Poll campaign brochure war hots up
Jalandhar, January 25 While the ruling party candidates have used pictures of development works carried out in their constituencies in their brochures, candidates of opposition parties have listed the failures of the SAD-BJP government. The four-page brochure of BJP’s Jalandhar (North) candidate KD Bhandari carries pictures of Maqsudan, Domoria and DAV railway overbridges. It also has poetical messages in Hindi/Urdu seeking voters’ support which reads: “Tum jo rehbar ho to aasan rasta ho jayega, tum tarashoge to pathar bhi khuda ho jayega.” Another handout comes with a message: ‘Hamara Sankalp 2012-2017’ again beginning with a verse: “Meri zindagi ek nirantar safar hai, jo manzil pe pahuncha to manzil badha di.” He has listed his priorities, including construction of Chandan Nagar railway underbridge, setting up of Adarsh Model School and removing of high tension 11 KVA wires. His rival from the Congress Avtar Henry is also distributing a four-page brochure which promises construction of Chandan Nagar railway underbridge and other issues listed the party manifesto. The inside two pages of the brochure have been dedicated to the ‘misrule’ of the SAD-BJP government. In his colourful handout, BJP’s Jalandhar (Central) candidate Manoranjan Kalia has taken the credit for renovating the Civil Hospital and getting a project of the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) approved during his tenure. He has also mentioned doling out Rs 324.11 crore for the Khalsa College ROB, BMC flyover, schemes of JIT, renovation of Guru Gobind Singh Stadium and Northern India Institute of Fashion and Technology during his current tenure. In contrast, his rival and Congress councillor Rajinder Beri has come up with a simple handout, claiming himself to be a ‘people’s man. The publicity material of Pargat Singh, however, mentions his sports-related achievements, listing details of his awards and his career as Director Sports, Punjab, and SP with the Punjab Police. Mudslinging begins
Some candidates have resorted to mudslinging through the poll publicity material. Congress candidate from Jalandhar (Central) Rajinder Beri has tried to target his rival by asking questions in his handout: “Do you want a leader who has been removed from the cabinet? Do you want a leader who has always been in Chandigarh after his victory and abstained from the problems of the common man even on phone? Do you want a leader who can be contacted only through a middleman?”

Candidates should deliver what they promise: Young voters
Jalandhar, January 25 Young voters raised public issues ranging from poor condition of roads to drug abuse and law and order problem in their respective constituencies, thereby claiming that they would cast their ballot and elect a candidate of their choice. Jalandhar Tribune spoke to a cross section of first-time voters who were given their voter cards at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya this morning. Raj Kumar, a student of class XII of Government School, Bhargo Camp, said he would vote for a candidate who would promise to reconstruct the roads in his locality of Bhargo Camp falling under the Jalandhar (West) constituency. "I also want that there should be a check on the rampant drug abuse in our constituency," he added. Shobha Kumari, another first-time voter working in a boutique, was all excited and said she would contribute in the democratic process. A class VII passout, she demanded subsidised skill development education for the financially weaker section students. "I could not pursue my education due to certain unavoidable circumstances. But, I would cast my vote to elect a government, which would ensure quality education for scores of students like me", she added. Among the female voters, the issue of city turning out to be unsafe for women remained a debatable topic. Many girls claimed that owing to rampant drug abuse, lawlessness and order in the district, such cases were on the rise. "We don't feel safe even in a crowded market leave alone the matter of commuting alone even at day time. For me what matters the most is a politician with a clean image who can fulfill these requirements", said Ekta (20) also a first time voter. Lack of good job avenues in the state also invited the support of the young voters. Rohini Vashisht (21) stated that the educated youth does not get their due in the state. "It is owing to lack of good industry, IT companies and MNCs in the state scores of educated youth either migrate abroad or have to look for job opportunities in big metros. It is high time that the government's should seriously consider the development of the state and youth in particular", she added. To a query about the usual trend of following the family legacy of casting vote to a particular party or candidate, the first time voters stated that they would cast their ballot with 'choice' and not by 'chance'.
