Villagers block traffic over girls’ death
Hoshiarpur, November 19 Two wounded girl students, Sunita, daughter of Kulwinder, and Anuradha Rani, daughter of Hari Mitter, both of Gobindpur Khun-Khun, succumbed to their injuries at the Civil Hospital. Following their death the Hariana police has registered a case under Sections 279, 304A, 337 and 338 of the IPC against Ravi Sher Singh. Their friend Priya Kalis, daughter of Mehar Chand, resident of the same village, was admitted to a local private hospital. A vehicle carrying bodies of Sunita and Anuradha was also parked at the protest site of Bhikhowal. Later in the evening the bodies of both the girls were shifted to a mortuary at Singriwala. The blockade and dharna, which started around 11 am, continued till the filing of the story. At about 5 pm some of the activists of the Begampura Tiger Force brandishing swords got shops from Clock Tower to the Jalandhar road and in some other bazaars closed. Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP, and Dipinder Singh, DC, were at Garhshankar due to the visit of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Commenting on the issue Chief Parliamentary Secretary Mohinder Kaur Josh said her nephew Ravi Sher Singh along with his mother was going to his village in the Gypsy, which accidentally hit three girl students. She said she went to the houses of deceased Sunita and Anuradha to console their parents and also to the house of Priya Kalsi to sympathise with her family. She alleged that some of her Congress opponents were trying to flare up the issue for political gains. |

Nawanshahr, November 19 Giving details, district education officer Amrik Singh said all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the matches had been made. Different committees headed by school heads for ensuring proper boarding and lodging of the teams, record keeping, technical committee, media coverage, etc., had been constituted, he said. The boys’ teams would stay at Government Senior Secondary School, JSFH Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Doaba Sikh National High School, Doaba Arya Senior Secondary School and the girls’ teams would stay at WLA Arya Senior Secondary School, SD Senior Secondary School and Baba Wajir Singh Girls High School in the town. |

Attack on medical officers
Tarn Taran, November 19 In a memorandum submitted to the Civil Surgeon here today, the association has warned that in case no action was taken against the accused, the doctors would adopt the agitation path from tomorrow. Dr Gurjit Singh Dhaliwal, district president of the association, said Dr Gurjinder Singh and Dr Sarwan Singh, medical officers of CHC, Chabal, were allegedly attacked while they were on duty at the centre today. Dr Dhaliwal said one member of the paramedical staff with the help of his relatives attacked the doctors. The association warned that they would go on strike from 9 AM to 11 AM on November 20 in protest against the attack on the doctors. The association said in case no action was taken against the accused, the doctors would paralyse the medical services for full day on November 21 and then the action would be brought to the state level. A memorandum was also presented to Civil Surgeon regarding the proposed agitation by the association. — OC |

Gang of thieves busted, 2 held
Phagwara, November 19 The police has also recovered three stolen laptops from their possession. The police said the arrested accused were employed in a juice shop at Lovely Professional University (Chiherru), Phagwara. The accused also confessed before the police that they used to serve juices and other cold drinks in the hostel of LPU and succeeded to took away laptops in the absence of some students. — OC |

Number of students appearing for NTSE doubles
Nawanshahr, November 19 A number of students appearing in the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) has considerably increased this year. District Science Supervisor Surinder Agnihotri said two centres -— Govt Senior Secondary School and Dr Asa Nand Arya Senior Secondary School — were set up in the district to conduct NTSE and NMMS exams. While for NTSE, as many as 544 applications were received out of which 439 candidates appeared. For NMMS, as many as 707 applications were received and 644 candidates appeared for the test. “The number of students appearing for these tests is more than double than the previous year,” said Dinesh Kumar, Principal, Government Senior Secondary School, while appreciating the positive change in the government schools. Students were not only mobilised by teachers, but were also being provided coaching facility via Edusat in schools for preparing for these tests. Anand Gupta, subject expert, State Institute of Science Education, said about 19,000 candidates from Punjab appeared in NTSE. About 9,000 students had appeared for the test in 2011. — OC
