Molestation: 3 cops suspended
Kulgam, January 21 Protests rocked the village after a family alleged that an all-men police party raided their house on Saturday night and molested two of their teenaged daughters after beating the family members. The girls along with their father and brother, according to the family, were detained at the Kulgam police station throughout the night. The police, however, had refuted the allegations. “No night raid was conducted at the Sheikh household. The family members were arrested on Sunday morning and released after questioning,” Kulgam Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Shafi had said. He stated that none of the family members was beaten up or girls were molested. “It was the family members of Sheikh who attacked the police personnel inside their house. Their elder son is involved in many cases, including gambling,” the SP had maintained. He had stated that the family members had inflicted the injury marks upon themselves to frame the police in a bad light. On Monday, the DC said he visited the house and talked to the family members. “I have ordered an inquiry. The Additional Deputy Development Commissioner will head the inquiry and submit a report within 15 days,” said the DC. He said he had also directed the SP to collect prima facie evidence from the house and act accordingly. Meanwhile, the SP has put under suspension a sub-inspector, a head constable and a constable, believed to have conducted the raid. “The services of a special police officer have been disengaged. Moreover, the SHO has been line attached,” said a police source. |

Minister Kitchloo visits 2 police stations in old city
Srinagar, January 21 He interacted with officers and police personnel deputed there. The Minister, who was accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, received a guard of honour on his arrival. Both police stations, Safa Kadal and M R Gunj, have been at the forefront of a major crackdown against protesters in the aftermath of 2008 and 2010 street protests. The areas falling under the two stations include several volatile neighbourhoods of the old city where protests had become a daily routine during street unrests in the previous years. The Minister appreciated the role of officers and police personnel deputed there for maintaining law and order and keeping a check on crimes, a police spokesman said. Kitchloo, who succeeded Nasir Aslam Wani and was given the new portfolio to look after the Home Department in the recent Cabinet reshuffle, also lauded the policemen for being the front runners in rescue and rehabilitation of people in case of any natural calamity, the spokesman said. “The Minister stressed upon the policemen to hone their soft skills while dealing with people, as general public look upon the police with lot of expectations,” the spokesman said. Kitchloo had on Sunday held his first security review meeting with senior officers of the police department at the Police Control Room here and had stressed upon the officers to develop better police-public relations at the grass root level to mitigate problems and grievances of the public. |

Srinagar, January 21 “You rightly complain about school/college infrastructure but accept rubbish from these centres. Why? No toilets, heating, rooms?” Omar posted on Twitter. He said there was no ban on coaching centres, but they had been asked to improve their infrastructure as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the coaching centres have called off their three days long strike and will resume their routine work from tomorrow. The district administration has agreed to the demands of the Coaching Centres Association (CCA) in relaxing the deadline till April for the implementation of the guidelines which were detailed earlier. However, we wanted more time and we are thankful to the Chief Minister, district administration for giving us the same,” Var said. He said the single tutor system, which had invited criticism from parents and government, would be done away with and that various expert teachers would come under one institute to teach students. |

Handwara residents seek establishment of nursing college
Handwara, January 21 They said Handwara Tehsil comprising 352 villages has been deprived of such college and students were forced to go to Srinagar and outside the state
to pursue B Sc nursing, female multi-purpose health worker (FMPHW) course and a few
other courses at much higher cost. They appealed the Minister for Health to look into the matter and consider their genuine demand. “In absence of the AMT School and nursing college, many aspirants are forced to pursue job-oriented degrees, including B Sc nursing and FMPHW, from institutions located outside the state. A degree or course, which costs around Rs 50,000 in a government college, incurs at least two times more fee in private colleges outside the state,” said Sarpanch Nazir Ahmad of Wadder Bala village in Handwara. Locals said the AMT school in Kupwara has intake capacity of only 95 seats in FMPHW, general nursing and X-ray courses and it does not
offer any degree course in nursing. “There is a growing demand for B Sc nursing in contemporary times. Hundreds of aspirants are forced to go outside the state to pursing a degree in nursing at much higher cost in private colleges. A nursing college can benefit these aspirants,” said Ashiq Hussian of Bakiakar Handwara. Minister for Food and Supplies and Transport Chowdary Mohd Ramzan, who is also MLA from Handwara, said the
AMT school and nursing college was a long pending demand of people of the border district. “Earlier, a location has been marked for constructing a
nursing college in Handwara. The foundation stone of college hopefully will be laid this year,” said the minister. |

Power supply restored in villages
Kupwara, January 21 “The power supply was restored to our village after four days. We were groping in darkness as the electricity supply to the village was snapped due to snowfall on Thursday,” said Abdul Hamid of Darpora in Lolab. A senior power official of the power division Kupwara said at many places electric poles were uprooted and lines snapped due to the snowfall. “Our field men worked hard in these inaccessible areas to restore the power. At some places, wooden poles were replaced by iron poles to ensure that they do not get damaged due to snowfall in the future,” he said. Residents of few villages in Handwara town complained that electric wires were lying suspended on polar trees and pose serious threat to human lives. “We appeal to the power department to erect iron or cement poles to avert the threat to human lives. Suspended electric lines always cause threat to our lives,” said Mohd Akbar of Kandi village. Locals of few other villages complained of low voltage. “Although the power supply was restored after four days but the voltage is too low and does not serve much purpose. It (the voltage) fails to illuminate a corner of a room,” said Shabir Ahmad of Chowkibal, 27 Km from Kupwara. |
