Book on Haryanavi humour released
Sirsa, September 26 “Chaupal Pe Roadways” is the sixth book on Haryanavi humour written by Shamim Sharma, who earlier penned “Chaupal Ke Makhol-1”, Chaupal Ke Makhaul -II, “Chaupal Ke Chale”, “Chaupal Pe Tau” and “Chaupal Pe Tabar Taul”. “This book is a collection of witty comments one gets to hear while travelling in Haryana Roadways buses,” said Shamim Sharma, who is executive director of the Jan Nayak Chaudhary Devi Lal Vidyapeeth here, about her new book. Shamin said: “Haryanavis are humorous by nature. They have a witty comment ready for almost every situation. Sometimes the one-liners of illiterate rustic Haryanavis can put a highly educated person to shame. Through this book, I have tried to compile all those anecdotes, conversations between co-passengers, between conductors and passengers and between drivers and conductors in my latest book”. Shamim said: “She is intolerant about cheap and concocted anecdotes passed off as Haryanavi humour these days”. “A real Haryanavi joke carries subtle humour and no double entendre. Humour in Haryana is not limited to the educated, perhaps illiterate farmers and rural women have a greater sense of humour than their urban counterparts,” she added. Dr Shamim Sharma’s tryst with Haryanavi humour began in the mid-90s when she brought out a fortnightly called “Thari Maari Chaupal” as part of the Hisar Saaksharta Samiti’s efforts to promote literacy among women.

Hisar Byelection
Chandigarh, September 26 The speakers, who met to discuss the Hisar byelection, were emphatic that the Congress would win the election hands down. However, they underlined an important message -- the need to sink individual differences with the candidate and work for the party. They were almost unanimous that no matter who the candidate, the rank and file of the party should join hands and ensure a win for the Congress. They went on to add that settling personal scores with the candidate could wait until after the election is over, indicating that differences should be glossed over for the time being. While the state unit chief of the party, Phool Chand Mullana, asked Jai Prakash to be “polite” while asking for vote and support, Jai Prakash, too, sensing that there could be some unresolved differences with colleagues, asked for forgiveness for past mistakes while seeking support by individually naming leaders. Senior leader Sampat Singh stressed the need for “marketing” the Congress. He, too, suggested to Jai Prakash, “There may be dissatisfied and angry people when we go out on field. Fold your hands and touch their feet. There is no harm.” Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ram Kishan Fauji emphasised that it did not behove of a party worker to find fault in the decision of the party high command. “I can have personal differences with him but now is not the time to sort these out. This election is not about an individual or his capability but about winning for the party and our leadership,” he said. A ticket aspirant himself, Chattar Pal, also a local Congressman and former MLA, only joined the leaders on the dais after the CM sent a message for him. He said the leaders should ensure a win for the Congress ideology. The state youth Congress president, Chiranjeev Rao, said experience had shown that the Congress was the biggest enemy of the Congress and urged workers to forget their differences and work together.
