Car 'used in crime' found from MLA's house

In a major revelation in the Jyoti murder case, the Panchkula police recovered the car reportedly used in the crime from Himachal MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary's house late last night. The police is trying to find out who used the vehicle for the crime.

Factionalism in UT police may end 
Chandigarh, January 11
The city had become the stronghold of the UT police cadre DSPs during the past many years, which had resulted in the tarnishing of the image of the police. Certain officers have been accused of developing vested interests. With the UT police-DANIPS (Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Services) merger on the cards, it is being expected that the factionalism in the force and internal wrangling will lessen considerably.

3 labourers killed in mishaps at construction sites in city
Chandigarh, January 11
Three labourers were killed at two sites where construction work was under way in the city. In the first incident, two labourers fell to their death while working at the construction site of a Larsen and Turbo (L&T) hotel in the Industrial Area, Phase 1.

Swine flu claims another life
Chandigarh, January 11
A patient suffering from swine flu died at the PGI, Chandigarh, here today. The victim, Seema Sharma, hailed from Rajpura. This is the second death due to swine flu in the region.

Relief: Too little, too late
Chandigarh, January 11
Ninette Vas Sharma, wife of Adviser to Administrator KK Sharma, distributes blankets among the poor in Chandigarh on Friday. In a delayed exercise, almost a week after the city reeled under the extreme cold, the UT Red Cross Society distributed around 200 blankets to rickshaw-pullers and other poor persons in Sectors 18 and 19 here late this evening.

4 showrooms declared illegal
Mohali, January 11
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MCC) today declared four showrooms in Shahi Majra village unauthorised. Two of the showrooms out of four were even declared unsafe as their pillars had started giving way last evening leading to panic in the area.

‘Do Kauri Ka Khel’ staged
Chandigarh, January 11 
The play “Do Kauri Ka Khel” was staged at Tagore Theatre as a part of the ongoing TFT theatre festival. The play was enacted by the Amateur Theatre Group from Jammu. The play was based on Bertolt Brecht’s famous play “3 Penny Opera”.

Russian students cast a spell
Chandigarh, January 11
A delegation of Russian students presented their folk dance at the premises of Ryan International School, Chandigarh, as part of cultural exchange programme. The delegation, consisting of 18 students (9 boys and 9 girls) and a dance teacher, arrived in the city from an institute Happy Childhood, Russia.

PGI submits evasive affidavit to counsel’s questionnaire
Chandigarh, January 11
The attempt by the PGI authorities to evade responsibility in the Anupama death case, today continued before the UT State Consumer Commission with Dr Sameer Aggarwal, Nodal Officer, ATC, PGI today filing an evasive affidavit in reply to the questionnaire submitted by Advocate Pankaj Chandgothia, counsel for Anupama's parents. Chandgothia had asked 22 questions relating to the treatment of Anupama and the enquiry report.

Unhappy over area councillor Mukesh Bassi not being invited to the Lohri celebrations by the Sector 21 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), the city Mayor, Subhash Chawla, did not turn up at the celebrations today.

Sealing notices issued to 22 shops
Chandigarh, January 11
Acting tough on the occupiers of commercial establishments, which continue to be misused by them despite the premises being resumed by the administration, the UT Estate Office has issued sealing notices under section 10 to the occupiers of at least 22 prominent shops, including Talwar Jewellers and PC Jewellers, in Sector 22 here.

From dancer to running flesh trade racket

The accused woman in the case of assault on a girl from West Bengal, Seema, has been residing in the city for the past over 12 years. She used to work as a dancer in hotels in Sector 35 earlier and switched to flesh trade racket to earn more money, the police said, adding that she had been running a flesh trade racket for the past one year.

Now, Rs 10,000 scholarship for meritorious students

The annual scholarship for meritorious students in colleges affiliated to Panjab University has been raised to Rs 10,000 from Rs 6,000. The College Development Council, in its recent meeting, had raised the annual fund allocated to scholarships for the college students from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

Vijay Arora, a resident of Sector 23, is a worried parent. He had applied for his child’s admission to three schools in the city. Two of these schools have declared the result and the child failed to get through both of them.

No draw of lots in govt schools

Government schools will not be conducting draw of lots, scheduled for January 14, following a poor response. Sources in the Education Department said none of the government schools had made available any information about conducting draw of lots, as decided under the common admission schedule.

HC tells ministry to decide on contract appointments in NIPER
Chandigarh, January 11
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to take a final call on abolishing the contract system of appointment in the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER).

Two gang rape accused sent to judicial custody
Panchkula, January 11
The two accused, who allegedly gangraped a woman from Nepal near Morni last night, were produced in the court today and were sent to judicial custody.

Tax official acquitted
Chandigarh, January 11
The Special CBI Court today acquitted an official of the Income Tax Department in a case of corruption. Income Tax Inspector SL Sharma was arrested in 2010 for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. He was acquitted today after the prosecution failed to prove the charges against him.

Three arrested with stolen goods
Zirakpur, January 11 
The Zirakpur police has arrested three accused in connection with a case of theft. The police has also recovered stolen goods worth Rs 10 lakh from their custody.

Police files chargesheet against in-laws

The UT police today filed a chargesheet in the court against four persons in the Monica Goyal murder case reported last year on October 15. The police has attached the CFSL report in the chargesheet which was the most vital evidence in the case which pointed towards the possibility that the teacher was murdered by her husband and in-laws after her.

Panchkula, January 11
A 65-year-old man was shot dead by five youngsters who barged into their house at Pinjore late this evening. The victim, Krishan Lal, was in the kitchen when the youngsters fired at him following heated arguments. The youngsters also looted gold ornaments from the victim’s wife and daughter-in-law.

Chandigarh outplay Karnataka in hockey

It seems that Directorate of Sports, Panjab University, has learnt no lessons from the past and will continue to organise inter-college tournaments while framing its own rules and regulations.

What the ITF rules say
The Umpire’s Chair is recommended to be a minimum of six (6) feet (1.82 metres) and a maximum of eight (8) feet (2.44 metres) in height. The Umpire’s Chair shall be centred along an extension of the net approximately three (3) feet (0.9 metres) from the net post. If a microphone is to be used, it must have an “on-off” switch. It must be easily adjustable and not handheld. There shall be no public broadcast microphones on the Umpire’s Chair or in its general vicinity (between the baselines). For outdoor tournaments, there should be a sunscreen available.
