Upgrade or face action, coaching centres told
Anantnag, January 11 Reports said the district administration has asked the coaching centres to get themselves registered and improve infrastructure within 15 days, failing which they will be liable to face legal action. Earlier this week, the district administration had sealed six unregistered coaching centres for making their students study in unhealthy and shabby conditions. The Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC), Anantnag, Farooq Ahmad Shah, yesterday summoned owners of all private coaching centres in Anantnag and asked them to get themselves registered within the stipulated time. The meeting was also attended by the chief education officer (CEO), Anantnag, Abdul Ahad, and Additional Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Ghulam Muhammad Dar. “Any coaching centre found not adhering to regulations set by the Supreme Court and the Directorate of Education will be sealed and legal action will be initiated against them,” said the DDC. He said that the six sealed coaching centres would be allowed to reopen only if they follow the guidelines within the 15-day period. The coaching centres were also advised to arrange proper seating arrangement, separate washroom facilities for boys and girls and heating as well as cooling arrangements. They were also advised to declare subject-wise fee structure, maintain registers and charge fee on a monthly basis rather than charging it in one go. “This will allow the students to move elsewhere in case they are not satisfied,” said the DDC. He further directed the CEO to ensure that the guidelines are strictly followed. “No government teacher will be allowed to work in a private coaching centre as per the Supreme Court norms. Any government teacher found teaching in a private coaching centre will be taken to task,” said the DDC. |

Normalcy returns to Regipora after two-day shutdown
Kupwara, January 11 Shops in the market remained open and normal traffic movement was witnessed. Following assurances from the officials of electrical division Kupwara that power supply to the village would be restored by today evening, the shopkeepers called off the strike. Sources said the arrested youths and shopkeepers were also released today. Locals had threatened to intensify the protests if the arrested youth were not released. A senior official of the division said the transformer would be installed by the evening and power supply would be restored to the village. “The repair of the transformer is likely to get completed by this evening and the same would be installed after that,” he said. The trouble erupted on Wednesday when locals, including women and children, blocked the Kupwara-Chowkibal road near Regipora in protest against snapping of power supply to the village. They later clashed with the police and two of them were injured. The police had arrested eight youths, including two shopkeepers, on the charges of fomenting trouble and creating law and order problem in the local market. The electrical division Kupwara had earlier sought payment of pending electricity dues from the consumers to restore the power supply but now the division has agreed to restore supply to the village and give some time to the consumers to clear the pending dues. |

Kupwara residents demand railway link to Srinagar
Kupwara, January 11 People here said the facility of railways would not only save precious time of commuters, including employees and students, but would also prove helpful in transportation of goods. Reyaz Ahmad, an employee of the health department, said the people of Kupwara district had been deprived of the facility for long and it should be provided to them at the earliest so that they could benefit like the rest of the Valley. Many others said the facility would relieve them of high fuel prices and make long-distance travel to Srinagar hassle-free. “The poor commuters will be benefitted by the service. It takes around three hours to reach Srinagar by bus and the same distance will be covered in less than half an hour,” said Shahzad Ahmad Khan of Chowkibal. Traders said the train service would make transportation of goods easy and also cost them less. “In the absence of railway services, we are facing problems for transporting goods from Srinagar to Kupwara. The service will help in delivery of goods in time and promote our business. It will also relieve us of the extra fares incurred on the transportation of goods,” said Javid Ahmad, owner of a footwear shop at Kupwara bypass. Residents of the border areas said they needed the facility most as they were the worst sufferers, especially during the winter season. Kupwara Deputy Commissioner Sarmad Hafeez also echoed the people’s views about the rail services and said it would be of great help to the commuters and traders. |

Srinagar, January 11 “I can assure you that she will live a perfectly healthy life in a few years from now. She is going to grow into a pretty girl soon. I can only feel sorry for the parents who left her because of her appearance,” Dr Shabir told The Tribune. “Both her lip and palate require surgeries but after some period of time. We can’t do these surgeries quickly as that could hamper the growth of the child, particularly the alignment of her face,” he said.Dr Shabir said the second surgery would take place after some months which would set her nose in the right position and enable her eat properly besides helping her in respiration. “We are also considering getting her diagnosed by a dentist who will see the alignment of her teeth. But that again will be after sometime,” he added. Dr Shabir added operating upon infants is a complicated process but it is fairly possible if done with precision. He said Farzana would become perfectly normal with respect to her senses, be it eating or speaking. At present, Farzana is being taken care of by a Ganderbal-based couple who consider her as a blessing in their lives. |
