Desperate candidates resort to mudslinging

Banga (Nawanshahr), January 28
Candidates of various political parties resorted to mudslinging against their rivals to woo voters. When Congress’ Banga candidate Tirlochan Singh Soondh addressed gatherings on Friday, his supporters left no stone unturned to tarnish the image of his rival through ‘slanderous’ speeches.

At a gathering at Sandhwan village on Behram-Mahilpur road, Congress leader Raghbir Singh termed SAD candidate Ch Mohan Lal his own cousin’s ‘murderer’ and a ‘drug dealer’.

Raghbir Singh launched an attack on SAD candidate alleging: “Ch Mohan Lal’s father Swarna Ram had accepted Rs 12.5 lakh as bribe for getting a work done. The BJP was still wise to remove him from the Cabinet and not allocating ticket to him from Phagwara, but SAD committed the biggest blunder by handing over ticket to Ch Mohan Lal overlooking such serious allegations against him”.

Ch Mohan Lal, on the other hand has started the dirty game against Congress candidate Soondh, an ex-IFS officer, by raking up old cases of “issuing passports to wanted persons during his tenure as Passport Officer and having remained lodged in jail for the same”. Soondh, on the other hand, has even managed to take uncles and cousins of his rival into his fold as his last ditch efforts.

Ch Mohan Lal is also harping on development of the area and also getting sub-division status for it. The candidate of this reserved seat has also tried to woo voters by evoking their religious sentiments by mentioning his plan of getting a memorial constructed in the name of Guru Ravidass and Bhagwan Valmiki in his list of promises.

6 booked for dual votes

The Nakodar police on Saturday booked six persons for having dual votes in the constituency. Those having dual votes have been identified as Charan Kaur, Gyan Singh, Joginder Singh Bhamra, Gurbaksh Kaur, Amarjit Kaur and Mandeep Bhamra, all residents of railway road. Police officials said the accused have been booked following a complaint by the Nakodar Sub-Divisional Magistrate. The accused had votes at the Railway road area and Bhagat Singh Nagar locality of the city. The police said that SDM had also sent evidence which verified the offence of the accused. A case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC and 31 of Representation of People’s Act has been registered against the accused, who are still at large. The police said that raids were being conducted to nab them. A few days ago, the Nakodar police had booked seven persons for having dual votes.

Dummy EVM

Ch Mohan Lal used a dummy electronic voting machine (EVM) with his name and party symbol to demonstrate its use to voters wherever he went. The machine has ‘ready’ light and other buttons exactly as in the original machine.

NRIs to candidates’ aid

NRIs in this belt of Nawanshahr are back home to support their candidates. Even as most of them do not have votes, they have been called by candidates to influence their family members. Soondh’s gathering was held in the house of NRI Joginder Singh, who has returned from the UK. Other NRIs, including Sohan Singh, also from the UK, Harbant Singh and Buta Singh from Canada, and Parwinder Singh from Dubai also attended the event.

Jalandhar, January 28
With youngsters set to play a major role in deciding the fate of candidates of the upcoming Assembly elections, candidates and their parties have gone tech savvy in a bid to catch the youths on social networking sites.

In the last phase of election campaign, the state not only witnessed high-profile campaigning, but also social networking war between various candidates on Facebook.

Such is the craze of politicians to post interesting poll details that even candidates who never had a Facebook page earlier have managed to do so through their party workers.

‘Jaggi Jeeta’ campaign of the Congress to ‘Jhootha Thaggi’ details, net savvy PPP chief Manpreet Badal, Jalandhar (North )candidate KD Bhandari to Manoranjan Kalia, almost everybody has turned ‘Facebook friends’ of voters these days.

As one goes through Facebook pages, what attracts the eye on first account is hilarious attacks of Congress and SAD-BJP on each other. Jeeta Jaggi states: “Akali Bhajpa wale jhooth bol ke thak gaye ne, hun jhooth bolan layi unhane ‘Jhootha te Thaggi’ rakh laye ne.”

Congress workers have also uploaded a picture on the ‘Jija- Sala duo’ Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and Bikamjit Singh Majithia, which states: ‘Sari khudai ek taraf, joru ka bhai ek taraf’

On the other hand, the ‘Jhootha Thaggi’ campaign of SAD-BJP government has been hitting the congress hard through facts and rhythmic slogans but it has no separate page on Facebook. Rakesh Sharma, the state convener of BJP IT Cell said, “Just today we uploaded the link of ‘Jhootha Thaggi’ campaign on our official website BJP Punjab. The page will become active by tommorow and we added all the advertisements on it.”

Similarly, Punjab People’s Party (PPP) chief, Manpreet Badal who is one of the net-savvy politicians has shared amazing slogans. One such slogan hitting out the SAD was- “Meri Patang jaye 'Badal-on' ke paar’.

Manpreet has been actively interacting with his supporters and urging them to bring a change in the state. His one such common slogan on Facebook is- ‘Be the change. Vote for Change’.

Another name in the list of active facebook users is BJP candidate from Jalandhar North, K.D. Bhandari who can be seen wishing a warm ‘Good Morning’ to his supporters to motivating his party bandwagon. Bhandari has also uploaded a sizeable number of news clippings of various newspapers so as to inform the voters about his share in the development of the constituency.

Just recently, Bhandari also uploaded his status- ‘Vande Mataram Happy Independence Day to all my friends’. But amidst this, he too does not leave the chance of lashing out at Congress led UPA government. He has shared a picture of ‘How petrol prices have been sky rocketed in India, courtesy UPA government’.

Ayesha Pathania a local student who has been an active follower of the political pages said, “Although many politicians have facebook pages but not everybody is involved in using it as a medium to reach out to the masses. Barring a few politicians, usually these pages are being run by the party workers, which should nothing short of befooling the voters again.”

Among those candidates, who are not active on Facebook but using the medium are - Congress candidate from Jalandhar North, Avtar Henry, SAD candidate from Jalandhar Cantonment, Pargat Singh and BJP candidate from Jalandhar Central, Manoranjan Kalia. All these candidates have just uploaded their pictures with no friends at all.

Pargat’s party workers said, “We have made a page ‘Support Pargat’ for garnering support of the electorate. It was formed the day after his name was announced from the Jalandhar Cantt seat.”
