, our bills are still gathering dust in the MC office,” said few of the contractors. Taking cognisance, MC Commissioner Bhupinder Singh assured them of early disbursal of their dues. He also instructed the Superintending Engineer to intervene in the matter. “I have monitored the whole scenario and I can assure them that there would never be any unnecessary delay in disbursal of their payments. I have deputed senior officials to plug the loopholes in the system. If any employee is found adopting wrong practice, the MC will take stern action against him,” he said. |
