Ambala among filthiest cities
Ambala, October 13 They say frequent water logging causes heavy damage to the roads. Since the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation, it is the duty of the latter to strengthen infrastructure in various localities. The residents allege that a number of representations to the MC in this regard have failed to evoke a positive response. The locals have expressed resentment over the fact that no arrangements have been made to ensure cleanliness in the town. Sudhir Kumar, Gurdev Kansal, Ashok Gupta and Vijay Jain, all senior members of RWAs of Laxmi Nagar, Palam Vihar and Hari Nagar, say, “It is not possible to venture out of house as stench emanating from heaps of garbage has become unbearable. No safai karmachari comes to lift the garbage on a regular basis”. According to a recent survey of the Ministry of Urban Development, conducted in 423 cities in the country, Ambala Cantt has been identified as one of filthiest towns in the country ranking 340th position in terms of cleanliness whereas Ambala City ranked at 277th position. The prominent reason of neglect in maintaining cleanliness has been observed as the shortage of safai karamcharis as no appointment has been made in the past several years. Sameer Pal Srow, deputy commissioner, says a few months ago, the Ambala Municipal Corporation has signed a contract with Sulabh International for two months for Rs 12.25 lakh per month to clean the city. On an average, Ambala City and Ambala Cantt used to generate about 100 tonnes of garbage before floods in the area, but now, the quantity has gone up to 145 tonnes per day, sources say. Srow says to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases, nodal officers have been appointed to coordinate with the district health officers and take effective measures to check the outbreak of diseases. The sources say people use to throw garbage in the open in thickly populated residential areas due to which drains remain blocked. According to information, around 725 safai karamcharis are needed to cover 47 sq km area in Ambala Cantt. The area was expanded after the addition of 32 villages in Ambala Cantt in July 2009.

Emu rearing catches the fancy of Rewari villagers
Rewari, October 13 Emus, which are large, flightless, but fast running Australian birds, are members of the ratite family of birds like ostrich, rhea, cassowary and kiwi. An emu stands about six feet tall and weighs around 130 pounds. Emus, which originated in Australia, are now raised on farms throughout the US for their lean red meat and other food byproducts. Every part of the emu is worthwhile. Its meat and eggs are largely consumed as food whereas its feathers are utilised in fashion or crafts and its hide and leg skins are tanned to make leather. Besides, its fat is rendered and refined to make emu oil that is used in health and beauty products while its claws and toenails are used in jewellery and crafts. Evidently, such profitability of the bird has stimulated many farmers to set up emu farms here as well. Among the existing emu ranches, the one at Ghasera village, near here, is probably the largest. Known as Aashu Emu Farm, it was established by Shiv Kumar Yadav in January this year. The farm now has as many as 50 pairs of the bird. Yadav says emus were purchased by him from a large farmhouse in Mumbai. He has already spent over Rs 20 lakh on the setting up of the farm and its maintenance. He says the birds will start laying eggs by October end and each egg is expected to fetch him Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, depending on its weight. Yadav says the bird is playful and friendly. As regards its fodder, he says a 50-kg bag of fodder cost him Rs 800. A minimum of 600 g of fodder is usually consumed by each bird on a daily basis. They are also huge eaters of insects and caterpillars, he adds.
