Consistency and hard work is the key, says topper
Srinagar, January 23 Surprised at her feat, she says though she was expecting a good result, she did not expect the first position in her kitty. “For me, first position was out of bounds. But now, I am really happy. The God has favoured me in all respects,” an elated Amara told The Tribune. As for her success mantra, studying for 8-9 hours at a stretch during examinations is required for performing brilliantly. Having studied in not so posh schools of Srinagar, she believes the brand name of the school hardly matters when it comes to achieving desirable results. “Consistency along with hard work is the key,” she said. Ever since Kindergarten, Amara has been topping in her class both in Tiny Hearts School, Rajbagh, where she studied till Class X and later Iqbal Memorial Institute, where she did her Class XII in science stream. As for her career pursuits, she has set her eyes on becoming a doctor. “I am keen on serving the society. And medical profession is one by which I can do the same. I have already started preparing for medical entrance examinations and enrolled in coaching institutes,” said Amara. Amara’s father, Muzaffar-ul-Islam, a government employee working with Geology and Mining Department, says Amara has proved she could be as good as a son and rather better than many sons. “I have two daughters and never in my mind did this thought cross that I should have a son too. My daughters have made me feel proud. What more can a father ask for?” Muzaffar said. |

Over 65,000 challans issued in 2012
Srinagar, January 23 However, the maximum fine (Rs 18.69 lakh) was collected in the month of July when 6,826 vehicles were challaned. The least number of traffic violations took place in January as lesser number of two wheelers ply on the roads in winters here due to inclement weather conditions. Only 3,357 challans were issued in January and Rs 9.31 lakh was collected as fine. In February too, only 3,538 challans were issued and a fine of Rs 11 lakh was realised. Out of 65,418 challans, 56,432 were compound challans while 8,986 were court challans. The year 2012 saw an increase of around Rs 32 lakh in collection as fine due to traffic violations. The Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Haseeb-ur-Rehman, said around Rs 1.45 crore was realised through challans in 2011. The traffic police had launched a series of challan drives last year and held many awareness programmes. The department had also launched novel programmes to make people follow traffic rules that continue to be flouted. The traffic police had launched a four-day counselling drive in September where senior police officials counselled the violators instead of fining them. The traffic police had also distributed chocolates and New Year cards to drivers found following traffic rules earlier this month during ‘Traffic Week’ functions. |

Omar to visit Kupwara today
Srinagar, January 23 During his address, sources indicate, the Chief Minister is expected to lay stress on infrastructure development and
education sectors in the district, which is one of the backward districts of Kashmir division. During the rejig, while dropping seven ministers from his previous Cabinet, Omar had appointed three Cabinet-rank ministers from Kupwara district, thus giving the district the highest-ever representation in the Cabinet so far. Sources within the National Conference say Omar is visiting Kupwara with a view to bolster the image of the National conference cadre in the district and convey a sense that Kupwara figures on his priority list. “Basically, it is a welcome rally which is being held in Kupwara on Thursday and we expect a good gathering”, said newly appointed Law Minister and MLA Kupwara Mir Saifullah. Asked if Omar wanted to convey to the people that Kupwara was on his priority list, Mir said, “Kupwara is already on the priority list of the Chief Minister and it can be gauged from the fact that three
Cabinet-rank ministers are from Kupwara”. He, however, conceded that Kupwara district was one of the most neglected and backward districts in the region. “In the coming years, the priority of the government will be on development of roads, irrigation and flood canal systems, with an added focus on the education”, the Law Minister said. Asked if the recent developments indicate that the NC is eyeing 2014 elections, Mir said the development of far-flung and neglected areas was always the priority of the National Conference-led government. The other Cabinet-rank ministers from the district include Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) and Transport Minister Choudhary Ramzan and MLA Karnah Kafeel-ur-Rehman, who after being appointed as chairman of the Pahari Advisory Board, was elevated to the rank of Cabinet minister. |

PDP accuses National Conference of double standards
Srinagar, January 23 In a statement issued here today, the party’s chief spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said the ruling party had converted double speak into a fine art and Abdullah’s remarks were a typical sample of that. Akhtar said historically the leaders of the NC were known to speak different languages at different places and at different times. But, with diminishing stature of its leaders, the party has assigned different roles to the top leaders coming from Abdullah family, he alleged. “Under this division of labour strategy, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah keep the powers in New Delhi in good humour while the task of befooling Kashmiris has been assigned to Sheikh Nazir Ahmad and Mustafa Kamal, who keep the separatist pot simmering”, Akhtar added. The PDP spokesman said the ‘forked tongue’ of the NC leadership had devastated the lives of many generations in the state and had even contributed to hostilities between India and Pakistan. He said the NC leaders from Abdullah family like Sheikh Nazir Ahmad
and Mustafa Kamal had called for withdrawal of troops from the state and holding of plebiscite so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir could determine whether to remain a party of India or accede to Pakistan. Akhtar said the party was trying to black
mail the Centre into continuing its blind support to the party. “The statements calling for a plebiscite could be a tactics to convey a message to the
centre that the NC could create problems in case its unilateral demand for a coalition with congress is not accepted”, he said. |

Probe ordered into collapse of 220 KV transmission towers
Srinagar, January 23 “The transmission line which was damaged due to recent snowfall is not currently operational. Also, a final inspection of the Zainakote-Amargarh
transmission line is yet to be done before commissioning. But we have ordered a probe as the works of the transmission line were being supervised by us,” the Chief Engineer S&O, Gul Ayaz, said. “Due to this damage, its commissioning will be delayed,” he added. However, sources said, an inquiry team of five members headed by Superintending Engineer Fayaz Andrabi was constituted only after the department came under criticism for the damage caused to the transmission
line just days before its commissioning. “The inquiry will thoroughly look into
the circumstances that led to the collapse of the towers and furnish report in two weeks,”
the inquiry order read. Sources said had this transmission line been operational, it
would have caused a major tragedy. “There has not been heavy snowfall
in the area where these towers were damaged and it raises questions about the executing and supervising agency as the line
was to be commissioned in the next few days,” said another official of
the PDD. |
