Woman gets 7-yr RI in dowry death case Hoshiarpur, November 20 Two more accused, Sudesh Kumari and Shashi Kumari, sisters-in-law of the victim, in the case were acquitted from the charges. The convict, Maya Devi, a resident of Dasuya, and her daughters - Sudesh Kumari and Shashi Kumari - were accused in the dowry death case. A case under Sections 304-B, 498-A of the IPC was registered against them at the Dasuya police station on the complaint of Bandana Sharma, wife of Ashwani Kumar, on December 1, 2006. Maya Devi has been convicted under Section 304-B of the IPC and will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years. She will have to be behind bars for one year on the charges framed against her under Section 798-A of the IPC. Earlier, the court has also sentenced three members of a Tanda-based family to seven years of RI in a dowry death case. The accused, Lakhwinder Singh, his father, Amarjit Singh, and mother, Kuldip Kaur, of Salempur (Tanda), have been sentenced under Section 304 B (dowry death) of the IPC for killing Rajwinder Kaur of Saidpur. A penalty of Rs 20,000 each was also slapped on the convicts. In case of non-payment of the amount, they would have to undergo further imprisonment of one year. Rajwinder was married to Lakhwinder on November 23, 2008. Lakhwinder, Amarjit and Kuldip used to torture and maltreat her for bringing dowry from her parents. After the marriage, she was blessed with a son. On November 24, 2009, Rajwinder's mother, Nirmal Kaur of Saidpur, received a telephonic message that her daughter was in a critical condition. When she reached her daughter's house, she found her dead. Rajwinder, as per medical reports, had died after consuming some poisonous substance. Her mother said due to the non-fulfilment of the dowry demand, her in-laws had killed her by feeding poison. |

Anti-drug addiction campaign held Nawanshahr, November 20 Deputy Commissioner Tanu M. Kashayap flagged off an awareness rally from the local Government Senior Secondary School. The students holding placards for sensitising the people to the ill-effects of drugs passed through the main roads and bazaars of the town. Later, an exhibition, various competitions and a seminar was organised at the school. Additional Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Paul was the chief guest and district education officer Amrik Singh presided over. The students - Ramandeep Kaur, Kulvir Kaur, Ajay Kumar, Bhimakshi, Rimpi, Shanu Rana, Anandita, Davinder Singh, Kajal, Sukhwinder Kaur, Manpreet, Jaskirat Kaur, Kuljit Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Jaspreet Kaur, excelled in various competitions. The Additional Deputy Commissioner gave away prizes to the winners. Shivalik Public School organised a special lecture by Dr JS Sandhu, psychiatric and a specialist in de-addiction, to educate students on the ill-effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking. In his address, Dr Sandhu, with the help of audio-video presentation, highlighted how youngsters get caught in the web of drug abuse and then were not able to get out of it. He said drug abusers not only suffer from poor health and fall prey to diseases like HIV, hepatitis, liver failure, depression, lung and oral cancers, bleedings, injuries, accidents and early deaths, but also face social isolation. |
